'Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Bath Scene, Explained: Why Peter Really Won't Take It All Off

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) has a lot of fun bouncing the titular Wall-Crawler off many of the other Marvel heroes, but it especially enjoys making Peter Parker feel uncomfortable around Black Widow. When Spider-Man needs intel that he can’t get otherwise, he turns to Yelena Romanoff for help. However, she’ll only meet him in her favorite bathhouse.
It’s a silly little beat that quietly does a lot of character building for both heroes, establishing them as direct foils while also moving the plot along. It also could be setting up some changes for their dynamic in the future, even laying possible groundwork for a romantic connection. Here’s what happens in Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s bathhouse scene and what it means for the MCU going forward.
What Happens In 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Bathhouse Scene?
After stopping a tank from being driven into Damage Control’s New York City headquarters, Spider-Man turns to Black Widow for help. Introduced in Black Widow (2021) as the sister of founding Avenger Natasha Romanoff, Yelena has become one of the fixtures of the modern MCU, appearing in key roles in Hawkeye (2021), Marvel Zombies (2025), and Thunderbolts* (2025). Her appearance in Brand New Day builds off that latter film, with Yelena formally a member of the Avengers and working as a resource for Spider-Man.
Yelena has Spider-Man visit her “office” to speak, requiring him to strip down to his mask and boxers to join her in a sauna bath. The two sit in the water for a bit until Yelena shares what intel she has. She also takes the chance to poke fun at Spider-Man and his status as a “small potatoes” hero compared to the Avengers. She later briefly reappears during a video call with Spider–Man, offering more input about his mission (and revealing that she really does consider the sauna to be her office). The scene underscores her current position in the universe, as well as establishing her dynamic with the titular hero.
Why Does Spider-Man Keep His Mask On?
Throughout the scene in the bathhouse, Spider-Man refuses to take off his mask. Yelena, alongside the Punisher, enjoys needling Spider-Man about his unwillingness to reveal himself to others. While she initially assumes it is out of shyness, something Peter acknowledges is part of it, it’s largely based on Spider-Man’s decision that no one can know who he is.
Having struggled to accept his loneliness in light of cutting MJ and Ned out of his life in the climax of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Peter refusing to let anyone in is a major aspect of his arc in Brand New Day. As such, his refusal to even let his guard down with other heroes is a major element of his purposeful disconnect from others. It’s indicative of Spider-Man’s true arc in the film and his trauma.
Why Is Yelena In The Bathhouse Scene?
Yelena’s inclusion in the bathhouse scene is an interesting touch for Brand New Day to add. Is 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Bathhouse Scene Secretly Romantic?
An unexpected wrinkle of the bathhouse scene in New Brand Day is the idea that it could be setting up a Spider-Man//Black Widow romance. Although the two don’t have that sort of dynamic in Marvel Comics, Peter and Yelena are arguably two of the franchise’s primary characters at this point. They are also both pointedly single at the end of their respective adventures, with Peter finally seeming to accept the idea that MJ no longer has any feelings for him. This could be teeing up Spider-Man to get a new love interest, which could be Yelena.
Even if Peter and Yelena having a romantic connection is in the cards for the MCU in the long term, that’s not what is going on in the scene. Their connection in Brand New Day is much more akin to the one he has with Frank Castle, a somewhat casual working relationship that has the potential to become something more meaningful. While Peter and Frank get the screen time together to develop a friendship genuinely, Yelena’s two scenes and snarky attitude don’t do much to set her up as a romantic foil to Peter.

While Yelena’s cameo in Brand New Day is fun, it’s perhaps most important as part of the inevitable set-up to Avengers: Doomsday (2026). That film is already set to unite the different factions currently running around the MCU, including the New Avengers. Yelena being reiterated as a member of the Avengers in Brand New Day makes sure that audiences remember where she was last seen and what her place in the world is going into the next big blockbuster entries of the franchise.
Getting screentime with Spider-Man could also be crucial in establishing a connection between the pair. Yelena could even try to recruit Spider-Man to her side during the events of Doomsday, which would pay off the post-credits scene that teases Spider-Man going off-world for some upcoming situation. While the bathhouse scene is a minor but memorable beat in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it could go a long way toward setting up Spider-Man’s role in the next two Avengers movies.
