Rick and Morty (2013) is back! Following the "alien of the week" format of other sci-fi favorites like Star Trek (1966), the series lets you jump in and out of Rick and Morty's many misadventures without too much commitment. Still, there is an overarching mythology, one that primarily chronicles the rise of Evil Morty and his entanglement with the Citadel of Ricks.

With Rick and Morty Season 9 kicking off with an Evil Morty episode, you might want to revisit all the mythology episodes to come before. Here is every major Evil Morty and the Citadel of Ricks episode to watch on Hulu, Prime Video, or wherever you choose to stream Rick and Morty

Season 1, Episode 10, "Close Rick-counter of the Rick Kind"

Evil Morty & the Council of Ricks

Rick and Morty C-137 staring down Evil Morty and his Rick

With the sheer amount of Rick and Morty variants introduced throughout Rick and Morty, it's easy to forget that Evil Morty debuted in Season 1, Episode 10, "Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind." The Council of Ricks also makes its grand debut after forcing Rick C-137 (our original Rick) to stand trial for allegedly slaughtering other Ricks and kidnapping Mortys.

The big reveal here, of course, is that Evil Morty is the true criminal mastermind, which kicks off the mythology Rick and Morty still dips into in Season 9. If you're looking to better acquaint yourself with Evil Morty and the Citadel of Ricks, Season 1, Episode 10, "Close Rick-counter of the Rick Kind" is a must-watch. (Honestly, it's worth watching for Doofus Rick alone!)

Season 3, Episode 1 "The Rickshank Rickdemption"

The Citadel of Ricks

The Council of Ricks in Rick and Morty

If you're just looking for Evil Morty episodes, then you can skip "The Rickshank Rickdemption." However, anyone wanting more insight into the Council of Ricks/the Citadel of Ricks will get all that and more. Truthfully, a whole lot is going on here.

The Galactic Federation has imprisoned Rick and taken over his Earth. There's also a fake Rick backstory, a weird brain link device, Jerry revenge, a massive Rick purge, and Szechuan Chicken McNugget Sauce. Ultimately, the episode culminates with Rick teleporting the Citadel of Ricks into the Galactic Federation's prison, resulting in the Citadel's near destruction.

Season 3, Episode 7, "The Ricklantis Mixup"

Evil Morty & the Citadel of Ricks

President Morty looking out the window in Rick and Morty

"The Ricklantis Mixup" picks up after the aforementioned "The Rickshank Rickdemption." Now, Rick and Mortys are trying to rebuild the Citadel—apparently with donations—after Rick C-137 left it in shambles. Of course, things aren't exactly as "perfect" as they seem, with a secret Shadow Council of Ricks pulling the strings behind the scenes.

While "The Ricklantis Mixup" packs in lots of Citadel of Ricks lore, the real draw here is Evil Morty's sneaky return. Capitalizing on the Morty prejudice that's commonplace in the Citadel, Evil Morty seizes power by assuming the identity of "President Morty." Personally, this is one of my favorite Rick and Morty mythology episodes. Don't skip it!

Season 5, Episode 10, "Rickmurai Jack"

Evil Morty and the Citadel of Ricks

Evil Morty shooting a portal gun in Rick and Morty

Ready for a lore dump? Then boot up "Rickmurai Jack." While you can watch most episodes of Rick and Morty without prior knowledge of the series (to a point), that's not the case here. The Season 5 finale gives longtime fans a lot of answers, including a look at Rick's backstory, aka the murder of his wife and Beth.

Evil Morty and the Citadel of Ricks also play major roles in the episode. Not only is the Citadel destroyed, but Evil Morty shatters the Central Finite Curve, which is essentially a multi-dimensional barrier that the Ricks use to ensure Rick remains the most intelligent person in any universe. So, yeah, it's a big problem for Rick and a major win for Evil Morty.

Season 6, Episode 1, "Solaricks"

The Citadel of Ricks… Kind Of

Prime Rick on a computer screen in Rick and Morty

"Solaricks" might not feature the Citadel of Ricks or Evil Morty the way other episodes on this list do, but it's still vital to Rick and Morty's mythology. Picking up directly after Evil Morty sabotaged Rick's portal gun in "Rickmurai Jack," Rick and Morty find themselves stranded among the Citadel ruins.

However, the most important part of this episode involves revelations about Rick Prime, the big bad who killed Rick C-137's Diane and Beth. You'll want to watch the episode for all the details, but the general gist is that our Rick isn't technically Rick C-137. Rick Prime is from the C-137 dimension, and our Rick only found himself there after trying to hunt down Rick Prime, which also means that our Morty is actually Rick Prime's grandson. Expect some emotions here!

If you want even more context for Rick Prime, make sure also to watch Season 6, Episode 10, "Ricktional Mortpoon's Rickmas Mortcation."

Season 7, Episode 5, "Unmortricken"

Evil Morty

"Unmortricken" is another big mythology episode for Rick and Morty. Diane's permanent erasure also makes it an emotional one. The positive is Rick C-137 (which is who he'll always be to us) gets his revenge on Rick Prime, brutally killing him with the help of Evil Morty. However, what seems to be the start of a powerful new alliance comes with a catch.

Evil Morty walks away with Rick Prime's Omega Device, which can permanently erase every variant of a person across every universe. It's a powerful weapon, with its devastating, high-stakes effects already felt with the loss of Diane. Now, in Evil Morty's hands, it becomes something of a bargaining tool. If Rick leaves him alone, Evil Morty promises never to use the Omega Device.

Season 8, Episode 3, "The Rick, The Mort & The Ugly"

The Citadel of Ricks

Homesteader Rick aiming a shotgun in Rick and Morty

"The Rick, The Mort & The Ugly" delivers a bit of a Star Wars story that stems back to the destruction of the Citadel in "Rickmurai Jack." While a good portion of Ricks and Mortys fled to their home universes, Homesteader Rick reveals that the Citadel used Morty-cloning technology to manufacture Mortys in bulk and gave them false memories of a prior life.

Obviously, it's a brutal discovery for C-137 Morty, who once again must grapple with feelings of inadequacy and disposability at the hands of Ricks. The silver lining comes in the form of Homesteader Rick, who sacrifices himself to wipe out the remaining Rick factions trying to rebuild the Citadel. While there's always a chance the Citadel could return, "The Rick, The Mort & The Ugly" makes that possibility pretty unlikely this time around.

Season 9, Episode 1, "There's Something About Morty"

Evil Morty

A whiteboard about Evil Morty in Rick and Morty

Anyone hoping Evil Morty makes a return in Season 9 gets their wish right in the first episode. In a shocking turn of events, Morty C-137 discovers that Rick and Evil Morty keep in contact (they text!) and apparently go on semi-frequent adventures together to save the universe. This ignites a bit of jealousy between the two Mortys, but in true Rick and Morty fashion, things aren't exactly as they seem.

Evil Morty, still equipped with the Omega Device, essentially blackmails Rick into doing his bidding because all it takes is one press of a button to destroy Rick's entire family for good. After an epic fight, Rick manages to get the upper hand, destroying the Omega Device and getting Evil Morty arrested by the Time Cops.

The fractured domestic lives of a nihilistic mad scientist and his anxious grandson are further complicated by their inter-dimensional misadventures.
