Off Campus (2026) just pulled a Bridgerton (2020) on fans by officially switching book orders, but the organic way in which it works here is a strength that'll keep the show exciting. With a glamorous video featuring stars Belmont Cameli, Ella Bright, Stephen Kalyn, and Mika Abdalla, the official social media account released a "passing the torch" video, captioning it with "One couple made a deal. The next one is keeping score. From Garrett & Hannah to Dean & Allie — the Off Campus love story continues in Season 2."

Shifting book orders like this doesn't always stick the landing, nor does the narrative feel organic when we take a step back and look at the story as a whole. But in its debut season alone, Off Campus effectively cements itself as the kind of ensemble series where huge plot shifts can still work in favor of the character journeys, and that's something to admire.

Dean Di Laurentis Is Already Down Bad In 'Off Campus' Season 1

Dean looking at Allie in Off Campus Season 1

Yearning and groveling are a delicious part of romance novels that are necessary to keep us on the edge of our seats. We want it all. It's especially great when it comes from a character who's always had it easy and comes to a place where they're faced with their biggest challenge yet. Dean's never had to beg for a woman's attention, but throughout Off Campus Season 1, it's already clear that he's never been this down bad before. Cue the Taylor Swift song. He might not be crying at the gym, but he's certainly losing it, wanting Allie's attention more than he wants anything else.

And in this scenario, pushing him further into a tangled web would've been a bit redundant. (It also would've been strange to introduce Charlie. Evans' Hunter Davenport and not center Dean somehow, when the two have a complicated history.) Still, when Dean tells Allie that he didn't complete the assignment where she'd proposed that they both need to sleep with other people, he makes a point that he wants Allie

Allie is already in a place where she doesn't want to get back with Sean, so if the series had them backpedaling on both these things for two seasons, it could've gotten frustrating for the general audience. We'd have old-school teen drama on our hands, which isn't what we want when we say we're nostalgic for ensemble new adult shows.

In addition, because Off Campus has done such a solid job of establishing its ensemble and this core friend group, either book order would've worked. But really, Dean and Allie feel so fitting solely for the sake of their love story staying above the weeds. A large part of the appeal in book-to-screen adaptations is the expanded scenes we get to have, even when we lose out on internal thoughts. With Dean and Allie, much of this comes to the surface during their fireside conversation when Dean lets us see a completely different side of himself. He can be observant. He does think of things outside of sex.

Setting up the ultimate playboy as the man who's ready to give it all up for a woman is one of the most delicious tropes to read about, and they deliver it with exceptional ease in Off Campus. It doesn't feel like it's too soon because their earlier hookups ensure that we have all the right seeds planted to dive into an organic relationship already.

How Does 'Off Campus' Season 2 Change The Timeline?

Dean and Allie in Off Campus Season 1

The biggest question that arises from Dean and Allie's arc coming in early in Off Campus Season 2 is what happens to Dean afterward? He's the only senior from the core four, and while showrunner Louisa Levy has confirmed in multiple interviews that they aren't writing off characters after their season is over, it's easy to wonder how they can touch on his arc when he graduates. The answer is simple, yet it's the one I don't want to think about: Beau.

WARNING: The following section contains spoilers related to the books.

Dean's best friend, Beau Maxwell (Khobe Clarke), dies in a car crash in the books, making the grief he leaves behind a heartbreak that Dean naturally harbors for a long time. It's unclear how or when the series will kill off Beau—or, better yet, please don't—but if it happens somewhere in the middle of their season and Dean has to take time off from classes, that could ensure we still have him around next semester. The timeline here is likely the biggest worry fans might have.

As comforting as it is that we know he'll still be around as Allie's official boyfriend, we also want to see him play for Briar a bit longer before the other guys graduate as well. The show's ensemble appeal is one of its biggest draws on top of the romance, so keeping this intact is ultimately what'll make switching the book orders work organically. Plus, there's something deeply endearing about Allie and Hannah finding love after each other as best friends that adds an extra layer of coziness that was often present in older dramas.

There's still plenty that the TV show can change and switch up from the books when it returns for Season 2, but the groundwork that's been laid in Season 1 proves that the showrunners care about the characters and books in a way where they'll guarantee we get the best kind of adaptation for the small screen. They've already nailed Season 1.

A college-set romantic drama chronicling the unexpected love story between a music student and the university's star hockey player, exploring themes of love and the complexities of adulthood through deep friendships and enduring bonds.
