John Steinbeck is the Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize-winning author behind The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men. The Grapes of Wrath is easily his most famous novel, often hailed by critics as the quintessential “American Novel” for its searingly beautiful, intimate portrait of a family’s struggle to start a new life amid the Great Depression and Dust Bowl. As beloved as the novel is, though, it actually wasn’t the book Steinbeck considered his “magnum opus.”

Instead, the sprawling family saga East of Eden was the book the author believed best captured everything he knew about the craft of writing. The epic saga follows the intertwined lives of the Trask and Hamilton families, woven together with allusions to the Biblical tale of Cain and Abel. In the saga, Steinbeck paints a portrait not just of family, but of fallen humanity as he probes one’s capacity for good vs. evil. If you’re intrigued by Steinbeck’s masterpiece, use our guide to find where to watch every adaptation of East of Eden, including Netflix’s latest take on the saga.

East of Eden

1955

The first film adaptation of Steinbeck’s book arrived just three years after its publication. East of Eden (1955) adapts the last quarter of Steinbeck’s novel, focusing on the adult lives of brothers Caleb (James Dean) and Aron Trask (Richard Davalos). Family tensions flare as Caleb, the wayward son, begins unveiling dark family secrets in his desperation to gain his father’s approval.

East of Eden is only a partial adaptation, meaning it may not appeal to viewers seeking the full history and context of the Trask and Hamilton families. Even so, it’s a powerful adaptation and an excellent drama, made all the more potent by Dean’s complex and moving performance as Caleb. A contemporary retelling of the tale of Cain and Abel, it’s a powerful story akin to Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Ordinary People (1980) in its ability to so perfectly capture the complexities of sibling and parent relationships amid dysfunction.

East of Eden

1981

East of Eden (1981) is a three-part miniseries adaptation of Steinbeck’s novel. It’s an excellent watch if you’re looking for a more faithful and comprehensive adaptation than the 1955 movie, as it spans the full story rather than just the last quarter. The series takes viewers from the beginning of Adam Trask’s (Timothy Bottoms) story as a rebellious young man in the post-Civil War era to the outbreak of World War II when he has two adult sons of his own, Aron (Hart Bochner) and Cal (Sam Bottoms).

East of Eden plays out much like the novel. At 8 hours in length, it's a behemoth of a show to tackle and can feel slow at times, but it's ultimately worth it. The intricate detail and deep character studies keep the show engaging and tense. Meanwhile, Jane Seymour offers one of her greatest and most chilling performances as the evil, manipulative Cathy Ames. Rectifying some of the movie's shortcomings with less condensed storytelling, East of Eden is a must-see for true Steinbeck fans.

2026

East of Eden (2026) is a miniseries that offers Netflix’s spin on Steinbeck’s story. While the 1955 movie focuses mostly on Cal and Aron, and the 1981 miniseries focuses on Adam, Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames takes the spotlight in the Netflix series. Like the 1981 miniseries, it’s also a more faithful adaptation, including the critical character Lee (Hoon Lee) and exploring the relationship between Adam Trask (Christopher Abbott) and his brother Charles (Mike Faist).

East of Eden is a beautiful, sprawling epic that does justice to the scope of Steinbeck’s work, balancing faithfulness with additional analysis and interpretation. It especially does an excellent job of delving deeper into who Ames truly is, rather than reducing her to the Satan archetype. If you loved The Sense of an Ending (2017) and Strange Circus (2005) and are looking for another powerful, dark, heartbreaking family saga, East of Eden is for you.
