When it comes to how many Jane Austen adaptations there are or will be, the limit does not exist. As the author who paved the road for romance, complex character journeys, and family dynamics, no one explored organic and relatable journeys as effectively as Jane Austen. It doesn't matter what year it is, her characters continue to be relatable, and therefore, every adaptation is, and will forever be welcomed. We've got a new Pride and Prejudice (2026) coming and Sense and Sensibility (2026), too.

There aren't as many Sense and Sensibility adaptations or films inspired by the original as there are ones for Pride and Prejudice; still, there's a decent amount to get through if you want to prepare for the new release. From oldest to newest, here are all the versions, as well as where you can stream them on platforms such as Prime Video, BBC, and more.

For the longest time, Sense and Sensibility (1971) has lived in the BBC archives. As one of the first adaptations that we know of, it's not exactly exceptional by nature, but it's still compelling to watch and take note of how we've pivoted toward adapting things afterward. Like earlier versions of Pride and Prejudice, the effort is admirable, but there's sadly very little for us to hold onto.

Still, for this one especially, it's worth watching at least once. The time period and how screenplays were written make the text a bit stagnant, but the performances still manage to give us versions of the characters that we could remember and appreciate.

It wasn't until ten years after the 1971 Sense and Sensibility that we got Sense and Sensibility (1981), and for a mini-series, it did a relatively solid job of carefully adapting the text as best as possible. In a way, there is something revolutionary about it being the first to deliver accuracy in a way that showcases it's possible with adaptations.

The performances are incredible as well, and though this one might not become everyone's favorite, it can still be lovely and endearing to watch and take note of the differences that can be achieved in a span of ten years. More than anything, the mini-series approach makes it a fun little treat that can extend the movie time.

The year 1995 is a special one for Jane Austen fans. With both Pride and Prejudice (1995) and the single best adaptation of Sense and Sensibility (1995), we really had it all. It's hard to think that any version could ever top this adaptation, and it's entirely because of the cast. Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, and every other major player are each perfect in their respective roles, and the production quality is stunning.

When you think about Austen adaptations, it's hard not to count this one as one of its jewels. There's a reason we didn't have many afterward, because how exactly do you top something that's perfect? From the costumes to the music and every bit of yearning present in each frame, it's not only an A+ adaptation, but it's one of the best period pieces of all time and an example of how to deliver an instant classic.

The early aughts gave us some of the best Austen adaptations like Northanger Abbey (2007), Persuasion (2007), Emma (2009), and, of course, Sense and Sensibility (2008). Of all the mini-series, this one isn't to be missed. It manages to embody the heart of Austen gorgeously, and the casting is incredible, too.

This one does a brilliant job of adapting the text and allowing the character journeys to remain center stage while the romance and sisterhood shine in the background. If you only watch one limited series, let it be the 2008 version for all that it accomplishes in feeling both fresh and surprisingly familiar at the same time. It's also gorgeously shot in a manner that feels especially comforting.

Hallmark adaptations are always a hit or miss, but Sense & Sensibility is a surprisingly stunning must-watch. Part of its Hallmark Mahogany lineup, the network's decision to give us a more inclusive version is the kind of perfect decision that feels necessary. Bridgerton (2020) rightfully took the world by storm with its more inclusive period drama casting, and Hallmark following suit in this way is admirable.

And while die-hard fans might not love the tonal shift in writing, it's still a gorgeous feature to check out for how it honors Austen's text. We also get lovely performances from Deborah Ayorinde, Bethany Antonia, Dan Jeannotte, and the whole cast, which makes it even more riveting and thoroughly worth adding to the list of adaptations.

Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor and George MacKay as Edward? Say less. I'm so seated, the theater employees are begging me to leave. We didn't need another Sense and Sensibility adaptation, but with an incredible cast like this and directing from Georgia Oakley, I've got such a good feeling about it becoming a new favorite. The vibes seem to feel like Joe Wright's Pride and Prejudice (2005), and we all know that's rightfully a fan favorite.

This newest one will be riveting to also compare to others and see how they hold up with what we've had in the past. The theatrical release from Focus Features is also a worthy choice because seeing these characters and this story on the big screen will hit twice as hard.
