'Stuart Fails To Save The Universe': What Sheldon, Leonard & Howard Have To Do With The Apocalypse
The official logline for the 2026 HBO Max series Stuart Fails to Save the Universe makes it sound like the titular comic book store owner is the reason the universe needs saving in the first place. According to the official synopsis, Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman) accidentally breaks a device built by Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), triggering a multiverse apocalypse.
With reality hanging by a thread, "Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus), his geologist friend Bert (Brian Posehn), and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we've come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don't go well."
The premise sounds fairly straightforward. Stuart breaks the machine, reality falls apart, and he spends the rest of the series trying to undo the damage. The pilot episode, however, paints a slightly different picture. Early on in the story, a Stuart from an alternate universe meets up with the original Stuart and reveals the real reason for the apocalypse.
Stuart May Not Have Caused The Apocalypse After All
As luck would have it, the apocalypse wasn't caused because Stuart accidentally broke the machine. According to the time-traveling Stuart, the machine Sheldon, Leonard, and Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) were working on just stopped working the way it was supposed to. While this could be seen as a convenient way to shift the blame from Stuart, the chain of events is confirmed by another character.
Later in the episode, Stuart runs into Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar), who, independently of the alternate Stuart, explains that the multiverse started collapsing because the machine built by Sheldon, Leonard, and Howard malfunctioned. Raj's explanation essentially clears Stuart of any blame for starting the disaster. Instead, he seems to have inherited the impossible job of cleaning it up after the fact.
That doesn't necessarily mean the official synopsis is wrong. The series may be holding back a major twist, and the alternate Stuart could easily have his own reasons for leaving out important details. Based on what the premiere establishes, though, it seems the real culprit isn't Stuart at all. It's the mechanical oversight by Sheldon, Leonard, and Howard.
Did 'The Big Bang Theory' Already Set This Up
The first episode never explains exactly when Sheldon, Leonard, and Howard built the device responsible for the multiverse apocalypse. It also doesn't say whether audiences have seen it before. Still, longtime The Big Bang Theory fans may remember that the trio once worked on a government-funded invention that disappeared before anyone ever found out what became of it.
The storyline begins in Season 10, Episode 2, "The Military Miniaturization." After developing their quantum gyroscope, Howard, Leonard, and Sheldon are approached by Colonel Richard Williams (Dean Norris), who wants the United States Air Force to fund the project. Although Howard originally invents the gyroscope, all three become involved in adapting and miniaturizing the technology.
After Sheldon confidently promises they can complete the work in just two months, things become more complicated. The project quickly becomes classified, security around the team's work increases, and the trio gradually loses control over something that had started as an ordinary research project at Caltech. That storyline reaches its conclusion in Season 10, Episode 23, "The Gyroscopic Collapse."
After months of work, Howard, Leonard, and Sheldon finally complete the project, only to discover that the Department of Defense has confiscated the gyroscope and all of their research. They're told the project is now classified and everything related to it belongs to the government. That's the last the audience ever hears about it. At the time, it felt like a fairly typical sitcom ending.
Was The Apocalypse Machine Hiding In Plain Sight?
Looking back now, though, it's difficult not to wonder whether that loose end was more important than anyone realized. To be clear, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe never says the apocalypse machine and the military gyroscope are the same invention. Right now, there's no evidence confirming they're connected. But there are enough similarities to make the theory worth considering.
Both projects involve Sheldon, Leonard, and Howard working together on an ambitious piece of technology that pushes well beyond conventional science. One of those inventions also vanished into government hands without any real explanation, while the other somehow ends up damaging reality across multiple universes.
That could all be a coincidence. Then again, television writers rarely revisit the same combination of characters by accident. Whether the new series eventually links the apocalypse machine back to the military project remains to be seen, but for now, it's one of the more interesting possibilities raised by the Stuart Fails to Save the Universe premiere.
