'Evil Dead Burn' Breaks A Decades Old Series Trend (And No One Noticed)
Evil Dead Burn (2026) is the latest entry in the decades-old horror franchise. Whether audiences love it or hate it, the one certain thing is that it's actively expanding on the lore. One way this is done is by not even featuring a Necronomicon, the most important thing in the entire Evil Dead franchise.
By breaking such a hard and fast rule that has followed the series for so long, there has to be a good reason, and Evil Dead Burn gives a solid one. But the question of how this could impact the series going forward remains to be seen.
'Evil Dead Burn' Avoiding The Necronomicon Changes The Rules
Everything since The Evil Dead (1981), in terms of story and stakes, relies heavily on the Necronomicon. Each film revolves around it in some way, and before Evil Dead Burn, Army of Darkness (1992) was the only movie where reading the book wasn't needed.
Even still, while the book wasn't read, it was still in the movie. In the case of Evil Dead Burn, the book wasn't there at all. There were multiple mentions, however, as well as the lore behind it and how it tied to the Circle of Wise Men. But what it does instead is serve as a continuation of Evil Dead Rise (2023) and prove the Evil never truly died.
Once Evil is unleashed, it can be much harder to put it under wraps than in other films. But there's also the fact that there was so much more going on beyond people simply reading from the Book of the Dead. This is also what makes Evil Dead Burn such a unique entry in the franchise.
How Does The Evil Enter 'Evil Dead Burn?'
Every Evil Dead film, except Army of Darkness, has had someone read the words of the Necronomicon. Whether it's spoken or from a recording, there's always been a catalyst for the chaos to start. But Evil Dead Burn is the first one in the series, with Evil Dead in the title, to have the Evil already be there and appear for different reasons than murder.
The evil force that appears in the film is tied directly to the book that was read in Evil Dead Rise. If anything, the Deadite form of Jessica from Evil Dead Rise is the closest we have had to someone reading the words. But being that she was a demon, it didn't really count. Instead, the Deadites are there to look for the Kandarian Dagger, simply taking advantage of the fact that no one has stopped them yet.
That said, we do get a fun moment where the words of the book are almost ready until Alice stops reading at the third word. But no matter what, the Evil was already there, making its way to the Price house to find the dagger, and the words never had to be uttered again.
'Evil Dead Burn' Opens More Doors For 'Evil Dead'
Evil Dead Burn is a lore film through and through, and that works because, for as much as we know about the franchise, we know very little about the world and how it relates to the Necronomicon. Thankfully, Evil Dead Burn does a great job of giving us a much larger piece to chew on and understand.
Not having a Book of the Dead reveals to us that so long as the Evil is out there, it can attack and move wherever it needs. In this case, they wanted the Kandarian Dagger and waited years to make their move. But now we know that even if there are people dangerously close to the world of the book and the dagger, there’s a chance that evil spirits could rise and hunt them down.
Ash Williams showed this the minute he read from the book. Then, he was stalked across the country by the Evil and even time and space. But Evil Dead Burn showed that while there are some loose rules in the series, you don’t always need the Book of the Dead to unleash Hell, which makes Evil Dead Wrath (2028) all the more intriguing, as it could do the same.
