‘Camp Rock’ Movies In Order
It’s 2026, and yet it feels like we are living in Disney’s Golden Era once again. First, we got the Wizards of Waverly Place reboot, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, with Selena Gomez reprising her role as Alex Russo, then the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special, where Miley Cyrus took us down memory lane. And now, 16 years after the movies were released, we have Camp Rock 3, with the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato making an appearance in the film. All that’s left is for the six of them to get together and re-record Send It On, the song we thought would change the world (it changed my world, at least).
I could write a thesis on the Golden Era and how it impacted my life, but for this particular article, let’s focus on the Camp Rock franchise. The series started in 2008 with the first movie, Camp Rock, and was followed by Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam in 2010. The Jo Bros and Demi Lovato were executive producers on Camp Rock 3, and after months of anticipation, it can be streamed on Disney+. If you’re anything like me, you want to brush up on the Camp Rock lore before diving into the third film, so obviously a movie marathon is in order. But what is the best way to watch the Camp Rock movies? Release order is the clear winner.
The films are not complicated enough that you’ll need a pen and paper or a corkboard and red string to keep things straight, but if you need a refresher, watching them in the order of release gives the franchise room to evolve in the way it was intended. You’ll meet the original characters and then watch as a new group of talented teenagers take the center stage. Technically, all three movies, including the third one, can be watched as standalones because they each have a self-contained plot, but starting from the top will allow you to appreciate the characters, relationships, and the jokes that have now gone viral online, especially as you get to Camp Rock 3, where there are—spoiler!—tons of callbacks! And also, why would you want to rob yourself of nostalgia?

The minute Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato) stepped into the titular camp in Camp Rock, bags and guitar case in hand, was when it all started. She’s in for a summer of music, romance with Shane Gray (Joe Jonas), the arrogant frontman of Connect 3, a three-person band, and, believe it or not, lying through her teeth. Mitchie’s arc starts with being desperate for validation and acceptance from the popular group, but ends with her standing on stage singing her heart out in front of a packed audience (not bad for a one-hour forty-minute film, huh?)
You can practically feel the 2008-ness (if that’s a word) through the clothes and the dialogues (What-Ever-Major-Loser!), but that’s where the charm lies and is frankly, the best part of the whole thing (the songs are an absolute bop as well). The Shane/Mitchie (Smitchie) dynamic is also endearing as you see the two of them connecting. Shane, who thought he was too good to be at Camp Rock (I mean, he’s Shane Gray for crying out loud!) transforms from a bratty popstar to a real person who finally finds inspiration for his music, and watching him douse the attitude is kind of heartwarming, I won’t lie. Anyone who has a soft spot for musicals like Hannah Montana: The Movie will have a blast at Camp Rock. The original movie will always be #1 in my heart, and this is the foundation on which everything else builds.
It’s summer again! Now that you’ve dipped (or re-dipped) your toes into the Camp Rock mythology, you’re ready to take things up a notch as the energy and stakes get bigger in Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam. Everything gets much more dramatic as Mitchie, Shane, and the gang have to step up and save their camp from a rival camp, Camp Star, that might just put our camp out of business. As for the romance, Mitchie and Shane are dating, and we witness their relationship progressing through the ups and (pretty tame) downs.
We’ve got more catchy songs and anyone who has been on the internet in the last few years will have giggled at the iconic Camp Rock march (I swear it didn’t look this cheesy back when I first watched it!) The other two Jo Bros, who play Nate (Nick Jonas) and Jason (Kevin Jonas), have meatier roles, with the former getting his own little Romeo-and-Juliet-esque arc. The movie gives the characters a ‘villain’ to fight against, and though we, as the audience, are supposed to root for Camp Rock (as I diligently did), I now find Camp Star’s flashy performances and eventual win at the showdown well-deserved (they went all out, and I respect the vision). High School Musical 2 is another summer-fueled sequel to check out if you loved the music, sunshine, and competition vibes of Camp Rock 2!
It’s yet another summer over a decade later, and new campers with stars in their eyes are pulling up at Camp Rock in Camp Rock 3! Connect 3 and Mitchie are back at camp (albeit in cameo appearances) with Connect 3 looking for a new opening act for their tour. Apart from the main cast, we see another familiar face return, while some characters like mean girl Tess Tyler live on in the Too Cool shoulder move that she made popular in Camp Rock. Camp Rock 3 is aimed squarely at two camps (that pun was unavoidable, sorry!)
If you’ve been a Rocker since the beginning, then you’re the obvious target audience here, but the movie aims to bring in a whole new generation of viewers, so if you’re a first-time Camp Rock visitor, you’ll find the cast gets its own story rather than a beat-for-beat copy of the first two films. You might not catch every reference if you go into it blind, so it’s always better to watch this title last, in my humble opinion! I won’t give too much away, but the remixed versions of the old songs were a fun touch and the nostalgia hit me hard when Smitchie shared the screen once again. All in all, it’s a lighthearted affair where the metaphorical mic is successfully passed on. What really excited me was that Shane said, “Same time, next summer?” to Mitchie, so is Camp Rock 4 on the horizon? Only time will tell!
