The Pitt wrapping up Season 2 on HBO Max means the award-winning medical drama is also bidding farewell to a character who has been on the show since the beginning: Supriya Ganesh’s Dr. Samira Mohan. Despite only beginning the fourth year of her residency, she will not be at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center (PTMC) when The Pitt returns for Season 3. Samira’s arc in the sophomore season sees her debating her place in emergency medicine, as well as a movie back home to New Jersey. However, Samira also tries to stay at PTMC, though the fellowship applications are proving to be incredibly competitive.

So, it may very well be that the third season reveals that Dr. Mohan got a fellowship at a different hospital in Pittsburgh, or she moved closer to home, or that she took the day off. The latter feels a bit optimistic, but I don’t want to give up hope yet! Assuming either (or any other) explanation plays out in dialogue, this exit will land similarly to Dr. Heather Collins’ (Tracy Ifeachor) exit after the first season.

In Season 2, Dr. Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell) shares through expository dialogue that Dr. Collins moved home to Portland, Oregon, where she has become an attending and is expecting a child. Only time will tell what the future holds for Dr. Samira Mohan, but, given The Pitt’s dedication to realistic turnover at a teaching hospital, she may not be the only beloved character leaving the show before or after the third season.

Dr. Frank Langdon - Could Go Either Way

If anyone is going to be close to leaving PTMC by the time of Season 3, it’s Dr. Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball). The second season finds him repeating the fourth year of his residency after spending 10 months in rehab. With a confirmed four-month time jump in Season 3, Dr. Langdon should still be in the middle of his residency, a lot like Samira in Season 3. Therefore, if the show decides to do another time jump for Season 4, there’s a great chance that the third season could be the last for Dr. Langdon—unless he becomes an attending physician at PTMC.

Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi) voices a desire for two attendings on shift at all times, and the night shift has that covered, in theory and practice, with Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy) and Dr. John Shen (Ken Kirby). Dr. Michael ‘Robby’ Robinavitch (Noah Wyle) usually runs the day shift by himself. Assuming Dr. Al-Hashimi sticks around, she is the most experienced and logical fit for another day-shift attending. Then again, there may be days when another attending will need to be present at PTMC. It’s hard to know as of Season 2 if that could be Dr. Langdon.

The character is still trying to find his confidence in the emergency department after a significant time away and a lot of tension with his former mentor, Dr. Robby. The latter may be reason enough for Dr. Langdon to take on an attending position at another hospital. Then again, it’s the same reason The Pitt may want to keep both characters on the same shift. The potential of Dr. Langdon and Dr. Robby learning to work together—in equal positions at the hospital—may be an interesting new angle for the show to explore their dynamic. Given the timeline of the show and Dr. Langdon’s career, The Pitt will likely come to its own conclusions during or after Season 3.

Medical Student Victoria Javadi - Likely To Leave

In Season 2, Victoria Javadi (Shabana Azeez) is a fourth-year medical student with a ton of options. Dr. Eileen Shamsi (Deepti Gupta), her mother and the attending general surgeon at PTMC, wants Javadi to follow in her footsteps and go into surgery. Meanwhile, Dr. Raymond Javadi (Usman Ally), Javadi’s father and an endocrinologist at PTMC, wants her to be happy, no matter her specialty. He even points her in the direction of dermatology. Mateo, a nurse and Javadi’s crush from Season 1, suggests that Javadi will make the right choice for her specialty, and it could take her to the night shift, where he is working as of Season 2.

After making a mistake with one of her patients, Dr. Robby tries to boost Javadi’s confidence in emergency medicine, proving she can make it there. However, the second season also teases that Javadi’s best fit may be psychiatry. She does great work with Dr. Caleb Jefferson (Christopher Thornton), an attending psychiatrist at PTMC. Assuming she doesn’t do a third rotation in the emergency department, Javadi will have to choose which specialty she wants to pursue for her residency before or during Season 3. If it’s not emergency medicine, that could mean that Javadi remains at PTMC, but she will be on the show a lot less, if at all.

Medical Students James Ogilvie and Joy Kwon - Likely To Leave

Two of the new characters to The Pitt could be the best example of the show’s revolving door. Medical students James Ogilvie (Lucas Iverson) and Joy Kwon (Irene Choi) come to PTMC to do their clinical rotations in emergency medicine. Based on the timeline, a four-month time jump exceeds the expectations there. So, the second season may be the first and only time the show spends with Ogilvie and Joy. While that tracks on a realistic level, it also works with the characters’ trajectories in the season.

Ogilvie comes into PTMC as a confident fourth-year medical student. He even says that he feels like he is born to be there, but as the season progresses, the fast-paced, intense cases test him as a person and his skills as a student doctor. He leaves his shift debating whether emergency medicine is for him. Meanwhile, Joy walks into PTMC knowing that it’s not for her—pathology is. So, she does a good job, gradually gets better at working with patients, and leaves when her shift is over. Presumably, that is a narratively sound place to leave both characters if The Pitt doesn’t see Ogilvie or Joy land residencies at PTMC in Season 3.

Nurse Emma Nolan - Likely To Stay

Likewise, Nurse Emma Nolan (Laëtitia Hollard) is a recent nursing school graduate who comes to PTMC to shadow the nursing staff. Her first shift at the hospital runs the gamut, from learning how to care for a dead body when Louie, a frequent flyer patient, passes away to being assaulted by an aggressive patient. She also helps Digby, an unhoused man, and assists Charge Nurse Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa) in caring for and collecting evidence from Ilana, a sexual assault victim. She learns a lot in that shift, showing what kind of nurse she can be.

Where Ogilvie and Joy’s exits make more sense, it may be that Emma sticks around for Season 3. The Pitt often reminds the audience, through its characters, that there is a nursing shortage. Emma fits in well with the nursing staff, and it would be exciting to watch her grow as a nurse in the same way that The Pitt continues to show Dr. Whitaker and Dr. Trinity Santos (Isa Briones) growing as doctors in emergency medicine. As for those two, it’s practically assured that they will be back as Dr. Whitaker is a first-year resident and Trinity is a second-year resident in Season 2. The same is true for Dr. Cassie McKay, who is a third-year resident in that season.

Dr. Parker Ellis - Confirmed To Stay

Dr. Parker Ellis (Ayesha Harris) is a fourth-year resident as of Season 2 of The Pitt. Since she works the night shift, there hasn’t been much time spent with Dr. Ellis yet. However, like the rest of the night shift, she leaves an impression. Excitingly, she will be a series regular in the third season. That (presumed) double shift means that Dr. Ellis will be working the day shift, giving the show significantly more opportunities to show what she’s like as a doctor.

It also means there are more chances to learn more about her personal life, rather than catching details during hand-off from the day shift to the night shift. It also feels like the show could be spending more time with her before saying goodbye to her, too. After all, the next season could take the character through finishing her residency. She could (and I hope she does!) become an attending at PTMC. Then again, that leaves her in a similar place to Dr. Collins, Dr. Mohan, and Dr. Langdon. As of now, two of those three have or are confirmed to be leaving the hospital. So, there’s a high chance that the turnover at PTMC will only grow over the next few seasons.
