Crystal Lake is going back to the beginning of Friday the 13th. The Peacock series stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees (Jason's mother) and takes place before the events of the original 1980 movie. The story follows a grief-stricken Pamela who is struggling to accept what happened to her son, while hoping that he could somehow still be alive.

At the same time, a police chief and investigative journalist start uncovering dark secrets about Crystal Lake. And as they get closer to the truth, Pamela becomes desperate to keep those secrets hidden, which leads her to deadly actions. Although the premise suggests that Jason is already dead when the series begins, Callum Vinson has been cast as a young version of the character.

Now that we know Jason will appear in the 2026 prequel series, the bigger question is what he will actually be doing in the story. The original Friday the 13th gives the show several possibilities because Jason does not spend the first movie stalking and killing anyone. Instead, he appears in Pamela's memories and later shows up during a nightmare experienced by Alice Hardy (Adrienne King).

Pamela is the killer in the first movie, and she blames the camp counselors for allowing Jason to drown when he was a child. Her grief becomes the reason she targets the people running Camp Crystal Lake. So the simplest way for Jason to appear in Crystal Lake is through flashbacks that detail his life with his mom before she became the killer audiences know.

Jason’s Childhood Could Explain Pamela’s Obsession

The first Friday the 13th gives viewers very little information about Jason before his death. But Crystal Lake can change that instead of immediately treating him as a future killer. If the series introduces Jason as a happy kid who is close to his mother, that would give Pamela a much stronger reason to want to avenge his untimely death.

In the original movie, Pamela talks about Jason as if his death happened yesterday. What could make that scene more meaningful is if we get to see how Pamela and Jason interacted. If he is shown as a child who needed more attention than other kids, his mom going on a killing spree when he doesn't get that will make a lot more sense (in a twisted sort of way).

Crystal Lake can also explore whether Pamela's need to protect her son was actually an obsession. Since Pamela never mentions a husband or Jason's father when talking about her son in the first movie, the series has room to develop this theory. Although later movies revealed Jason's father as Elias Voorhees, he was never an established part of Pamela and Jason's story in the original film.

If Pamela is presented as a loving mother who is forced to take on all the responsibilities that come with raising a child alone, when Jason's death removes him from her life, she will be left with nothing except the belief that someone should have protected him when she was not there. And that could be the point where Pamela's natural protectiveness turns into revenge.

Jason Could Be More Than A Memory To Pamela

There is another possibility that could give Jason a much creepier role in Crystal Lake. Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) reveals that Jason survived the drowning and had been living in the woods around Crystal Lake, eventually targeting people who return. The movie even shows that he preserved a connection to his mother by keeping her severed head on an altar in his cabin.

If Crystal Lake chooses to reveal that he survived, Jason wouldn't just be the reason for Pamela's murders. He could become the thing that pushes her further into them. There is some precedent for this kind of relationship in Psycho (1960) and Bates Motel (2013). Norman Bates becomes so attached to his mother that he eventually creates an alternate version of her in his mind after her death.

Crystal Lake could explore that idea in reverse. Believing that her son is dead, Pamela could be acting to protect his memory while Jason is secretly watching. He could even encourage the murders, giving his mom a reason to believe her actions are justified. That would be a cool way to showcase the beginning of the relationship that eventually makes Jason and Pamela inseparable parts of the same legend.
