10 Underrated Love Stories You Probably Never Saw (But Can Watch Right Now)

People continue to discover the absolute masterpiece that is My Lady Jane, and then find themselves upset by the fact that it was canceled after Season 1, but I'm here to plead that it's still worth every minute. And if you loved Emily Bader in People We Meet on Vacation (2026), you'll adore her performance as the titular Lady Jane Grey.

As a delightful marriage of romance and fantasy, the series effectively delivers the most compelling reimagining of history in a manner that'll keep you on the edge of your seat. With a wildly upbeat soundtrack, stunning performances from the whole cast, and a romance that's for the ages, everything about My Lady Jane is perfect, and I don't use that word lightly. Plus, though it was canceled, it's not the worst kind of cliffhanger to leave viewers with.

From the poster, the first shot to the very last, and every moment in between, Sylvie's Love is the kind of modern-day film that instantly feels like a classic. With a brilliant and deeply memorable performance from Tessa Thompson, the movie shines as a gorgeous love story that not only sticks the landing, but it'll haunt you long after the credits roll.

It's the type of movie that, dare I say, should've landed an Oscar nomination at least. Lush, full of depth, and enormously soulful, there really aren't enough beautiful adjectives to describe the entirety of the film, and how the story is brimming with the kind of immense heart that's necessary to ensure a romance will be memorable. It’s absolutely perfect for anyone who wants a classic romance with top-tier performances. 

Written by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, The Big Sick, also starring Nanjiani, is inspired by the couple's real-life experiences and results in a gorgeously produced romance that's delightful on all fronts. It's also one of the loveliest movies to revisit because everything about it feels like comfort when so much of fiction can be dark and dreary nowadays.

Also, don't let the title deter you if you're a hypochondriac. There's no main character death here, but instead it's a gorgeous account of endurance to showcase how far partners are willing to go for each other. It's the kind of love story that's an actual reminder of what love should look like, making The Big Sick a must-watch for all romance fans. 

With Love is one of the best and most surprising romantic comedies, but unfortunately, like My Lady Jane, it's so heartbreaking that it was canceled early (thankfully, at least, after Season 2.) Still, the series is undoubtedly worth watching for all that it accomplishes in giving us a brilliant family story with gorgeous romances alongside it.

Perfect for viewers who are missing One Day at a Time (2017), the way With Love centers the Diaz family is not only excellent but cozy and thoroughly comforting. The romantic comedy was not only an excellent series with thoughtful diversity at the helm, but it's the kind you can keep turning back to for indescribable joy throughout. With LGBTQ+ romances brilliantly handled and a solid friends-to-lovers as well, it gets so much right so quickly.

Perfect for anyone who loved the original 1992 movie, Prime Video's A League of Their Own was an absolute triumph in its debut season and one of the shows for which a cancellation was utterly uncalled for, devastating so many fans in its wake. Everything that the series accomplishes is so admirable, and the cast featured absolute legends, making it a must-watch.

Viewers are always and often begging for amazing shows like A League of Their Own, but whether it's because of marketing or they simply don't have the time before they're cancelled, they go unnoticed. Still, despite the heartbreaking ending, it's one of the best love stories with LGBTQ+ leads that deserves a ton of hype and viewership to this day. 

Upgraded is one of the most solid contemporary romances from the last five years, and it's a shame more people didn't watch it when it first premiered. Starring Camila Mendes and Archie Renaux, it's got all the delicious formulaic inclusions that make a rom-com delightful, including a disastrous meet-cute and a lie that's pushed too far.

Miscommunication is a plot device that people often complain about, but when it's executed properly, it can result in the type of narrative that's an absolute blast throughout. With a sharp screenplay, scenic London setting, and solid character building in the short time frame, everything about Upgraded feels like the type of rom-coms we got in the '90s and early 2000s. It’s perfect for anyone who loves the opposite-attracts trope. 

While Modern Love is an anthology series with the cast changing in every episode, it can be a great series to watch after This Is Christmas, as somewhat of a unique approach to how stories bleed together. It's also in this little gem of a show where the legendary Anne Hathaway (among other big name stars) delivers some of their best and most haunting performances.

The entire series is a compelling showcase of brief love stories and how they leave a mark on people, delivering one significant episode after another. With each story being different, the series provides something totally unique and engaging in its approach to spotlight a diverse cast, diverse stories, and genuinely thought-provoking narratives throughout. 

Most viewers are aware of the popular Spanish trilogy, Culpa Mia (2023), but the English version, My Fault: London is a total smoke show from start to finish. Brimming with an amazing soundtrack like My Lady Jane, the sultry romance centers on a forbidden step-sibling romance and surprisingly nails the trope with all the marks necessary to make it work.

It's controversial to be sure, and not every viewer will gravitate toward it, but it's one of the few that gets everything right down to the T, making the romance something you'll surprisingly want to rewatch over and over again. As the first part of the trilogy, it's an excellent entrance into a new location, and the chemistry between stars Matthew Broome and Asha Banks is off the charts.

This Is Christmas is not only an underrated romance, but it's one of the most underrated holiday movies that's guaranteed to win over viewers who adore ensemble stories like in Love Actually (2003). With a gorgeously serendipitous set up that highlights a group of strangers spending the holidays together, the movie becomes a stunning showcase of humanity and the importance of community.

It's warm, achingly cozy, and the kind of movie that feels like the biggest hug around the holidays. At the same time, the love story that develops between Alfred Enoch's Adam and Kaya Scodelario's Emma is the type of rare treat that romance fans will think about for a long, long time. It's guaranteed to become a yearly watch and perfect for anyone who loves found family vibes. 

The Pursuit of Love, starring Lily James and Emily Beecham, is a breath of fresh air as a limited series and perfect for anyone who loves period dramas with soul. It's a delightful escape and a thought-provoking story all at once, while the performances do an effective job of allowing the series and characters to be memorable.

It's stylistic, and the sharp screenplay, paired with gorgeous directing, adds nuance to the narrative in a manner that allows the story to feel fresh. Emily Mortimer isn't just a powerhouse of an actress, but as a writer and director, it's through The Pursuit of Love and her previous work, Doll & Em (2014), where she also proves that her talents are limitless behind the camera, too.
