Stephen King is one of the most prolific and influential horror writers of our time, and his stories have been adapted into countless movies and television series. Even now, the media has been in a Stephen King renaissance as classic stories like Salem’s Lot (2024) get new life, while The Life of Chuck (2025) delivers a hopeful message in a dark time.

That said, the King Renaissance isn’t over. Many more of his stories are getting adaptations and remakes in the coming years. Here are some upcoming Stephen King projects that will happen soon or are definitely happening in the future.

As the first Stephen King novel and the first King movie adaptation, it’s been a while since audiences have gotten a faithful adaptation of Carrie. But thanks to Mike Flanagan, the story will be revived with a new perspective.

Rather than a film, Carrie will be an eight-part miniseries following a young outcast with unique supernatural abilities who is bullied at home by her mother and by the kids at school. Audiences will see Carrie’s wrath unleashed on Prime Video in October 2026. Until then, Brian De Palma’s Carrie (1976) remains the go-to for fans of revenge horror, and it’s free on Tubi.

It: Welcome to Derry was a massive success and turned the clocks back 27 years before Andy Muschietti’s films. But considering Pennywise dies at the end of It: Chapter Two (2019), Season 2 of Welcome to Derry will turn the clocks back even further.

There’s no confirmed release date for It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 as of now, nor are there any great plot details. However, King’s novel offers just enough information to set up a timeline of events. Until then, fans can still check out Season 1 on HBO Max. As fans wait for the next season, It: Chapter One (2017) is a great start to understand the world of Welcome to Derry better.

The Institute is a series about children with telekinetic and telepathic powers who are kidnapped and tortured in an institute to understand their powers better. It leans more into the supernatural rather than the horror, but the narrative is incredibly compelling and a perfect jumping-on point for Stephen King newcomers.

There’s not much known about The Institute Season 2 aside from the fact that a second season got greenlit before the first had finished airing. Though there’s no set release date, The Institute Season 1 can be watched on MGM+. Before the series releases, Firestarter (2022) is another great story that explores how the government studies superpowered children.

The Talisman follows a man trying to find a cure for his supernatural ailment in the town of Castle Rock, Maine. Though nothing has been officially picked up, a script was drafted by The Institute Executive Producer, Jack Bender.

For now, there’s little to go on other than the idea that the series seems to be in motion in some capacity. But considering Bender’s history with television and producing shows like From (2022), there’s a strong possibility The Talisman could see the light of day. In the meantime, Castle Rock (2018) is a great series to watch to understand the town The Talisman is set in.

Following a failed movie adaptation of King’s magnum opus, The Dark Tower has felt like something of a cursed or difficult-to-adapt property. That said, Mike Flanagan has become the man for the task of bringing the dark Western/sci-fi story to life.

With Flanagan wrapping up Carrie, it may still be a wait before he can get this series off the ground, but if anyone can tell the story of a gunslinger fighting a dangerous Man in Black, it’s Flanagan. Especially after adapting other King stories like Gerald’s Game (2017) and Doctor Sleep (2019). While the film is one way to enjoy the story, 1979’s Salem’s Lot is a great movie to explain how King connects some of his stories to The Dark Tower.

A more young adult-friendly story, Fairy Tale, follows a young boy who finds himself in another dimension where he’s caught in a massive war between good and evil and has to survive the experience. Initially, Jason Bourne’s Paul Greengrass was going to adapt the novel into a film, but things have changed.

Now, Fairy Tale is being reworked into a TV series by A24. With J.H. Wyman (Fringe) as showrunner, the series is sure to be strange and fun. As of now, there’s no release date, but it’s good to know that things are still in the works. It’s hard to find a Stephen King story that fits the tone of Fairy Tale but the series, Haven (2010), is great for fans looking for a supernatural story that goes beyond horror.

Frank Darabont’s The Mist (2007) is a powerful sci-fi movie that still has one of the most shocking endings in cinema, but fans still wanted more. Now, Mike Flanagan once again takes the reins of another Stephen King title with the hope that this story will be even more chilling.

With monstrous creatures eating innocents within a mist and a father and son trapped in a supermarket, The Mist is perfect for Flanagan’s reflective approach to storytelling. But for now, there’s no word on a release date for the project. While it may be some time before Flanagan’s iteration comes out, you can still watch the 2007 film on Tubi. It remains a great choice for fans of dramatic creature features.

An off-the-beaten-path King story, Billy Summers follows a hitman who, after one more job, plans to retire before things get more complicated than he planned. At first, this was a planned series, but it has since been announced as a film with Leonardo DiCaprio attached in some capacity.

As of now, there have been no further announcements and only speculation over who could direct. But with a big name like DiCaprio attached, there’s more hope than ever that Billy Summers could finally see the light of day. It’s hard to find a King movie that’s like Billy Summers, but for fans of retired killers, a great companion is David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence (2005).

Cujo has become one of King’s most popular and tragic stories as it follows a lovable St. Bernard turned killer after contracting rabies. It’s a genuine story of survival that has only had one film adaptation: Cujo (1983).

That said, in 2025, Netflix announced that it plans to adapt the iconic story. However, there have been no further details on the production and no timeline for release. Until the remake sees the light of day, however, the 1983 film is a great survival story.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon follows a young girl who gets lost in the woods and, in her fight for survival, hallucinates that she can see her hero, baseball player Tom Gordon. Another unique King story, it’s one that’s been begging for an adaptation.

Now, with The Long Walk (2025) writer J.T. Mollner attached, he can help bring the film to life through Lionsgate. As of now, there are no further announcements or release dates. While waiting for the story to release, Stand by Me (1986) remains a great way to explore a King story not about the supernatural but the human condition.
