Peacock's 'Crystal Lake' Is Already Tackling A Major 'Friday The 13th' Mystery
Friday the 13th (1980) introduced a world that started as a clever slasher mystery where the killer, Pamela Voorhees, took us by surprise. But it has since passed the torch to her son, Jason, as the masked killer we know and love. But Peacock's upcoming Crystal Lake (2026) is tackling a major mystery in the lore.
When it comes to continuity, it's best not to look too deeply into the Friday the 13th timeline. Over the years, we have seen various ideas introduced, such as Jason Voorhees being a Deadite. But Crystal Lake's trailer already confirms it's exploring a major mystery in the franchise: Jason's actual fate.
Jason's Fate Remains A Huge Mystery In 'Friday the 13th'
Seeing Pamela Voorhees as the killer in Friday the 13th, when we believed it might have been Jason the whole time, was a major surprise. Originally, the idea was for the series to be an anthology series until the success of the original meant they had to continue the Voorhees story.
But technically, the original film drove home the idea that Jason was, in fact, dead, and the jump scare at the end of the film was simply a dream sequence. As a result, having Jason back in the sequel was a bit of a shock.
Ultimately, we never get a clear explanation of how Jason survived, if Pamela knew, or if Jason only found her corpse and made a shrine of it after her death. Realistically, we don't know how Jason not only survived without supervision but was also incredibly burly and strong. It's become a major mystery in the slasher genre and one that started a long trend of continuity issues with the franchise.
'Crystal Lake' Shows That Jason Did Drown
Starring Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, Crystal Lake serves as a prequel to the series, exploring Pamela's life after the fateful day that Jason drowned. In the trailer, she's in the lake looking for her son but unable to, and how she's coped since.
We know that she's also the culprit in a massacre in 1958, not long after Jason's death, and this show may explore that. But one thing we know for sure is that Jason isn't in the trailer and likely isn't in the show. If that's the case, then it proves one thing: Jason Voorhees drowned in that lake.
The trailer teases many murders that we can easily assume are tied to Pamela's 1958 massacre, but it also raises the question: If Jason drowned, how did the rest of the series happen? We've seen various versions of the story, with Pamela dabbling in dark magic or evil forces to bring her son back from the dead, but in the case of Crystal Lake, the story seems largely grounded.
What we can benefit from not focusing on Jason is that we can finally understand who Pamela was as a person and her descent into madness that turned her into a focused killer. In doing so, we may learn that Jason's death was exaggerated.
There's Always A Chance that 'Crystal Lake' Has More Surprises
Unfortunately, Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) only stated that, per the legend of Crystal Lake, Jason survived the drowning. Since then, that was all we got in the movies as to why the son of Pamela Voorhees is still kicking. But for as much as the Crystal Lake trailer seemed to confirm Jason died, there's still a chance that it could have its cake and eat it too.
Jason clearly survived, or there wouldn't be a slasher series, and the trailer shows that that is not the case. But that doesn't mean he's "technically" gone. Crystal Lake Season 1 could show Pamela's massacre in 1958 on her own, thinking her son is dead. But by the end, or maybe even early on, there's a chance she finds her son alive and well and cares for him.
Jason has to live because there wouldn't be a series without him. But the fact of the matter is, we have to reach both conclusions of his death and survival in a way that makes complete sense. In this case, taking the time with a show to both address and answer these mysteries is the best way to do it, and it's only a matter of time before the long-overdue return to Camp Crystal Lake happens again.
