In the weeks since its release, 2026's Obsession has become the horror darling of the internet, with fans dissecting every aspect of the story that follows Baron Bailey (Michael Johnston), who uses a novelty occult item called the One Wish Willow to make his close friend Nikki Freeman (Inde Navarrette), who he has romantic feelings for, fall in love with him.

Baron, also known as Bear in the film, is initially happy with the results and jumps into a relationship with Nikki. But the side-effects of his wish slowly start to reveal themselves through Nikki's increasingly erratic and violent behavior that leaves Bear trapped in the consequences of his own wish. Desperate for things to go back to the way they were, he goes to his friend, Ian (Cooper Tomlinson), for help.

While it's pretty obvious that Bear is the bad guy because Nikki trusted their friendship and he manipulated her mind using dark magic, one theory suggests that Ian is the actual villain in Obsession. This is purely due to how Ian reacts when Bear gives him a One Wish Willow and begs him to fix his predicament with Nikki (he can't do it himself because of the Willow's rules).

Ian Is Guilty Of Negligence

Instead of wishing things back to normal, Ian asks for a million dollars. He is later shot by Nikki, who, by the end of the movie, has lost all sense of herself. This is something that Ian had pointed out to Bear by expressing concern about Nikki's behavioral changes early on in the story. But at the time, a disinterested Bear was still trying to make his twisted relationship with her work.

This is where negligence becomes a big part of Obsession. If Ian really ever cared about Nikki's well-being, he would have made the right choice when using the One Wish Willow, despite being skeptical of Bear's explanation of events. Instead, Ian chooses to do something completely self-serving. From that perspective, he goes from passive observer to the guy who refused to help.

Still, framing Ian as the true villain of Obsession ultimately depends on how much value is placed on his one missed opportunity to do the right thing. Meanwhile, Bear knew from the start that what he had done was wrong. And he was fine with it until the version of Nikki he got was not the version he wanted. So he is still the catalyst of the horror.

Blaming Ian Misses the Point Of Obsession Entirely

As interesting as the theory is, it also wrongly shifts attention away from the film's central idea about obsession. The reality is that no one forces Bear to make his wish. His decision is not made under duress, nor is it the result of manipulation. It comes from a place of insecurity, longing, and a desire to control how someone else feels.

The supernatural stuff simply amplifies what's already there and exposes Bear as a dangerous man. In that sense, Ian becomes a convenient figure to absorb some of the discomfort the story creates. It is easier to argue that someone else could have prevented the outcome than to accept that the damage was set in motion by something as ordinary as unspoken entitlement.

Bear knows what he wants. But instead of accepting the possibility of rejection, he overrides it. Even his reaction to Nikki's suffering reflects that same mindset. When she briefly regains clarity and begs him to end her life, he refuses because he is offended by what her request implies. The wish has already stripped her of agency and yet he still only thinks about himself.
