Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015) feels like an extended episode of the series with all the charm of a Wallace & Gromit short as Shaun accidentally gets his flock lost in the city while trying to make his day more fun. To make matters worse, the farmer he tricked to sleep longer gets hit on the head and gets amnesia.
For a movie that is trying to go bigger than the average short, Shaun the Sheep Movie was a fantastic start and a great first film to watch for any newcomer. It gives you just enough to understand the show if you never saw it but raises the stakes in a way the show never could. It was an award nominee for a reason and deserves some attention.
A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon (2019) takes all the fun of the original film and ramps things up to the realm of science fiction. The film follows Shaun, who finds an alien crash-landing near his farm and tries to get her back to her planet before being captured by the Ministry for Alien Detection.
The ambition of Farmageddon is what makes the movie so much fun and easily the most ambitious idea from the animation company since they worked on Chicken Run (2000). A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon isn't afraid to stay true to its roots while trying something strange, and it works perfectly. Easily the strangest film of the trilogy, it's also one of the most fun.
Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom leans into the spooky season as Shaun tries to protect his farm from a monster as they approach Halloween. A hilarious and just spooky-enough-to-be-fun journey, it's a wonderful seasonal film to add to Shaun the Sheep's filmography.
A great comparison film to The Beast of Mossy Bottom would be Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005) Both films are trying to be scarier, but it's still a fun story of misunderstanding. Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom is a new addition to Shaun's story and hopefully means that more films and shorts are on the way because, even as a spin-off, Shaun the Sheep stands on his own as a great series worth watching.
