When it comes to creepy toy horror game adaptations, Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) is going to have to make some room. Enter Poppy Playtime, a video game just as terrifying as FNAF with lore to match. And just as FNAF gets its third movie, Poppy Playtime is finally getting a movie adaptation, thanks to Legendary Pictures, as the saga reaches Chapter 6.
Below, we’re going to give a rundown of everything you need to know about Poppy Playtime. From the core story to the toy monsters and game mechanics will be covered. But more importantly, what makes Poppy Playtime different from FNAF from the eyes of a horror fan?
What’s ‘Poppy Playtime’ About?
Created and published by Indie publisher Mob Entertainment in 2021, Poppy Playtime is a survival horror game told in chapters. At the moment, there are five chapters with a sixth on the way. The player controls a former employee of a toy factory for Playtime Co. who receives a letter years after the factory was mysteriously abandoned. Through puzzles, you survive the horrors lurking in every room and around every corner while unearthing what happened all those years ago.
The horrors in this abandoned factory are the toys themselves. There’s the titular Poppy, a mysterious doll you’re not quite sure is on your side or not. There’s Huggy Wuggy, a tall blue toy monster with long arms and a mouth full of rows of sharp teeth. Mommy Long Legs is a pink stretchy toy monster who is equally protective and vicious. Then there’s Boxy Boo, a trickster of a toy monster who also kept employees at the toy factory in line. And these are only four of the various creepy toy monsters in Poppy Playtime.
An essential part of Poppy Playtime is the GrabPack toy that the player uses. It’s a wearable backpack with interchangeable artificial hands attached via a steel wire. This toy allows the player to interact with the world around them. You can use it to grab, pull, and collect objects. But you can also carry electrical impulses from one power source to another. Due to how convenient it was, GrabPacks were given to Playtime Co. employees.
How Does The Success Of ‘Poppy Playtime’ Compare To ‘FNAF’?
While Poppy Playtime is smaller in scope than FNAF when it comes to the amount of games or toys, it’s been gaining a staggering amount of fans because of its ease of access on YouTube, atmosphere, character design, and even its music. Many fans have even said that it’s more engaging than FNAF because you actually get to move around and solve puzzles instead of sitting in a security room and waiting for the monsters to come to you. As such, it’s been a hit with first-time gamers and hardcore horror fans alike.
As the popularity of Poppy Playtime kept growing, Mod Entertainment created a version that could be played on Roblox and even put out toys. But personally, I would say that the popularity of Poppy Playtime is due to its lore and not the creepy toys. Every chapter builds on the last one, to the point where you don’t mind facing the horrors that are chasing you through this toy factory because you know that it will mean getting answers to how this factory came to be, why the toys developed into such violent beings, and what happened on that mysterious day when everyone disappeared.
There’s also the human element of Poppy Playtime. Humans created these toys to be children’s companions, but by the time you get to Chapter 5, you realize that these aren’t just simple toys. And the destruction that these toy monsters are causing comes from a real human place. Because of this, I feel like Poppy Playtime could be a bigger success than FNAF when it comes to toy horror game adaptations. Until then, we’ll all be waiting for Chapter 6.
What About The ‘Poppy Playtime’ Movie Adaptation?
In 2022, Mob Entertainment announced that it was partnering with Studio71 to develop and produce a film based on Poppy Playtime, according to Deadline. Its hope from the very start was that this would lead to an adaptation franchise. At that time, Mob Entertainment was in early talks to bring The Lego Movie (2014) and It (2017) producer Roy Lee onto the project.
After two years, Mob Entertainment gave a major update for the adaptation. Legendary Pictures would be stepping in to develop and produce the live-action film based on Poppy Playtime. Don Murphy and Susan Montford from Angry Films would also be producing alongside Mob Entertainment.
At the moment, there is no expected release date or any additional information for the live-action adaptation.
