‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Writers Explain How Its ‘Tragic’ Revelation Was Almost Very Different – EXCLUSIVE

For all the tragedy that Peter Parker (Tom Holland) goes through in 2026's Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the movie's most heartbreaking revelation actually has very little to do with him. The most devastating scene comes when Jean Grey (Sadie Sink) realizes that her sister Sara, who she spends the entire movie searching for, is already dead.

For most of Brand New Day, Jean doesn't know where Sara is. But she does have one thing to go on: a telepathic message from her sister (who is also a mutant) containing the words "V-Max." Jean naturally assumes that this refers to a weapon or some sort of secret holding facility hidden away by the Department of Damage Control.

Hoping that this "V-Max" clue will eventually lead her to Sara, Jean attacks the organization until she is captured and taken to the same place where Sara had been held. Damage Control begins experimenting on her, and it's during one of those cruel sessions that Jean looks up at the ceiling and notices the old, weathered Vent Max label on an air duct.

‘V-Max’ Was Always Meant To Be A Heartbreaking Fake-Out

Because parts of the lettering had worn away, the only clear letters are "V---Max." That's when Jean finally understands. Sara wasn't sending her the name of a secret project. She was sending her the last thing she saw before she died as a result of being experimented on. And according to Brand New Day writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, the tragedy of the reveal was the plan all along.

"Ultimately we knew," McKenna told JustWatch. "That story point - not knowing that her sister was dead, not having that revelation until she was captured by Damage Control - we just knew that it was going to be a really horrifying revelation that the clue actually led her not to an opportunity to rescue her sister but the sad revelation, the tragic revelation that her sister had died."

The only part they were unsure about was the type of pointless clue that Jean would be following. The writers went through several different versions of what Sara could have seen in that room before settling on V-Max. "I think there was [sic] various versions of what that clue was, that had led her there," McKenna explained. "It had different names… pink snowflakes at one point."

Settling on "V-Max" makes the most sense since it sounds like the kind of acronym that means something in a Marvel movie. After all, this is a universe where names like S.H.I.E.L.D. and H.Y.D.R.A. actually refer to very powerful organizations that play a much larger part in the movies than any non-comic book reader may have initially imagined.

Jean's Powers Have Always Been Tied To Tragedy

Tragedy being the catalyst for Jean tapping into her mutant powers has its roots in the comics. McKenna specifically pointed to the death of a close friend in the source material that led to her developing her abilities. "I think it was her seeing in the comics her friend Annie Richardson die that gave her, her first emotional leveling up [or] the immersion of her powers in the comics," he said.

So the writers weren't just looking for a way to explain what "V-Max" meant. They were trying to figure out what revelation would be powerful enough to completely break Jean emotionally. And, at the same time, push her powers to another level. And Jean learning that the clue she had been chasing was just the last thing her sister saw before she died was it.

"We just knew that it would be this horrifying revelation that her sister was dead that would lead to her emotional traumatic outburst that would then lead to her leveling up as a mutant as is so much the case in the mutant stories," McKenna explained, before adding that the entire team of writers talked about the best way to make that moment as "powerful" and as "tragic" as possible.

Brand New Day seems to be only the beginning of Jean's story. After Peter realizes that she is not the bad guy and vice versa, the pair share a quiet moment of reflection, bonding over their respective losses. While Peter goes off on his own, Jean is seen leaving New York City on a bus. The implication is that she will eventually end up at Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
