'Rick And Morty' Season 9, Episode 1 Ending, Explained
Rick and Morty (2013) returns! Season 9 comes out the gate with a mythology episode that brings Evil Morty back. The last time we saw the antagonist was in Season 7, Episode 5, "Unmortricken," when he reluctantly allied himself with Rick C-137 to take down Rick Prime. After, Evil Morty seized the opportunity to steal the Omega Device, you know, that thing that lets the user permanently erase every variant of a person across every universe.
Evil Morty took the device as a way of securing his privacy. However, Rick and Morty Season 9, Episode 1, "There's Something About Morty," reveals that's not entirely true. When Morty discovers that Rick and Evil Morty still communicate, it spirals into more revelations. Evil Morty and Rick don't just text; they frequently team up to combat universal threats, and you can bet this makes Morty pretty jealous.
The kicker is, Rick isn't doing this out of the kindness of his own heart; he's doing it so Evil Morty won't wipe out his family with the Omega Device. Essentially, Evil Morty has a metaphorical gun to Rick's head.
Evil Morty Gets His Due
As expected, Rick doesn't let anyone get the better of him, even another super genius like Evil Morty. After celebrating the defeat of the Collective at a diner, Rick (off-screen) manages to enter Evil Morty's lair and destroy the Omega Device. As he explains to Morty in the ship, "I put the blueprints for that dumb f***ing Omega Device in the Omega Device… they've been wiped from every possible reality."
This is a big victory for Rick. However, he knows Evil Morty will seek revenge, and he's right. Despite deploying all of his high-tech science and best defenses, Evil Morty infiltrates the bunker and faces off against Rick in a long, well-matched battle. While it's a pretty spectacular showcase of Evil Morty's power, Rick ultimately gets the better of him by tipping off the Time Police (remember the testicle guys from "A Rickle in Time?"). After Evil Morty uses the time device that Rick showed him how to make to freeze time, the Time Police immediately swarm him. They take Evil Morty away in cuffs for a life sentence in prison.
While it's possible (and likely) that Evil Morty will eventually escape prison, the end credits of Season 9, Episode 1, "There's Something About Morty," show that Evil Morty made it to the prison. And, apparently, there's no special torture or sci-fi hijinks, just good old-fashioned jail time.
How 'Rick And Morty' Season 9, Episode 1, Changes The Lore

Lore-wise, the two biggest pieces of information to walk away with are: no more Omega Device and no more Evil Morty… at least for now. Even if Evil Morty returns, the Omega Device's destruction offers big pay-off for what happened in "Unmortricken." Now, not only is Prime Rick dead, but the device used to kill Diane—Rick's wife—is finally out of the picture. In that respect, it feels like a cathartic episode for Rick.
In the other corner is Morty, who once again spends the episode navigating feelings of unworthiness and inferiority, especially compared to Evil Morty. However, by the conclusion of "There's Something About Morty," Morty seems to realize that Evil Morty isn't as confident and heartless as he seems. In fact, Evil Morty seems jealous that Morty has Rick C-137 all to himself, and more importantly, that Rick C-137 continues to choose Morty despite his "unremarkability."
That's the ironic part of all this. Despite Evil Morty initially taking the Omega Device so Rick will leave him alone, he ends up using it to keep Rick around. The galaxy is a lonely place, and deep down, it seems Evil Morty wishes he had a family like Morty and a Rick like Rick C-137.
