The 2026 Netflix crime thriller, The Whisper Man, is a complete work of fiction. But the initial concept came from something that actually happened to author Alex North in real life. While the movie is based on North's 2019 novel about a serial killer who kidnaps and murders children, the story wasn't inspired by a real criminal case or investigation.

Instead, the idea for The Whisper Man came to North after his four-year-old son said something creepy to his dad shortly after the family moved into a new house. The author was in the kitchen when he heard his son playing in the front room. So he went to see what he was doing and recounted the moment in an interview with Digital Trends.

"I kind of poked my head around the kitchen door to say, 'What are you doing?' And he said, 'I'm just playing with the boy in the floor, which gave me a little bit of a chill," North recalled. The author went on to reveal that the writer in him thought it was a really good jumping off point for a story because of the creep factor.

How Did The Boy In The Floor Inspire ‘The Whisper Man’?

North decided if the "boy in the floor" comment gave him a chill, it might have a similar effect on other people. "That was kind of the way into the story, I suppose," he continued. "The little boy [in] the story would have imaginary friends, and they might be quite scary in some ways, and there might be some kind of doubt about how real [they] really were."

That idea became a core mystery surrounding Jake Kennedy (Acston Luca Porto), who is grieving the death of his mother. His father, Tom (Adam Scott), struggles to understand what he's going through. And when Jake talks about things Tom is unaware of, he doesn't know if his son is imagining them or just processing his grief in the only way he can.

But the boy in the floor was only a small piece of the story North had in mind. He had already decided that he wanted to write about fathers and sons, specifically a widowed father trying to connect with his young son. What he didn't have was the right way to bring that relationship into a crime thriller. His son gave him that opening.

The two ideas ended up working together in the book and the movie, with Tom trying to make sense of Jake's behavior and later having to save him from a very real serial killer. Although that makes for an entertaining thriller, the deeper message is about a parent trying to understand a child who is dealing with something he can't fix for him.

Is The ‘Boy In The Floor’ In The Movie?

There is no boy living in the floor in The Whisper Man. But the movie does work the boy in the floor idea into the story when Jake's imaginary friend tells him that she's afraid of the boy in the floor. When he tells his dad about it, Tom dismisses it along with the other things his son has been saying. However, everything changes after Jake is kidnapped.

While searching the basement with his own father, Peter (Robert De Niro), Tom discovers the remains of a young boy hidden under the floor. The skeleton belongs to one of the Whisper Man's victims, confirming that there really was a child hidden inside the house at some point. That discovery changes the way Tom perceives Jake's strange behavior.

Still, the movie never fully explains how Jake knows about the boy. The same ambiguity carries over to the mysterious girl in the blue sweater, who Jake sees throughout the movie. At the very end, Tom finds a photograph of his wife, Rebecca, wearing the same sweater as a child, suggesting that the girl is actually Jake's mother.

The movie leaves it up to the audience to decide whether Jake was seeing his mother's spirit or creating an imaginary version of her while dealing with her death.
