Hulk's Secret Superpower Is Finally MCU Canon
The Hulk is one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) reminded us of that after years of the Smart Hulk persona being used. Now, angry as ever, he uses all of his power, including one that we haven't seen in action yet.
One of the things that makes Hulk so powerful in Marvel Comics is his ability to push back against telepaths trying to invade his mind. In the past, we've seen hints of that in the MCU, but he's never outright stopped one until now, and it finally canonizes an impressive skill.
Why Could The Hulk Stop Jean Grey In 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'?
While trying to break into a Damage Control building, Jean Grey had to use Bruce Banner as Smart Hulk to get what she wanted. This meant that she was able to infiltrate Bruce Banner's mind to force a transformation and then use that strength to her advantage against Spider-Man and Punisher.
However, when that connection was severed, Bruce reverted to his human form while the Hulk form came out, since Bruce describes that she broke something in his head. As the Savage Hulk, Jean could no longer get inside, as he had suppressed Banner as well, proving that the Hulk's strength went beyond the physical.
In the MCU, we don't know exactly how the Hulk's mind is formed, as the comics have shown he has multiple personalities. We may not know this in the MCU, but one thing that seems to have crossed into movie canon is that his rage can dictate who gets in. The madder he is, the harder he is to control.
Marvel Comics Explain Why Hulk Can Stop Telepaths From Getting In His Head
In the comics, Hulk is a far more complex character with stories that try to unravel the mystery of the character and his many personas. Due to the trauma Bruce Banner received at the hands of his father, leading to the death of his mother, the Hulk we know best was formed to keep him safe.
It was the gamma radiation that gave these personas a form to use to represent these personalities, and while Savage Hulk is one, there's also Joe Fixit, Professor Hulk, and even Devil Hulk. Because of these layers, a telepath could never fully control the Hulk because controlling one means they aren't controlling the others.
Furthermore, there's the Hulk's rage, a key factor of his character that proves there are rare occasions where brute force is the answer. Due to the anger the Hulk feels and the fact that it directly correlates to his physical strength, a telepath may gain control but will be forced out the minute he realizes someone is in his head trying to control him.
Jean Grey experienced this in Brand New Day, but in the comics it made the Hulk a threat to every type of hero because everyone always tries to contain him at least once. In the end, coexistence is the only way to live in a world with the Hulk, and even telepaths must learn that the hard way.
Hulk Can Possibly Still Be Manipulated In Other Ways
While the Hulk is unstoppable against telepaths, there are still ways to control him, though they are far more complex. In Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), the Scarlet Witch, a telepath in her own way, controlled the Hulk and put him in a rage, but she wasn't controlling him. Instead, she sparked his rage by sliding into Bruce Banner's mind and making him rage.
It's something that could work then but may be harder now, and it also holds the key to how to manipulate a character like the Hulk. He may have a mind that can't be controlled, but he could still be easily manipulated. Whether it's leading him to believe a friend is a foe or fabricating a danger to frame the Hulk, it's not impossible to "get in his head" the traditional way.
Nevertheless, what Jean Grey broke also gave the Hulk a natural failsafe to make sure this type of invasion of privacy never happens again. With Emma Frost coming and Jean Grey getting stronger as well, it's an asset that could help the Hulk in the future.
