Netflix's Unabomber (2026) offers a more intimate look into Ted Kaczynski's younger years, particularly his time at Harvard University. As a mathematical prodigy, Kaczynski graduated from high school at 15 years old, which meant entering the Ivy League school at just 16. Here, he became engaged in an abusive psychological experiment under Henry Murray.

While Unabomber suggests the experiment deeply impacted Kaczynski, the notorious domestic terrorist often downplayed it. Instead, he pointed to another period in his life as a "major turning point," and that involved the consideration of gender transition—a subject that Unabomber only briefly touches on.

One of 'Unabomber's Debate Scene Suggests Kaczynski Is Trans

Unabomber makes a point to highlight how abusive and unethical Murray's experiments were, even if a good portion of Kaczynski's interactions are dramatized. In Kaczynski's later debates with Mr. C, the recording of his discussion with Murray and Christiana Morgan plays. Here, Kaczynski confesses, "I don't even belong in this stinking body. I think there is something wrong with me."

This prompts Mr. C to brutally berate Kaczynski by saying he likes to "cross-dress." He also calls him a "pervert," among other cruel insults related to wanting to transition. It clearly upsets Kaczynski, but it's par for the course when it comes to Mr. C's exceptionally vicious style of debate. Afterward, there is no further mention of the topic. Still, the fact it came up at all begs the question of whether Kaczynski actually was trans or ever questioned his gender identity.

Ted Kaczynski's Brief "Gender Identity" Exploration, Explained

That particular Unabomber debate scene certainly highlights the insensitivity surrounding gender identity in the late '50s. However, it's not just a throwaway interaction to prove Mr. C is a brute, either. (We already knew that!) Instead, it foreshadows a later period of Kaczynski's life, in 1966 to be exact, where he experienced "sexual fantasies of becoming a woman."

Does that make Kaczynski trans? Not necessarily. It's important to note that Kaczynski's gender questioning was complicated by other issues, which became public in 1998 after the release of his 47-page psychiatric evaluation. There's also the fact that he lived during a time when exploration of gender was not encouraged or supported by most. That said, Kaczynski's gender questioning seemed to stem from sexual fantasy, as reported by The Michigan Daily.

The psychiatric profile explains that Kaczynski suffered from sexual repression and shame surrounding sexual thoughts. (Unabomber showed a bit of this when a young Kaczynski flees from his date after she kisses him.) During this time, he believed that if he transitioned into a woman, then he could romantically be with women more confidently.

Kaczynski even went as far as scheduling a psychiatric appointment to advocate for gender reassignment surgery. However, he changed his mind in the waiting room, discussed other matters with the psychiatrist, and then later admitted to fantasizing about killing the same psychiatrist. As Kaczynski himself said, this was a "major turning point" and "like a phoenix, I burst from the ashes of my despair to a glorious new hope." This "new hope" was killing for what Kaczynski labeled a greater purpose.

So, in short, based on the evidence from Kaczynski's profile, he isn't trans. Being transgender doesn't translate to sexual fantasy. Instead, it's about a person's gender identity, which is a deep internal sense of self across all areas of life. Of course, sexual fantasy can get entangled; however, Kaczynski's profile doesn't suggest his gender questioning was aimed at understanding his sense of self, but as a means to have sexual relationships with women. That's very different, and it's a shame Unabomber only touched the surface of this facet of Kaczynski's life, especially since he cited it as such a major piece of becoming the Unabomber.
