Ransom Canyon (2025), the neo-Western romantic drama, is set to return for its second season just a year after its first season debuted. Since the show lives on Netflix, I have to applaud that turnaround. It’s especially rewarding after all the cliffhangers in the first season. Waiting any longer would be less than ideal for fans who want to know what’s next. Showrunner, executive producer, and writer April Blair told Netflix’s TUDUM, “We have these three tenets, which are land, love, and legacy. We stick with that—and we have a little more fun this season.”

The second season, which premieres on Thursday, July 23, picks up six months after the first. Staten (Josh Duhamel) is “fighting to reclaim his legacy after being unseated as trustee of his family’s Double K Ranch,” per the season’s description. Meanwhile, Quinn (Minka Kelly) is trying to decide between the titular small town and New York City. Many returning main characters will join Duhamel and Kelly. However, Deadline exclusively reported that Eoin Macken and Andrew Liner, who play Davis and Reid Collins, respectively, won’t return as series regulars. So, who is still in Ransom Canyon for the second season and what may be in store for them?

Minka Kelly as Quinn O’Grady

Minka Kelly as Quinn O'Grady in Ransom Canyon

As a fan of Lyla Garrity and Friday Night Lights (2006), it is comforting to see Minka Kelly on another show in Texas. In Ransom Canyon, Kelly leads as Quinn O’Grady, the owner of Gracie’s Dance Hall and a romantic. In adulthood, Quinn finds herself in a bit of a love triangle with Staten and his brother-in-law, Davis. Quinn eventually things with Davis, and it seems like it will finally be the right time for her and Staten.

Instead, they break up, and Quinn takes a job as a concert pianist with the New York Philharmonic. When she returns to Ransom Canyon, the trailer teases tension with Staten. Not to mention, Quinn also has a new love interest: Oliver (Ben Robson). As an Animal Kingdom (2016) fan, I’m excited to see Robson join Ransom Canyon. Aside from romantic drama, Quinn will also be sharing scenes with her mother, Claire O’Grady (Patricia Clarkson).

Josh Duhamel as Staten Kirkland

Josh Duhamel as Staten Kirkland in Ransom Canyon

Josh Duhamel’s Staten Kirkland is the emotionally distant owner of the Double K Ranch. In fairness to him, he grapples with a lot of grief before and during Ransom Canyon’s first season. Before the show even starts, he has lost his wife, Amalah, and his son, Randall Kirkland, to cancer and a drunk driver, respectively. The culprit of the latter crime is one of the season’s overarching mysteries, and it reaches its resolution by the end of the first season.

Staten pushes people away in his personal and professional spheres because of all of that. Gradually, he lets Quinn in, but he is still overwhelmed by grief. Then again, it seems like Ransom Canyon sees a Happily Ever After between them. They are one of the show’s main romances. It’s just that the characters have a lot of work to do in the meantime. Perhaps it means good things for Staten’s vulnerability that Season 2 plans to dive into his personal life even more. Steve Howey is set to join the show as Staten’s half-brother, Levi.

Marianly Tejada as Ellie Estevez

Marianly Tejada as Ellie Estevez in Ransom Canyon

Ellie Estevez quickly became one of my favorite characters in Ransom Canyon. I was excited to see Marianly Tejada in a new role. I really enjoyed her work as Bronwyn Rojas in the two seasons of Peacock’s One of Us Is Lying (2021). Even removing that previous role from the equation, I really love Ellie. I find her deeply interesting, and I can’t wait to see her in Season 2.

In the first season, she’s a former nurse who often looks after Cap. She’s also a bartender at Gracie’s Dance Hall, and eventually, she becomes the rightful co-owner of the establishment. She also has a past with a deputy named Kai (Justin Johnson Cortez) and a present and potential future with a new guy to Ransom Canyon: Yancy (Jack Schumacher). Tejada and Schumacher have some of the best chemistry on the show. I will never shut up about it! I’m really rooting for Ellie and Yance, but their relationship, which has the chance of becoming a marriage, is in jeopardy after one of the season’s biggest cliffhangers.

Jack Schumacher as Yancy Grey

Jack Schumacher as Yancy Grey in Ransom Canyon

What is that cliffhanger? Well, Yancy falls hard and fast for Ellie and ends up proposing to her. They’re going to have a short and sweet wedding on Fuller Ranch. It’s worth noting that he’s the one who recently inherited the land that belonged to Cap. Lincoln Fuller, Cap and Ruth’s (Penelope Richards) only son, died before the events of Ransom Canyon. As the first season reveals, he is not Cap’s only son, so the land goes to Yancy after Cap’s death.

All of that sounds good, optimistic even, for Yancy, who is finally footing in this new, tightly-knit town. Unfortunately for him and his future with Ellie, his past catches up with him in the season finale. Ellie runs into someone whom the camera does not show but who introduces herself as Yancy’s wife. It’s certainly interesting that Yancy proposes to another woman knowing that he is still married. So, there will be fallout from all of this in Season 2. Heidi Engerman has joined Ransom Canyon as Yancy’s wife, who remains unnamed at the time of writing.

Lizzy Greene as Lauren Brigman

Lizzy Greene as Lauren Brigman in Ransom Canyon

Lauren Brigman is a character who has her eye on life outside of Ransom Canyon. She’s a star cheerleader, and her dad, Dan Brigman (Philip Winchester), is the town’s sheriff. Both of those parts of Lauren’s life become increasingly complicated throughout the first season. She suffers a shoulder injury that leaves her chances for a college scholarship in doubt. I imagine the second season will have her reflecting on whether she can still attend the University of Texas at Austin.

I also imagine there will be even more romantic drama for Lauren and Lucas (Garrett Wareing), who actually are one of the more consistent pairings in the first season. That is until the truth comes out about her mother, Margaret (Sarah Minnich), who is revealed to be the drunk driver who killed Randall Kirkland. So, Lauren’s father has to arrest her mother. The Ransom Canyon Season 2 trailer sees Lauren growing closer to Kit (Casey W. Johnson), who is Lucas’ brother, was in a relationship with Lauren’s mother, and covered for Margaret about the crime. Ransom Canyon’s showrunner April Blair says that Lauren is “caught in this pull between these two young men who represent different things for her.” Honestly, I’m excited to see Lizzy Greene play that.

Garrett Wareing as Lucas Russell

Garrett Wareing as Lucas Russell in Ransom Canyon

Garrett Wareing is also back as Lucas Russell, who has plenty of options ahead of him in Ransom Canyon Season 2. The first season ends with him receiving several offers to Ivy League colleges. I’m curious to see if his opportunities cause tension with Lauren, who has lost her main one. I’m also looking forward to seeing how Lucas’ family drama does or doesn’t impact his future.

All of that is to be discovered, but I think I’m mostly excited to see how Ransom Canyon Season 2 digs into Lucas and Kit’s dynamic. The latter is Lucas’ primary guardian, and he’s made things quite complicated for Lucas. It seems like Wareing is also interested in those familial dynamics, even with Lucas and Kit’s father. After the first season, he told TV Line, “I would love to see how that could shake things up in Ransom Canyon if he returns.” I couldn’t agree more. The more interpersonal drama in Ransom Canyon, the better!

Passions run deep in a small Texas town, as three ranching dynasties fight for their land, their legacies and the people they love.
