Pickleball probably wasn't a sport most people expected Hollywood to build a comedy around. Yet that's exactly what The Dink does. The 2026 film follows former tennis prodigy Dustin "The Hammer" Boyd (Jake Johnson), whose career never recovered after a wrist injury. Years later, he's still working at his father's tennis club when another injury forces him to give pickleball a chance.

Years before The Dink, another comedy took the same approach with an even less likely sport. Released in 2020, Golden Arm revolves around competitive arm wrestling and commits completely to its world. Director Maureen Bharoocha treats the competition with the same sincerity that other sports movies reserve for football fields or boxing rings.

And yet, even with a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes it's likely you never got to see this (ahem) over-the-top movie. Luckily, thanks to JustWatch TV, you can now watch it for free! Let us tell you why you should.

What Is 'Golden Arm?' The Sports Comedy You Probably Missed

Melanie training with Big Sexy in Golden Arm

Golden Arm never really tries to convince you to become an arm wrestling fan. Instead, it uses the sport to tell the story of Melanie (Mary Holland), a struggling baker whose life isn't going according to plan. After her best friend Danny (Betsy Sodaro) suffers an injury that takes her out of competition, she discovers Melanie has a natural gift for arm wrestling.

Danny eventually persuades Melanie to enter the National Ladies Arm Wrestling Championship. What starts as a sports comedy slowly turns into a story about friendship and finding something you're unexpectedly good at. Even though the movie is built around a competition that exists outside mainstream sports, it doesn't mind that viewers don't follow the professional leagues.

Golden Arm relies on its characters to keep people invested in the story. If the people are entertaining enough, it doesn't really matter what sport they're playing. Melanie is easy to root for, Danny is the kind of friend who barrels into every situation without thinking twice, and the oddball competitors they meet along the way give the film plenty of personality.

How COVID Robbed The World Of 'Golden Arm's' Greatness

Through no fault of its own, Golden Arm never really stood a chance at becoming a hit. The comedy was originally supposed to premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2020, an event known for helping smaller independent films find an audience. But the festival was canceled as the COVID-19 pandemic brought the entertainment industry to a standstill.

So the release of Golden Arm was put on pause until April 2021, during a very different moment for the film industry. Many theaters were still operating under restrictions, while audiences had become accustomed to watching new releases at home through popular streaming platforms or premium video-on-demand.

Smaller independent comedies were particularly hard hit, with far fewer opportunities to build momentum than they would have had just a year earlier. It's impossible to know whether Golden Arm would have become the cult favorite Bharoocha hoped it would be. But it certainly deserved the chance. Even now, it feels like the sort of comedy that would have benefited from bigger release hype.

'Golden Arm's' Best Coach Was a Real 15-Time World Champion (And A 3X Emmy Nominee)

Along with Holland and Sodaro, Golden Arm also features Dot-Marie Jones as Big Sexy, who most people will recognize from the 2009 series, Glee, where she earned three Primetime Emmy nominations for playing Coach Beiste. Long before her acting career took off, though, Jones had already made a name for herself in competitive arm wrestling and other sports.

Jones won her first World Arm Wrestling Championship when she was just 19 years old. She then went on to win another 14 titles, making her one of the sport's most accomplished competitors. She was also an elite shot put athlete, earning All-America honors at California State University, Fresno, and even qualifying for the 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials.

That extensive sporting background made Jones the perfect person to play Big Sexy, the legendary arm wrestler who takes Melanie under her wing. Jones also personally taught Holland and Sodaro proper arm wrestling technique so the matches would look convincing on screen. The filmmakers also researched the sport extensively, even writing the very real "arm-break position" into the script.

'Golden Arm' Secretly Assembled One of the Best Comedy Casts of the 2020s

Supporting cast in a match in Golden Arm

One of the coolest things about Golden Arm is just how many familiar faces it managed to gather before several of them became even bigger stars. Holland was already a favorite among comedy fans thanks to projects like Happiest Season (2020). But she's only become more recognizable since then, with a recurring role in Netflix's 2026 adaptation of Little House on the Prairie.

Sodaro became one of television's most reliable scene-stealers with her recurring role on Ghosts (2021) while also lending her unmistakable voice to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022). The supporting cast has also done well, with Ron Funches appearing in the 2022 Apple TV series Loot and the 2024 animated film Inside Out 2. Eugene Cordero joined Star Trek: Lower Decks in 2020 and Loki in 2021.

How 'Golden Arm' Predicted Arm Wrestling's 2026 Viral Boom

When Golden Arm was released, competitive arm wrestling still felt like one of those sports most people only stumbled across by accident. Unless you were already following it, there was a good chance you'd never watched a professional match. But in 2026, arm wrestling has found a much bigger audience thanks to clips of dramatic finishes spreading across social media.

Clubs have also reported seeing newcomers walk through the door after discovering arm wrestling online, showing just how much of an effect those viral videos have had. That's why Golden Arm's story feels current. It always understood that professional arm wrestling features genuine athleticism and plenty of drama. It simply needed more people to notice that it existed.
