Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) is about to come back in a big way thanks to the live-action introduction of Toph. The live-action adaptation of the modern Nickelodeon classic Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005), follows the adventures of Aang, the titular Airbender. The last of his people, following a massacre a century ago, Aang's status as the Avatar—the only one who can manipulate the elements of water, earth, fire, and air—makes him crucial to the fate of the world.

It's been over two years since the first season debuted in 2024, which tweaked certain elements of the story but maintained much of the spirit of the original. Now, two years later, the show is back to continue Aang's training as he prepares to face Fire Lord Ozai for the fate of the world. Here's everything you need to know about the release date of Avatar: The Last Airbender and what we can expect from Season 2.

When Is Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 Coming Out?

Aang in Avatar the Last Airbender Season 2

Avatar: The Last Airbender returns to Netflix with a new season on June 25, 2026. The season will pick up not too long after the events of the first season, although some time has passed. As the series showrunner Albert Kim told Entertainment Weekly, the realities of live-action over animation meant that the production had to adjust accordingly. While Season 2 of the animated show takes place almost immediately after the events of the first season, Season 2 of the live-action show will jump ahead. This way, the actors will have aged at a realistic rate alongside the characters.

This also provides a handy in-universe explanation for Aang's advancing training as the Avatar. The time unseen on the show could be explained away as extended training with Katara or other Benders, giving Aang a better handle on his water-bending abilities. It also puts more emphasis on the importance of Aang learning Earthbending at a faster rate, complicating his less-than-enthusiastic approach to that discipline in the original show.

What Is the Storyline In Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2?

Zuko and Iroh in Avatar the Last Airbender

The second season of the show is expected to be, like the first season, a fairly faithful recreation of the animated show. Following the battle at the Northern Water Tribe, Aang and his allies have managed to slip away from the Fire Nation. The problem is that even while they remain on the move and try to stay out of the hands of the Fire Lord's daughter, Azula, Aang needs to find the right Earthbending teacher who can help him master the element—which is easier said than done, given Aang's heritage as an Airbender makes it especially tricky for him to adapt to.

The trailer for Season 2 also confirms many of the major locations seen in the original show. This includes the lost library controlled by the mystical owl spirit Wan Shi Tong, the dangerous open water known as the Serpent's Pass, and the Earth Kingdom capital of Ba Sing Se. It is here that the heroes will be journeying to for most of the season, hoping to convince the Earth King to side with them in the conflict against the Fire Nation.

After spending the first season as a somewhat sympathetic antagonist on the hunt for the Avatar, Zuko spends most of Season 2 in the source material adrift. Alongside his Uncle Iroh, Zuko also makes a separate journey to Ba Sing Se, where he is given the chance to start a new life. However, when the opportunity presents itself to potentially earn back his honor, Zuko is faced with a fateful decision that could determine the fate of the world.

Where Have I Seen the Live-Action Toph Before?

Toph in Avatar the Last Airbender

Aang's Earthbending teacher ends up being Toph, a brash young girl whose blindness has only made her more attuned to the world around her. Toph is a fan favorite from the original series, butting heads with the rest of the team while also becoming an invaluable member of their dynamic. The character is being played by Miya Cech, who has gotten plenty of experience on TV and in film before joining the Netflix series.

After making her debut in small roles in shows like Hawaii Five-0 (2010) and American Horror Story (2011), she took on the lead role in several Nickelodeon live-action shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark? (2019), The Astronauts (2020), and Surfside Girls (2022). It's a rare action-heavy role for the actress, but her prior versatility and ability to play in genre fiction make her a solid pick for Toph. With Season 2 boasting some of the show's original, most iconic elements while laying the groundwork for the epic finale, Toph's role in season 2 will be crucial for the fantasy adaptation to bring the show in for a strong ending.

A young boy known as the Avatar must master the four elemental powers to save a world at war — and fight a ruthless enemy bent on stopping him.
