The story that started it all, Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008) introduced the world to the four kingdoms that could control the elements and Katara and Sokka, who find the last airbender, Aang, who happens to be the Avatar. The series explores his journey to master the four elements while making friends and stopping enemies along the way.
With only three seasons, the animated series never overstayed its welcome, and seeing Aang grow to face the threat he has avoided for a century was incredible. The animation was impressive, and the show never lost its humor even when it got serious. It's a fantastic show with an incredible attention to the cultures that inspired it and a story that's impossible not to get caught up in, and it pairs perfectly with Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender.
The Legend of Korra (2012-2014) continued the story of Avatar: The Last Airbender by introducing the next in the Avatar line: Korra. The characters from the previous series were now much older but still played a role in Korra's journey to learn the elements and stop her own great evils.
Unfortunately, the series has been widely divisive, as many felt it didn't measure up to what came before. With The Last Airbender (2010), it seemed like a live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series would be next to impossible. But Netflix has delivered the best possible outcome with Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024). While the show misses many story beats that made the animated series great, it still gives us a solid overview of the best parts of the original show.
