'House Of The Dragon' Season 3 Family Tree: Targaryens, Velaryons & Hightowers, Explained

The House of the Dragon (2022) characters would be a hit on The Jerry Springer Show (1991). Secrets, betrayals, and feuds only add to the drama created by all the incest. With brothers marrying sisters, and uncles betrothing nieces, the Targaryens are the messiest family in Westeros. Toss in the Velaryons and Hightowers, and things just get even more complicated.

The Targaryens 

The Targaryen family has been thriving in Dragonstone and beyond as the Lords of the Seven Kingdoms well before House of the Dragon's timeline, and it makes sense. No one wants to mess with the people who wield dragons like weapons. However, in Season 3, the Targaryens are divided by civil war. Season 3 sees Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) as the king, but his brother, Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), is the Prince Regent. 

On the other side of the battle is Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy), Aegon's half-sister, and the official heir of her father's kingdom. Rhaenyra complicates the family tree further, with children from her first husband, Laenor Velaryon (John Macmillan), although they're the confirmed bastards of Harwin Strong (Ryan Corr), and her second husband and uncle, Daemon (Matt Smith).

Daemon Targaryen

• Daemon Targaryen married Laena Velaryon (deceased)

• Daemon is Viserys' brother, making him Rhaenyra's uncle

Rhaenyra Targaryen

• Rhaenyra Targaryen married Laenor Velaryon (deceased)

  • 3 Children (officially fathered by Harwin Strong): Jacaerys Velaryon (deceased), Lucerys Velaryon (deceased), and Joffrey Velaryon

The Velaryons

As evident by the tree above, the Velaryons have significant overlap with the Targaryans. The relationship between the two families extends further back than House of the Dragon, but the focus of the show is Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) and Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best). 

While their marriage (now over because of the war) continues to highlight the ongoing bond between the two families, Rhaenys already has Velaryon blood, thanks to the original union between Aenys Targaryen and Alyssa Velaryon around 22 AC.

Corlys Velaryon

• Corlys Velaryon married Rhaenys Targaryan (deceased)

  • 2 Children: Laenor Velaryon (deceased) and Laena Velaryon (deceased)

  • 2 Children: Alyn and Addam

The Hightowers

The Hightowers are one of the oldest houses in Westeros. However, their role in House of the Dragon is primarily limited to Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans). Alicent's brother and Otto's son, Ser Gwayne Hightower, also makes an appearance in the series in Seasons 1 and 2. 

That said, House of the Dragon also introduces Ormund Hightower (James Norton), who is Alicent's first cousin and Otto's nephew. With his father, Hobert Hightower (Steffan Rhodri), dead, Ormund is the new Lord of Oldtown and a big player in the Greens' side of the conflict.
