Frozen III (2027) is still over a year away, with the single teaser released for the film hinting at a powerful new enemy in the mix. Following the massive success of Frozen (2013) and the subsequent sequel, Frozen III is setting up a story that will be seemingly continue in a fourth film in the franchise. Fans who attended D23 2026 got the chance to check out a first taste of the film with a small teaser.

That footage included the introduction of a mysterious figure who shares Elsa’s powers but comes to the screen with an ominous design and sharper control of her power. It all presents some interesting possibilities about the shape of the upcoming film. Leaks of the teaser have given fans plenty to look through, so here’s what we can tell so far about Frozen III’s mysterious antagonist.

What Can The ‘Frozen III’ Villain Do? 

The trailer for Frozen III was revealed at D23 2026 and teases that the new film will introduce someone else with similar powers to Elsa. The teaser doesn’t reveal much about her beyond her abilities, which seem like a grim reflection of Elsa’s abilities. The mysterious woman is seen controlling a butterfly made of ice, suggesting she has the same power as Elsa to imbue her creations with life. However, the butterfly is far different from the likes of Olaf, with no discernible personality of its own before being snuffed out by the magic user.

Those butterflies seem to be a motif for the villain, with a swarm of them around her functioning as a cape and a sign of her power. The razor-sharp qualities of the butterflies only underscore their dangerous potential, seemingly cutting Elsa’s cheek while flying by. The villain seems to have a refined control of her powers, with a clear, spiky precision that Elsa’s more naturalistic and emotional constructs lack. It’s an obvious way to let Elsa have a direct antagonist without having their similar powers be too close to one another.

What Is The ‘Frozen III’ Villain After? 

It’s currently unclear who the Frozen III villain is, let alone what they’re after. However, the teaser does highlight her immediately confrontational nature towards the sisters, especially because even just approaching the pair leads to Elsa shooting an ice blast towards her. The official synopsis for the film that's been released so far suggests that Anna and Elsa will be embarking on a new journey and will "welcome a mysterious new member" to their family, according to Hollywood Handle. This figure is seemingly set to cause conflict between the sisters, according to an interview that Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel gave to Entertainment Weekly.

It’s possible then that this is the new family member, hailing from the mystical heritage of the family that played a major role in the backstory for Frozen II (2019). She could be a long-lost aunt to the sisters, who is looking for her missing sister. She could have ventured away from the  Northuldra people much as her sister eventually would, heading off into the wilds to hone her abilities rather than how Queen Iduna went to live in Arendelle. Some fans even speculate that she’s actually Elsa’s birth mother, explaining why she’s been looking for them. Until we see more of the film, her true motivations and origins remain a mystery.

Who Plays The Villain In ‘Frozen III’?

The biggest question mark right now for the film is the identity of the actress playing this mysterious new character. Online communities like Reddit have been debating the identity of the actress, especially because no formal additions to the cast have been announced. The leading theory is that it is Sarah Stiles, who has previously worked with Robert Lopez (Frozen’s songwriter) on projects like Avenue Q. The name ‘Eden Espinosa’ has also been tossed around, especially after the actress reposted an Instagram post hinting she was in the film. Some fans believe other contenders include Susan Sarandon, Kristin Schaal, Jenny Slate, or Kat Dennings. 

There's also a chance that the voice-over could be Robert Lopez’s wife and Frozen songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez providing a temporary voice for the trailer, and that the actual actress playing the character hasn't been revealed or even cast yet. Other fans believe that it could be Idina Menzel and that the character is a literal twisted reflection of Elsa, finally paying off the original ideas for the film that would have made Elsa more of an overt villain. We likely won’t know for sure until a formal official trailer is released for the film. However, the tease at D23 was enough to get fans on the edge of their seats, trying to uncover the truth.
