Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) is truly embracing its name with new additions like Punisher, the Hulk, and potentially Sadie Sink as Jean Grey. But one addition is very hard to find unless you have the subtitles on during the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer. We now know that Tramell Tillman will be playing William Metzger in the film, but his presence in the comics was tied more to the X-Men than toSpider-Man.

With that in mind, it’s possible that his addition to the movie could tease a big change to the status of mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His debut could even pull on a thread that has been teased since as far back as Ms. Marvel (2022).

'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Has A Heavy Focus On Damage Control

Tramell Tillman in Spider-Man Brand New Day

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has many moving parts and elements from the wider MCU that are being explored, specifically the Department of Damage Control. What was introduced as a clean-up crew for superpowered incidents in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) has since been reformed to hunt down superpowered threats and detain them.

In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tramell Tillman’s William Metzger works for Damage Control and seems to be working with Spider-Man to find a threat that far exceeds their means. While we don’t know exactly what the threat is, all points seem to be leading to Sadie Sink’s character.

But even though Spider-Man is working with the department, it doesn’t mean that he’s on their side, as Damage Control has proven that it has many secrets hidden below the surface. Considering the history Metzger has in the Marvel Universe, specifically with the X-Men, it wouldn’t be a shock to assume one of those secrets is tied to that.

William Metzger Could Be Introducing Anti-Mutant Measures

While William Metzger didn’t have the same prominence as other mutant antagonists like Henry Gyrich or Senator Kelly, he was just as dangerous, working on his own and with the government. In short, he’s most popular for being a major player in the anti-mutant movements in the comics.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s latest trailer has already established Metzger talking to Spider-Man about threats that we can’t see and that are incredibly powerful. Not to mention, another trailer plays heavily on the idea of metamorphosis in relation to Peter Parker’s new powers. However, mutation is a metamorphosis in itself.

When compiling these ideas together, it makes sense to think that Metzger may be trying to turn a section or all of Damage Control into an anti-mutant militia like the one in the comics. As people see them as more of a threat, it becomes easier for the government to warm up to the idea.

Damage Control has already danced with the idea as it took Tony Stark’s drones in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and the next time we saw it was in hunting down Kamala Khan, a mutant, in Ms. Marvel. For years, the pieces have been in place for Metzger to take advantage of the situation.

These Additions Could Lead To The Sentinel Program In The MCU

Magneto and Sentinels in X-Men Days of Future Past

Between Metzger in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and his history with mutant hate, as well as Damage Control already using Stark drones to hunt mutants, all points are leading to Damage Control being the place for hunting them down. Therefore, as the drones become less helpful, they have to evolve, leading to the Sentinel Program.

Sentinels are potentially the greatest enemies of mutants, as their presence almost always leads to the end of humanity as a whole. From the movies to the cartoons, some of the best X-Men stories are tied to the Sentinels and the threats they present.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a fresh start in more than one way, and with the addition of Metzger, there’s a clear path to a dark future for the MCU. The Sentinels are some of the scariest characters in the X-Men’s world, and as mutants become more prominent, they won’t be far behind. But that can only happen if it chooses to go down that route, and if it does, it could make Spider-Man: Brand New Day the most important movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn't remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter Parker he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see.
