2016 - Spider-Man’s Webbing
In 2016, Holland was promoting his very first MCU solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he almost revealed that the film would see Spider-Man use multiple forms of webbing. While discussing his wrist flick for shooting webs, Holland told the interviewer, “We’re working on different ways of doing it, for different types of webs, you see. There’s not just one–oh, I might’ve given something away there.”
Although Holland tried to catch himself, most viewers realized what he was saying. At the time, Spider-Man’s ability to shoot multiple types of webbing in the MCU was big news and one of Holland’s earliest spoilers.
2016 - ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Major Action Sequence
In late 2016, Holland jumped on Facebook Live to talk to his fans about Spider-Man: Homecoming. When asked about stunts for the movie, Holland discussed one scene his stunt double had done, explaining, “There were a few things that I couldn’t do. There was one time where they dangled, my poor stunt double, under a helicopter and dunked him in a lake” (via CinemaBlend).
Holland realized too late that he’d just dropped a spoiler for a major Spider-Man: Homecoming action sequence where Vulture (Michael Keaton) drops Spider-Man into the lake. Regret filled his face as he asked, “This is live, isn’t it?”
2017 - Spider-Man’s MCU Future
During press for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Holland accidentally confirmed the film’s sequels long before the MCU had time to announce them officially. In an interview with the French outlet, AlloCiné, he remarked, “There is still a lot of room for Peter Parker and Spider-Man, especially to grow in the next two movies” (via TheWrap).
At the time, Spider-Man: Homecoming hadn’t even premiered, and the MCU was marketing the film as a standalone. Naturally, the interviewer asked if he had just released breaking news, at which point he realized his error, stating, “Sorry, Marvel. Whoops.” After his initial hesitation, he decided just to keep going, confirming there would be a second and third Spider-Man movie, though it wouldn’t necessarily be “Homecoming 2 and 3.”
2017 - ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Poster
By 2017, Marvel was already making use of Holland’s spoiler habits, allowing him to “spoil” the Avengers: Infinity War (2018) official poster. Holland jumped on Instagram Live to unbox a mysterious package from Mark Ruffalo for his fans. Upon opening it, he pulled out a sheet of paper, turning it around to reveal the movie’s first official poster.
He then pulled out a note Ruffalo had written, on the back of which was a warning about spoilers. Holland’s face falls as he flips the note around and sees the warning too late. It was obviously a pre-planned PR stunt and marks one of Holland’s funniest “spoilers.”
2018 - ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Plot Point
While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Holland revealed that Marvel had begun using fake scripts to prevent spoilers. Unfortunately, the move backfired when Holland blurted out something he thought was part of a fake script for Avengers: Infinity War, but was part of the legit script. He says, “I was reading what I thought was the fake script because it was, like, Spider-Man’s in space. So I didn’t finish it, but I found it was real.”
His co-star, Pom Klementieff, does a double-take when he lets the spoiler out. However, it takes him quite a bit of time to realize he just spoiled a major plot point in Avengers: Infinity War, where Parker travels to space to save Doctor Strange, days before the movie’s premiere.
2018 - Spider-Man’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Fate
In 2018, Holland surprised fans at the first public showing of Avengers: Infinity War in a Los Angeles theater. As he walked into the theater, he shouted, “I’m alive” (via Business Insider). Holland believed that the audience had just seen Avengers: Infinity War and cheekily reassured them that he was alive despite his character’s disappearance during the Blip.
In response to the mixed reaction to his statement, he asks, “Did you guys already see the film, or are you just about to watch it?” It turns out the theater was just about to watch it, and shouts instantly broke out as fans realized he spoiled Parker’s “death.”
2026 - Someone Remembers Spider-Man is Peter Parker
Ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s release, Holland and Zendaya sat down for an interview with IGN. When questioned about the issue of everyone forgetting Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Holland dropped a bombshell by suggesting one person remembers him. He states, “I think no one remembers that I’m Spider-Man, except for one person. No one remembers that Spider-Man is Peter Parker, apart from one person.”
Zendaya tries to cut him off, suggesting he may have revealed something big. The mere suggestion that Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) wasn’t absolute and may include an exception is news to fans.
2026 - MJ and Ned’s Spider-Man Memories
In the same interview with IGN in which he confirmed that someone remembers Parker’s alter ego, Holland clarified how MJ’s (Zendaya) and Ned’s (Jacob Batalon) memories work regarding Spider-Man. Holland explained, “I think we landed on the idea that they remember Spider-Man. They remember their interactions with him. They just don’t remember who he is.” He continued, revealing that part of the plot focuses on Ned searching for Spider-Man’s identity so he can thank him.
Not only did he reveal a previously unknown plot point, but he also confirmed that MJ and Ned remember their interactions and emotions surrounding Spider-Man, even though they don’t remember his true identity.
How Marvel Embraced Spoiler-Man
Holland has had quite a number of incidents involving the leaking and spoiling of confidential Marvel secrets. For a short time, he appeared to be the MCU’s biggest PR nightmare. After all, the franchise has tried to set itself apart by promoting secrecy and discouraging spoilers for major movies like Avengers: Endgame (2019). Initially, it seems the MCU did try to fix Holland’s penchant for spilling the tea through the fake scripts debacle and pairing him with someone like Benedict Cumberbatch, who would stop him from going into spoiler territory.
