What Happened To Punisher On Staten Island? Peter & Frank's 'Brand New Day' Fight, Explained

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) continues the tradition of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man films featuring other heroes from within the franchise. In this case, the Punisher plays a more prominent role and builds a fun relationship with Peter Parker.

But the reason that he's here in the first place traces back to an event that took place on Staten Island. While many may think this connects to the events of Daredevil: Born Again (2025), a comical scene masks the real story of what happened on Staten Island. It's both hilarious and totally in character for both vigilantes.

What Happened With The Punisher And Spider-Man On Staten Island?

When Jean Grey learned who Spider-Man was, she made it a mission to stop him at any cost. This meant hunting down MJ and threatening to kill her so he couldn't catch Jean. Of course, this led Spider-Man to find MJ and get her somewhere safe, and after one close call, he went to the only person he could trust: the Punisher.

After surviving his traps, Frank Castle confronts Spider-Man and immediately turns him down. But when Spidey brings up Staten Island, it starts an argument. From the Punisher's perspective, he had his target right where he wanted him and knew what he was doing, and Spider-Man messed up his entire operation.

But from Spidey's perspective, he saw Frank missing one drug dealer, and it was him who webbed him up and kicked him into a shipping container. They may not see eye to eye, but the fact that Frank conceded to help Spider-Man had to mean he was at least half right about what happened on Staten Island.

Where Was The Kingpin Holding People In 'Daredevil: Born Again'?

In Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, the Punisher infiltrates Fisk's freeport base of Red Hook to take on the AVTF. But he gets captured and imprisoned, only to escape in a post-credits scene. We never knew how Frank got out safely, but considering how many times Staten Island was brought up, it was easy to assume Spider-Man helped.

However, Red Hook was off of Brooklyn on a lone island near New York City. This confirms two things. One is that Frank Castle got captured and escaped on his own, probably leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. The second is that he remained active for some time, encountering Spider-Man after the fact.

While the truth has been revealed, albeit secretly, about what happened to the Punisher after Daredevil: Born Again, it also shows that Spider-Man was still active but not to the extent that he was running into other heroes in the MCU. Meanwhile, Frank, after The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026), was merciless since finding a new purpose as a vigilante again.

Unfortunately, it also wouldn't be the first time we wanted Spider-Man to appear in another MCU project, considering he was even mentioned in Born Again Season 1. But while that day could still come, it's nice to know he was still around in some capacity.

Spider-Man Saving Punisher Tells Us Everything About Their Relationship

The fact that Spider-Man saved the Punisher and they have a rapport tells us a lot about how old their relationship is and, more so, what the Punisher has been up to since he embraced his destiny as a killer of killers. It also shows just how focused he has been in his war on crime.

In terms of the MCU timeline, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the most current entry and follows One Last Kill. Because of that, it means that Frank Castle hasn't been punishing for very long following what happened in One Last Kill and Born Again. Therefore, when they reunite in the film, they couldn't have known each other for more than a year at most.

That also means that Frank Castle has been making a lot of headway in his mission and taking all manner of criminals without mercy. Especially if it's bad enough that Spider-Man has to travel all the way to Staten Island to deal with it all. 

But even if the bond isn't one that's been around for a while, it's strong. They couldn't be more different, but they lean on their morals and convictions, and that connects them in a way that was only possible thanks to Staten Island.
