With 27 seasons under its belt and a 28th season about to premiere in October 2026, Law & Order: SVU (1999) has done every story imaginable. And with that many episodes, which would take you about 17 days and 18 hours to watch, every celebrity imaginable has been on SVU. Whether it's A-listers, iconic comedians, sports champions, or Oscar winners, it almost seems like a right of passage to one time have guest-starred on Law & Order: SVU.

As we mentioned earlier, there are 27 seasons of this show. And if you’re contemplating starting Law & Order: SVU, and don’t mind spoilers, I’m going to go through nine surprising celebrities you might not have known were on the show, the role they played, and a little background on them.

Note: Some of the topics discussed in this post can be triggering. There are discussions pertaining to rape, kidnappings, and assaults.

Robin Williams

When it comes to celebrities who have guest starred on Law & Order: SVU, Robin Williams' appearance is probably the most iconic. He played Merritt Rook, an anti-authoritarian vigilante who abducted the then Detective Olivia Benson in Season 9, Episode 17, “Authority.” And his character was a manipulative villain who could shift from charming to terrifying at the drop of a dime.

This role proves that the late comedian could really do anything. He could do fantasy in Hook (1991), a comedy like Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), or a coming-of-age drama like Good Will Hunting (1997). And he could also step onto the small screen for SVU’s 200th episode and bring to life a villainous character that is talked about to this day.

Serena Williams

Serena Williams is one of the greatest tennis players in history with 23 Grand Slam singles titles and four Olympic gold medals. And one of her first TV guest appearances was in Law & Order: SVU Season 5 ,Episode 12, “Brotherhood.” In it she played a small part as Chloe Spiers, a college student who reveals she was tricked into getting drunk and performing a strip tease.

Other surprising guest appearances for Williams include playing a distressed mother trying to find her kids after a plane crash in ER (1994) and also a lawyer in Drop Dead Diva (2009). She’s also done some guest voice acting, including playing Ming in Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005) and Yoga Yvette in PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (2023).

Amanda Seyfried

Before she was an Oscar nominated actress, Amanda Seyfried guest starred in Season 6, Episode 5, “Outcry.” She played Tandi McCain, a rape victim who changed her story multiple times. The twists led to a media frenzy. And when the truth finally came out, it was used against her, leading to a powerful yet heartbreaking performance by Seyfried on the stand.

A little more background on Seyfried, she got that Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Mank (2020). She played Marion Davies, a star from the 1930s. And since her SVU appearance she has risen to stardom in movies like Mamma Mia! (2008), Les Misérables (2012), and The Housemaid (2025). As for Mean Girls (2004), she filmed that right before her SVU appearance.

Zoe Saldaña

Before Zoe Saldaña was an Oscar winner for Emilia Pérez (2024), starred in the Avatar (2009) movies, or had her own production company, her first credit ever was on Law & Order (1990) Season 9, Episode 24, “Refuge: Part 2.” In that episode, she played Belinca, and a couple years later, she would make an appearance on SVU as Gabrielle Vega in Season 5, Episode 21, “Criminal.”

In the episode, she was a law student and the daughter of Javier Vega, a man imprisoned for the murder of a young woman when he was 19. When he found out about Gabrielle he got clean and became a professor after his release. And when a woman was killed at his university, Javier was suspected of the murder. The twist at the end saw James McDaniel, who played Javier, give an emotional performance that matched Saldaña’s.

Adam Driver

Before his breakout role on Girls (2012) as Adam Sackler, Adam Driver guest starred on SVU as Jason Roberts. He was an odd and delusional stalker of actress Meghan Weller, who was raped during a theater interactive show. He was brought in for questioning as a possible suspect. And that’s when he revealed a disturbing amount of cameras monitoring Weller, proving he wasn’t the one who attacked her.

Like other actors on this list of celebrities you won’t believe starred on Law & Order: SVU, Driver also made an appearance in another property in the franchise. On Law & Order, he made a guest appearance in Season 20, Episode 15, “Brilliant Disguise” as Robby Vickery.

Ty Burrell

As someone in the middle of a Modern Family (2009) rewatch, Ty Burrell’s appearance on Law & Order: SVU is probably the hardest character switch-up to handle. He’s such a golden retriever as Phil Dunphy in Modern Family. But in SVU Season 3, Episode 15, “Execution” he plays a rigid District Attorney who is uncompromising. His character gets brought in when ADA Alexandra Cabot needs a favor.

Burrell’s appearance also reminded me that he’s not the only Modern Family cast member to make an appearance on SVU. Sarah Hyland, who plays Haley Dunphy on Modern Family, guest starred twice on SVU, in Seasons 3 and 10 as different characters. Julie Bown, who plays Claire Dunphy on Modern Family, guest starred in Season 10 of SVU. And Ariel Winter, who plays Alex Dunphy on Modern Family, guest starred in Season 21 of SVU.

Melissa Benoist

Before making it big on Glee (2009) and then Supergirl (2015), Melissa Benoist played a small role in Season 12, Episode 5, “Wet.” She played Ava, a young woman about to take a dip in Central Park’s Bethesda Fountain with her partner. Their fun and light hearted moment together is interrupted when they find a body.

Benoist did guest star in Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001) the same year in Season 9, Episode 4, “Delicate.” She played Jessalyn Kerr, a dancer accused of killing her dance rival. Her story was one of betrayal, competition, and romance. And both appearances on Law & Order properties showed that like all the actors on this list, she’s got layers.

Ludacris

Grammy winner and The Fast and the Furious (2001) franchise star Ludacris has made two appearances on SVU. In Season 7, Episode 18, “Venom,” and Season 8, Episode 22, “Screwed,” he played Darius Parker, a relative of Odafin “Fin” Tutuola, who was then a detective. And both appearances saw Ludacris transform into someone vengeful and cold.

Ludacris character Darius is the result of an rape. And when he finds out the truth, he spirals. In “Venom,” it’s revealed that he raped and murdered a woman. He also killed her infant son. And the episode “Screwed” is the trial and continuation of the story that sees Darius digging into the past of the detectives as a means of securing his freedom.

Logan Paul

And last on the list of celebrities who guest starred on SVU is the vlogger Logan Paul.

Paul played Ryan in Season 16, Episode 14, “Intimidation Game.” He was the leader of a group of misogynistic cyber terrorists harassing and eventually kidnapping and assaulting a female video game developer. Notably he was shot and killed by then Detective Tutuola, with Paul recounting an embarrassing story of meeting Ice-T and not knowing who he played on SVU.

Since SVU, the vlogger has tried to expand into more traditional acting like in The Space Between Us (2017) and Valley Girl (2020) while continuing his online persona lifestyle. But he’s seemingly abandoned that multiple WWE appearances.
