From 'FNAF 2' To 'Super Mario Galaxy': 10 Video Game Movie Sequels & TV Shows We Want Now

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is the next big video game adaptation coming to theaters, and I can’t wait for another round of scares courtesy of Freddy Fazbear. The film picks up after the events of Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023), which introduced Mike and his younger sister, Abby, as they end up in the crosshairs of a murderous mystery and a set of haunted animatronics from a closed pizza restaurant.

The first film was met with a mixed critical reaction but earned an impressive box office return, highlighting why Blumhouse is willing to push a December release for the sequel. For fans of atmospheric horror that doesn’t rely too heavily on blood and gore, such as in The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025), Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 should be an entertaining continuation of the jump-scare-heavy predecessor.

One of the most pleasant surprises of recent TV sci-fi has been Fallout (2024), which is now set to get a second season. Based on the apocalyptic wasteland RPG series of the same name, Fallout Season 2 will pick up from the first season’s ending, where former enemies turned reluctant traveling partners, Lucy and Ghoul, embark to find the former’s father.

An ideal blend of dark comedy, social satire, and intense action filtered through an unforgettable wasteland setting, Fallout finds that tricky tonal balance that heavy but entertaining sci-fi riffs like Murderbot (2025) and Westworld (2016) have strived for. Fallout Season 2 also seems to be teasing a larger global conflict, which could give the show a chance to push the visuals to the extreme.

Return to Silent Hill brings horror fans back to one of gaming’s most iconic settings. The third film based on the Silent Hill series, Return to Silent Hill moves away from the plot established by Silent Hill (2006) and the sequel, Silent Hill: Revelation (2012), by adapting the story of the otherwise standalone game, Silent Hill 2.

Focusing on a grieving husband who finds himself drawn to the town of Silent Hill by a mysterious letter, Return to Silent Hill has the benefit of adapting what is usually held up in gaming circles as one of the true timeless classics of the genre, with a very specific plot and heavy thematic tone that feels right at home alongside movies like Mulholland Drive (2001) and Jacob’s Ladder (1990). Never for the faint of heart but ideal for horror fans, Return to Silent Hill’s likely standalone nature should make it ideal for audiences who love a creepy atmosphere.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie looks like an absolute blast and an epic expansion of the cartoony success of the first movie. The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), the film brings back Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Bowser for a new adventure. The movie will take on a cosmic approach, with Captain Marvel (2019) star Brie Larson joining the cast as the space-faring Princess Rosalina and Benny Safdie from Good Time (2017) playing the film’s antagonist, Bowser Jr.

A colorful adventure that seems to be taking Illumination Animation’s visual elements far beyond what the Despicable Me movies have been able to achieve in the past, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie looks adorable from the teaser already released to the public and should hopefully continue Nintendo’s solid streak at the box office.

The second entry in an intended trilogy, Mortal Kombat 2 looks like a wild ride that perfectly understands the style and tone it should be adapting. The sequel to Mortal Kombat (2021), Mortal Kombat 2 depicts the titular tournament, pitting a handful of chosen fighters from Earth against the strongest warriors of the Netherrealm.

With Karl Urban closing out his career-defining role in The Boys (2019), it’s exciting to see the actor step back into the blockbuster space that he previously occupied in films like The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and Dredd (2012). As Johnny Cage, Urban looks to be the right amount of self-aware and action-capable to help bring the fighting game to new heights on the big screen, with plenty of big and bloody brawls.

The Last of Us (2023) became a massive hit for HBO when it took the trappings of the zombie genre and explored them from a more humanist perspective. Focusing on a world where a form of mushroom mutated over time and eventually adapted to take over human bodies, The Last of Us largely deals with the hard moral choices that the survivors have to make to survive while struggling to maintain their humanity.

After the shocking twists and turns of Season 2 pushed characters like Ellie to their emotional breaking point, audiences were left on a massive cliffhanger that seems poised to set up Season 3’s perspective flip. At times, feeling like a heartbreaking blend of The Walking Dead (2010) with the humanist sci-fi approach of Paradise (2025), The Last of Us’ upcoming third season will likely be the most tragic. 

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will carry on the Blue Blur’s surprising success at the box office. Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) was one of the last big theatrical releases before the COVID-19 lockdowns, bringing audiences out for one last family film experience and earning the movie a lot of love despite its mixed reception.

The more overtly weird (and entertaining) follow-ups, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), each improved upon the formula in their own ways. The fourth film in the series should take things in an even more action-packed direction, with the post-credits scene of Sonic 3 teasing the arrival of the Metal Sonic androids and the heroic Amy Rose. It also remains to be seen if Jim Carrey will return to the film, but fans are hopeful.

A Minecraft Movie 2 is currently in the early stages of development and looks to replicate the massive success of the first film, A Minecraft Movie (2025), which gave the largely open-world construction game a specific plot and cast of characters. It was a monumental hit for Warner Bros., highlighting the brand’s potential with Gen-Z and Gen-Alpha audiences.

While the exact cast and story of the sequel are currently unknown, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Jack Black reprise his role as Steve and serve as the film’s shepherd back to the big screen. A Minecraft Movie 2 could look to head more in the direction of something like The LEGO Movie (2014) and incorporate more self-aware commentary to the project—or it could rely on the same big humor that helped make the first one a hit.

While there haven’t been any announcements about the film in a while, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu 2 is still believed to be going strong for Nintendo. The sequel to Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019) will likely have to introduce some new elements or directions, given the self-contained nature of the first film’s story and its happy ending. This could see the sequel bring in a new celebrity to voice the titular electric mouse, given that Ryan Reynolds may be more focused on films like Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) follow-up.

It could also be a complete step away from the first film, which established a wide world of Pokémon that could set up all sorts of storylines. With Nintendo increasingly looking to expand its theatrical output, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this sequel actually pick up steam again or turn into a more direct adaptation of the game franchise.

Arcane (2021) was a critically acclaimed hit for Netflix and Riot Games, adapting the latter’s League of Legends into a beautifully animated techno-fantasy epic. The show concluded in 2024 with Season 2, closing out the plotline while leaving enough threads for a sequel story to pull.

While some elements of the world have been continued in League of Legends’ 2025 gameplay seasons, a new show is also reportedly in the works that could bring back certain characters while expanding the setting to other locations. A fascinating and compelling show that, like Castlevania (2017), highlights how well the animated medium can adapt video games, Arcane’s mysterious follow-up might be one of the most exciting prospects on this entire list.
