Weyland-Yutani. The Tyrell Corporation. OmniCorp. These are some of the all-time greatest and most evil corporations in fiction, companies that are willing to commit unspeakable acts for the sake of the company, but the Umbrella Corporation from Resident Evil (2002) may just be the most villainous of them all. However, if you saw Zach Cregger’s take on the franchise, you may be thinking something else entirely different.

Resident Evil (2026) doesn’t paint the Umbrella Corporation as this bastion of evil willing to do whatever it takes to plug any leaks from its numerous failed science experiments. Instead, the film portrays them as completely and utterly inept, hopelessly out of their depth in containing the biohazard they unleashed upon Raccoon City. To many fans, this is a cardinal sin that cannot be forgiven. But within the context of the film, it’s actually a brilliant subversion that makes Resident Evil even better.

What Is The Umbrella Corporation’s Goal In ‘Resident Evil’?

Much like in the video games, the Umbrella Corporation is the progenitor of the viral outbreak that is ravaging Raccoon City and the nearby countryside, but the key difference between the two mediums is intent.

In the Resident Evil video games, the Umbrella Corporation had two goals that seemed to be in conflict with each other. On one hand, the manufacturing of viruses like the T-Virus, G-Virus, and nightmarish creatures like Lickers were meant to be bio-weapons sold to the highest bidder. At the same time, though, many of the heads of Umbrella, like its founder, Oswell Spencer, see the work at the company as a way to evolve humanity into something better. How shambling zombies serve as the next stage of human evolution is anyone’s guess, but it’s certainly a choice that led to plenty of games' worth of chaos and horror.

As for the Umbrella Corporation in Cregger’s Resident Evil, we don’t exactly know how or why Umbrella was working on its experiment that unleashed a plague upon the world. All we know is that it was an “accident” and that Umbrella was somewhat involved in fixing things, which is more than can be said about their video game equivalent, as they were more interested in saving face and destroying evidence than trying to save mankind. They don’t deny that they’re at fault and give weak excuses, but the film doesn’t paint them as the bad guys, and that’s why fans are so annoyed with Cregger’s depiction of them.

Why Does ‘Resident Evil’ Turn Umbrella Into A Joke?

Still from Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil

Many words can describe the Umbrella Corporation. Uncaring. Sociopathic. Brutal. But none of those words really fit Cregger’s version. They’re just a complete joke.

When we first meet Umbrella employees, it’s in the form of a scientist named Paul and a stern woman named Maxine. While Maxine is the kind of no-nonsense badass that would best describe series mainstays like Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, Paul is the exact opposite. He’s a yammering, cocky coward who is quick to leave Maxine behind and run for his life instead of saving her. Later, when we meet other Umbrella scientists, they mostly serve as body-count fodder for the amalgam that makes its way into their lab and seem stunned that a mutant could make it in, despite their hospital positively crawling with them.

No matter how you slice it, every Umbrella Corporation employee in Resident Evil is meant to be laughed at for their seemingly endless levels of stupidity. This is the same company that decided to hire a low-cost delivery driver to bring them the antidote, which Paul tries to justify in the weakest way possible. When the scientists are faced with a genuine mutant, instead of coldly having a contingency plan in place, they run around like chickens with their heads cut off to serve as tasty morsels for the big baddie they unwittingly made. It’s a huge fall from grace for an organization that created Tyrants and the living Terminator that is Nemesis, to the point it almost feels like a parody of one of the most feared companies in media. And that’s exactly the point.

Why Making Umbrella A Punchline Works For ‘Resident Evil’

For all of the menacing aura that the Umbrella Corporation exudes in the games, the one thing that fans forget is that they’ve always been ridiculous. Cregger didn’t decide to make them into a punchline. He merely brought to the forefront what was already there.

Disregard the fact that the Resident Evil games approached the Umbrella Corporation in the same way that B-movies depicted cartoonishly evil scientists; even at their most serious, too many of their ideas sound moronic. It’s become a meme at points in the fandom that in every game there’s at least one note from an Umbrella scientist detailing some obviously dumb experiment that seems to only exist to senselessly murder everything around it that just so happens to escape captivity. It’s one thing to make a bioweapon and have it get loose, but it happening in almost every game Umbrella is in is just comical.

Cregger understands that and doesn’t try to pretend that Umbrella is this monolithic paragon of evil. Like most real-world companies, it’s filled to the brim with people who have no idea what to do when everything hits the fan, and it’s fun watching them reap what they sow. Resident Evil dispels the myth of Umbrella, and watching every employee meet a grizzly end feels vindicating. It goes to show that nothing is sacred in Cregger’s vision of the franchise, and anything, and anyone, is fair game. That dark reckless abandon fills the film with a sense of fun, and if it comes at the cost of a few Umbrella scientists and employees who seem shocked that their actions have consequences, then all the better.
