The movies and television shows people choose as their go-to rewatches tend to say more than they're meant to. Most of them are linked to our personalities and eventually come to represent an aspect of our creative or personal life. That concept becomes easier to see when The Boys (2019) showrunner Eric Kripke and cast members Nathan Mitchell and Tomer Capone talk through theirs.

"I don't feel guilty about any of the TV shows I watch," Mitchell told JustWatch, before sharing his love for low-stakes programming. "I love the show, Survivor. There's this show called Fairfax on Amazon that's great. I think it's important to stay in touch with your youth and your inner child. And cartoons really bring that out for me, so I love to watch."

Capone picked a movie he saw as a kid. "I think one of the first times I ever saw a movie was Edward Scissorhands. I was a little child, and I was sitting with my grandpa in the cinema. And I watched that movie, and I didn't understand what [I was] looking at. And I just fell in love with every frame. It was fantastic and big, and I wanted to reach out and be inside that screen."

The Boys showrunner, Eric Kripke, picked three very different movies. "I would list Evil Dead II," he said. "I would list The Blues Brothers, which I just watched again, which was amazing, and the movie Network, which is actually a big inspiration for me for The Boys." Interestingly, Mitchell, Capone, and Kripke's rewatch choices feel more deliberate than they first appear.

Rewatches As Personality Anchors

Research on media reconsumption states that our rewatch habits often act as a psychological map that offers insight into how we regulate our emotions and relate to old memories. These studies also state that people who return to familiar films and shows tend to share traits linked to emotional safety, nostalgia, reflection, and identity-building patterns in how they process the world.

Mitchell's choices (best described as light viewing) of Survivor (2000) and the 2021 adult animated comedy Fairfax hints at a personality that seeks out emotional regulation and comfort. His attraction to low-stakes programming reflects a tendency toward restoring internal balance through predictability and "safe" emotional environments.

Capone's love of Edward Scissorhands (1990) points to a more sensory-driven personality style. His initial focus on being "inside the frame" points to an emotional openness and a strong attachment to formative viewing experiences. This sort of response is often linked to nostalgia-driven identity formation, in which early viewing has an influence on sensitivity and empathy.

Kripke's choices (1987's Evil Dead II, 1980's The Blues Brothers and 1976's Network) essentially reveal his creatively reflective personality. His faves point to someone who re-engages with movies for influence and inspiration. This aligns with research that says repeat viewers often develop stronger pattern recognition and appreciation for structure and artistic technique with every watch.

Why To Watch These Personality-Driven Picks (And What To Watch After)

The cast of Evil Dead 2

In Survivor, contestants compete in strategic and physical challenges for a cash prize. If you enjoy the structured competition with changing dynamics, 2023's The Traitors is a must. Fairfax tells the story of a group of middle schoolers and their never-ending attempts to become popular. It's a very character-focused animated series that's perfect for fans of Big Mouth (2017).

Edward Scissorhands chronicles the life of an artificial man named Edward (Johnny Depp), who struggles to fit into suburban life. If its atmosphere-driven storytelling is the draw, 2003's Big Fish is a good next step. Network follows news anchor Howard Beale (Peter Finch), who becomes famous after he has a breakdown on-air. Every scene feeds its central argument about media, like 2014's Nightcrawler.

Evil Dead II follows Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), who is plagued by supernatural forces while on vacation with his girlfriend. Although the performances do a lot of the heavy lifting, the film expertly uses tone and pacing without losing control of either. Viewers who like stylized horror with momentum will love it and will have to check out Evil Dead Rise (2023) next.

The Blues Brothers follows Jake and Elwood Blues (played by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd) as they set out to save their childhood home. The film builds its story through set pieces rather than narrative alone. It also manages to keep a consistent vibe even as the story escalates. It's a must for viewers who prefer performance-led movies like Baby Driver (2017).
