This Underrated Dinosaur Movie Is The Perfect Follow-Up To ‘The End Of Oak Street’
The End of Oak Street (2026) brings dinosaur fun to an absurd new level as the film follows a family and their street being transported to the time of dinosaurs. Trying to survive the various carnivores, they have to run and fight as they try to get back home.
For a movie like this, Jurassic Park (1993) is a fun but ultimately not fitting follow-up in the world of dinosaur movies. But Luke Sparke's Primitive War (2025) takes a very similar premise that reignited people's love of fun dinosaur movies by placing them in the middle of the Vietnam War. ‘Primitive War’ Is Surprisingly Deep in Its Storyline
Primitive War was inspired by Ethan Pettus' novel of the same name and follows a group of soldiers in the Vietnam War who stumble onto a jungle infested by prehistoric creatures. While trying to find a way out, they learn more about how the dinosaurs arrived in the area and the danger they pose to the present day if they're allowed to spread.
While the movie has an absurd undertone of soldiers vs. dinosaurs, there are a lot of great parallels to combat at the time the movie is set. For example, we may not fully see the violence of the Vietnam War in the film, but the dinosaur violence is a great metaphor for it.
We also see soldiers who are already shell-shocked from the combat they witnessed facing something even more outrageous, and as it breaks some, we see the weight of war in a movie about dinosaurs. In that way, The End of Oak Street is about survival, while Primitive War is about the horrors of war and how it can change a person.
What Makes ‘Primitive War’ a Fun Dinosaur Movie?
For all the intensity of war that serves as the backbone of Primitive War, there's also some great dinosaur chaos that goes far beyond what we've seen in the Jurassic Park movies. In fact, it could be argued that this film has some of the scariest dinosaurs we've seen on the big screen thus far.
For example, the Velociraptors and Spinosaurus are utterly merciless and terrifying. They may seem so, but they aren't hyper-intelligent, as we've been conditioned to believe. What we see are animalistic creatures using tactics familiar to them to eat people, and it's genuinely scary.
The Quetzalcoatlus scene is easily one of the grossest parts of the movies as well because we've never actually seen a flying dinosaur eat its prey. But the moment we see one peck the intestines out of a soldier, we wish we hadn't.
These dinosaurs are scary, and it's something we haven't seen in a long time, and it also shows how hard these creatures are to kill. Primitive War isn't trying to show the majesty of dinosaurs solely because it spends just as much time reminding us why we don't want these creatures around in the modern age.
‘Primitive War’ Is a Perfect Pair to ‘The End of Oak Street’
The End of Oak Street is a dinosaur film that sees a family survive in a world where dinosaurs behave as we think they would in their environment. They aren't the intruders in our world but the other way around, and it makes it exciting as people do their best to survive in their familiar neighborhood that now holds nightmares in every alley.
What makes Primitive War such a great pairing is that the similarities only strengthen what makes it different. We are in the dinosaurs' element, but they are the intruders in our time. Suddenly, in the jungle these soldiers have spent months fighting in, they no longer understand it, and they may as well be in a different world.
The violence of Primitive War only adds to this, as it gives us an idea of how the events of The End of Oak Street would probably go in real life. There's an inherent danger in Primitive War, where every single dinosaur is utterly terrifying, and it's not just about constantly running from dinosaurs.
Primitive War feels like an uncensored concept introduced in The End of Oak Street, and what you get out of it is a near-perfect double feature. If you love dinosaurs but don't want to watch Jurassic Park, Primitive War is the movie for you.
