Insidious: Out of the Further (2026) is here and reminding audiences why this is one of the most beloved supernatural horror franchises out there. This is partly due to director James Wan staying with the franchise he started as a producer. But he's also famous for making The Conjuring series so iconic as well.

Both franchises focus on demons, possession, and malicious ghosts, but their executions are totally different, and where one succeeds, another struggles. With The Conjuring series getting another entry, it feels right to try and compare two of modern horror's most iconic supernatural franchises to see which one is scarier rather than which is better.

The 'Insidious' Franchise Is Famous For Its Imagery

Insidious (2011) changed the face of supernatural horror by making the ghosts that terrorize the characters true physical threats. Coupled with a rich lore surrounding The Further and the fate of a young boy in the balance, it's the perfect recipe that has worked for six films.

The ghosts in this franchise can and will kill; they feel like the Ghostbusters (1984) ghosts with a rap sheet. From ghosts with keys for fingers that take your voice to the Lipstick-Face Demon, these ghosts have looks you can never forget. The fact that they are fighting to get out of the spirit realm also creates a tension that is pushed over the edge when you hear Tiny Tim playing.

Insidious is a universe where spirits aren't simple things that go bump in the night. That's only a symptom of much larger issues where troubled souls in life become worse in death and are elevated from ghosts to monsters who become instantly iconic

'The Conjuring' Franchise Uses Real Life to Elevate Its Horror

The Conjuring (2013) introduced us to a world where the psychic Lorraine Warren and her husband, Ed, have to help a family plagued by the spirit of a witch. But the thing that truly made this franchise intriguing was the fact that it is based on real investigators, and their cases inspire each film.

The Conjuring series sees the Warrens face all manner of evil and demonic spirits, but what makes it stand out is how the scares are crafted. The jump scares are carefully placed, and the way we see the escalation of the hauntings makes the movies naturally unsettling. Whether it's an exorcism on screen or a happy family slowly losing their bearings in a place that should be their home, there's always a sense of dread in The Conjuring films. But with characters like Annabelle and the Nun introduced in these movies, it makes perfect sense.

Even as the films wavered in quality, the scares and slow-burn tension never faltered, leading to some iconic moments fans still talk about. Plus, the films showcase the Warrens more as heroes in the traditional sense, which gives audiences something to root for.

Winner: 'The Conjuring' Franchise Stays With You After the Film Ends

When it comes to a scary movie experience, the Insidious films are a tough franchise to beat. They have solid jump scares and demons and spirits that could easily fill your nightmares. However, there's a quality to these films that reminds you these are just movies. And despite how eerie they are, they don't stick with you. The tangible horror feels safe, as you know they can only really scare you in a haunted house at Halloween Horror Nights.

While not all horror movies need to be overly realistic, when it comes to what's scarier, that's the one thing that gives The Conjuring movies the edge. Most of the terror in these films is unseen and inspired by real cases. We watch the movies for the moment when the hand claps from the shadows or for the creepy spirit hiding in the walls.

These hauntings feel realistic before they become more fantastical, and because of that, even when you leave the theater, the movies stay in your mind. Now you're wondering whether your unassuming house has a spirit in it and, if so, whether it's a friend or an enemy. That's what makes The Conjuring series scarier because, in the end, it's what you can't see that's more frightening than what you can.

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.
