The Substance

2024

One thing that horror has mastered in recent years is telling a chilling story while also sending a strong message about the world and how we view it. The Substance (2024) is about Elizabeth Sparkle, a celebrity with a popular aerobics show, who is fired for her age and has to deal with the ramifications of such a shift. However, upon learning of a product called the Substance, she uses it to split into a younger version of herself, who slowly breaks the rules and tries to take control.

The Substance feels like an extended episode of The Twilight Zone (1959-1964) because it features a problem, a solution that feels too good to be true, and the consequences of breaking those rules. By the end, you're also treated to an amazing body horror spectacle that proves horror can be fun and scary while also telling you something.

Obsession

Obsession

2026

Directed by comedy filmmaker Curry Barker, Obsession (2026) is about a man who, unable to confess his feelings to his crush, makes a wish that she would love him more than anyone in the world. The wish comes true, but the girl he loves becomes scarier and more obsessive than ever.

Obsession is a great film that shows the cost of a morally bankrupt wish and how even the nicest person can be the villain under certain circumstances. But the real tragedy is seeing the victim, Nikki, be the scariest part of the film when she's just a victim trying to fight for control of her body again.

03

Weapons

Weapons

2025

Zach Cregger's second film, Weapons (2025), tracks multiple stories that try to unravel the mystery of an entire classroom of children disappearing at the same time from their neighborhood. It's a film that doesn't let you know what's happening until the very end and, as a result, puts a twist on a popular trope that has existed in horror for decades.

As a supernatural film, Weapons plays things low-key, allowing for some scary moments that feel weird because the setting doesn't leave the window open for a supernatural edge. While it can be confusing at times, there's no denying the scary moments work perfectly, and the overall tension of the movie and not knowing where it's headed make it all worth it.

04

The Ugly Stepsister

A twist on Cinderella, The Ugly Stepsister (2025) explores the classic story from the perspective of one of the 'ugly' stepsisters, Elvira, and what she endures to be deemed beautiful by others' standards. What we get is a twisted body horror that makes you rethink beauty standards and how much value we place on them.

The Ugly Stepsister doesn't seem like a film that should repulse you with its level of gore and body horror, and yet it's one of the best examples of it by how it twists a beloved tale that was made more famous by Disney’s adaptation. This is one movie that's worth seeing to test the limits of what you think is too gross, and the best part is that there's a great story woven into all the horror.

05

Nosferatu

Nosferatu

2024

Robert Eggers loves his period horror pieces, but Nosferatu (2024) felt like a match made in heaven for the director. Retelling the classic silent film, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922), we are treated to a grim and unsettling vampire film that explores themes of darkness, guilt, and accountability.

Count Orlok is an easy standout in the film, as he is both a towering force and incredibly creepy, from the way he looks to how he talks. But it's the horrors that come with him that make the movie so engaging for over two hours, making it a great example of modern gothic horror.

06

Bring Her Back

Bring Her Back

2025

The second film by the Philippou Brothers, Bring Her Back (2025), shows a brother and sister sent to the home of a kind but strange woman who has lost her daughter as well. While the brother has a history of being troublesome, he tries his best but finds himself at odds with his foster mother. But the truth is that she's got a plan that involves dark forces, and her actions get more twisted day by day.

Bring Her Back is easily one of the bleakest horror movies out there, where the ending is a relief but ultimately bittersweet. The gore is enough to make you close your eyes, and the supernatural elements are presented in such a way that you want it all to end before it goes too far. Bring Her Back is one of the best modern demonic horror movies out there and should be watched at least once.

07

Backrooms

Backrooms

2026

Directed by Kane Parsons, Backrooms (2026) explores the viral sensation of liminal spaces and the mysterious world of the Backrooms. Inspired by Parsons' YouTube series, we follow a down-on-his-luck furniture store owner who discovers a portal to the Backrooms in his store basement.

Backrooms is unsettling and strange, and the horror strictly comes from the feeling the movie evokes. That said, the creatures within are creepy, and the overall tone is strange enough that it will stick with you after the credits roll.

08

Evil Dead Rise
Evil Dead Rise

Evil Dead Rise

2023

A revival of the franchise and much less dark than Evil Dead (2013), Evil Dead Rise (2023) brings the franchise to an apartment building after a family accidentally unleashes demonic spirits from the Necronomicon. With violence to spare, the movie stands out as one of the best in this series and a twisted take on the concept of motherhood.

Evil Dead Rise revived the long-dormant franchise in the best way possible, and even now, the signature it left behind can be found in the series, such as the end of Evil Dead Burn (2026). Nevertheless, Evil Dead Rise is a must-watch for fans of the series.

09

In a Violent Nature

In a Violent Nature (2024) feels like a unique take on Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981), where an undead killer stalks people in a forest and has incredible strength. What makes this film special is that it's from the killer's perspective, and we follow him as he moves from location to location.

In a Violent Nature didn't need to be as fun as it was, and yet it pulled out all the stops to give us a fun slasher film that felt different from the others. With a sequel on the way, it'll be fun to see how it'll top its predecessor.

10

28 Years Later
28 Years Later

28 Years Later

2025

28 Days Later (2002) changed zombie films forever, and when Danny Boyle returned to the series with 28 Years Later (2025), he did it all over again. While it's a feat that the entire movie was filmed on iPhones, the really impressive aspect was how it took a horror film and gave us something beautiful.

28 Years Later is a meditation on the idea of death and how we can survive in a world surrounded by it. It allows us to look at such a sad thing and find the beauty behind it, teaching us to live with it in a powerful way. In doing so, it becomes one of the best horror films out there, as it aims to make you feel more than just fear.
