The White Lotus S4: Where Have You Seen the Cast Before? (UPDATED)
This article was last updated by Rory O'Connor on 12 May, 2026.
With three celebrated seasons under its belt, the announcement of a new White Lotus cast has become one of the most hotly anticipated events on the cultural calendar. It’s not just a glimpse at who might be nominated at next year’s Emmys; by this stage, it’s basically an introduction to a new class of TV and movie stars.
Written and directed by Mike White, The White Lotus not only singlehandedly re- popularized the rich people acting badly genre, but it has also helped to transform up-and-comers like Leo Woodall, Sydney Sweeney and Aimee Lou Wood into international stars while also reintroducing and recontextualising a hand-picked selection of veteran stars for a new audience.
With that in mind, it’s always worth keeping an eye on anything Mike White is up to, but especially when it comes to how he chooses to cast the most sought-after parts in contemporary television. Read on to discover more about every cast member of The White Lotus Season 4 who’s been announced so far, and use the guide below to find a selection of their previous work on services like Apple TV, Netflix, Prime Video and elsewhere.
Laura Dern
Reporting on the original casting of Helena Bonham Carter in this role a few months back, I wrote: "If there is one thing we can say for certain about Mike White’s taste, it’s that the guy just loves an eccentric lady at the centre of his shows." With Bonham now off the roster (apparently due to creative differences), White has opted to recast the role with perhaps his most beloved collaborator: Laura Dern.
The Jurassic Park and Marriage Story star first collaborated with White on Year of the Dog back in 2007 before starring in his beloved (but sadly cancelled) show Enlightened in 2011 — a series that helped, at least in part, to relaunch the actress's career. Because of all that, long-term White fans have been patiently waiting for him to find a place for Dern in TWL, and now that wait is finally over.
Though little is known about Dern’s character at this point (nor anyone else’s), I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that we will likely see images of her swigging some form of elaborate drink on the French Riviera (the confirmed location of Season 4) before the year is out — and in ways that will likely be as memeable as Parker Posey screaming “Piper nooooo” in Season 3.
Steve Coogan
Similar to Dern’s presumed role, if the first three seasons of White Lotus have taught us anything, it’s that this show only works when a male character in late middle age is forced to confront a crisis of masculinity—to which Steve Coogan says, hold my Coleman’s mustard.
It’s true: after 35 years of playing Alan Partridge across British radio and TV, the comedy legend certainly knows his way around a fragile male ego. Outside of that role, Coogan has been consistently excellent over the years, whether as a version of himself alongside Rob Brydon in The Trip and its sequels or in a variety of other kinds of roles in celebrated movies like Philomena, 24 Hour Party People or the recently released Saipan—in which he does a characteristically good impression of former Ireland manager Mick McCarthy.
Heather Graham
Given that a total of 14 actresses have received Best Supporting nominations for their work in the first three seasons of The White Lotus, I’m probably not going out on a limb to wager that Heather Graham’s name will be that mix in the not-so-distant future.
You might have encountered Graham for the first time in the sacred arthouse texts of Twin Peaks and Drugstore Cowboy, but the actress really entered the collective consciousness with her performance as Rollergirl in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights in 1997. Since then, she’s been a constant presence on both the big and small screens — memorably appearing as Felicity Shagwell in the second Austin Powers, as Jade in The Hangover, and as Dr Molly in Scrubs — but this looks like it might be her ticket back to the big time.
Ben Kingsley
In the same week that the production team and stars of The White Lotus are set to land at the Cannes Film Festival to shoot a few scenes, Ben Kingsley (a genuine Hollywood heavyweight) has been added to the show's already blockbuster cast. This makes Kingsley the second Oscar winner to sign on to the upcoming series after Laura Dern was brought in to replace Helena Bonham Carter earlier this year.
The legendary thespian, of course, won that prize for playing the title role in Richard Attenborough's 1982 epic, Gandhi, but the actor has increasingly avoided pigeonholing when making career choices. He was phenomenal in Sexy Beast, Schindler's List and Shutter Island, but he admirably refuses to phone it in when roles like the one he recently played in Wonder Man (his third appearance as the character in the MCU) come calling.
Rosie Perez
Vying for Graham’s comeback crown will be the bona fide ‘90s star Rosie Perez, an actress who broke out in classics like Do the Right Thing and White Men Can’t Jump before becoming a beloved comedy star in the ‘00s and beyond thanks to performances in movies like Pineapple Express and shows like The Flight Attendant.
Last year, she reunited with Lee thanks to a small role in Highest to Lowest, but her casting in White Lotus feels like another level entirely.
Chris Messina
Outside of those four decorated leads, the next most famous face to be announced for Season 4 is that of Chris Messina, who, again, if I had to guess, will most likely fit into the objectively handsome space left behind by the likes of Theo James (Season 2) and Walton Goggins (Season 3).
Messina is probably best known for playing Danny, the central love interest, over six seasons of The Mindy Project, but the likeable character actor has enjoyed a lively career to date, appearing in everything from Argo to Air to Juror #2. If I had to pick a fave Messina, it would have to be his performance opposite Amy Adams in Sharp Objects—a gritty crime drama from the golden years of HBO.
Max Minghella
Hot off making a lowkey comeback in Industry earlier this year (a show that used the actor's connection to The Social Network in interesting ways), Max Minghella is set to make the jump to another of HBO's hottest having recently come on board for The White Lotus Season 4.
The classically handsome 40-year-old actor is the son of the Oscar-winning filmmaker Anthony Minghella (who directed the rather Lotus-coded The Talented Mr Ripley), but you have to say: as nepo babies go, he's one of the good ones. If you haven't seen him in movies like Syriana, The Ides of March and Babylon, you probably know him for playing Nick Blaine in The Handmaid's Tale.
Ben Schnetzer
Twelve years on from breaking out in Pride, Ben Schnetzer looks like he’s about to make good on all that early promise. In 2014, the actor started picking up award nominations across the board for his lead performance as the queer activist Mark Ashton in that modern queer classic, but despite going on to meaty roles in large-scale Hollywood productions like Warcraft and Snowden, for some reason, those films just failed to land.
As of at least two years ago, however, Schnetzer looks to be back on track: you can currently see him alongside Kurt Russell, Michelle Pfeiffer and Matthew Fox as Sheriff Van Davis in Taylor Sheridan’s latest hit show, The Madison; now it looks like he’s checking in for The White Lotus Season 4, too.
Alexander Ludwig
The fourth big name to grace the White Lotus Season 4 cast list is Alexander Ludwig, the 33-year-old Canadian country singer who broke onto the scene with his commanding portrayal of Björn Ironside over five seasons of Vikings.
Outside of that long-running TV show, the six-foot-two actor has appeared in similarly imposing roles in movies like The Hunger Games (in which he played Cato) and the two most recent instalments of the Bad Boys franchise: For Life and Ride or Die. Don’t be surprised if that physicality is flaunted once more when Season 4 of The White Lotus comes around.
AJ Michalka
For my money, the most interesting addition to the White Lotus season four cast so far is AJ Michalka. The musician and actress has been active in the industry since 2002, appearing in various shows on CBS (The Guardian) and the Disney Channel (Cow Belles) while picking up the occasional part in movie titles like The Lovely Bones and Super 8.
If I had to guess, however, I’d probably say that she caught Mike White’s attention after appearing as herself in The Masked Singer last year. The writer-director is an avowed reality TV fan and has even appeared on celebrity specials of Survivor—so if he has seen something in Michalka that others haven’t picked up on yet, we could be in for a classic White Lotus “discovery” performance.
Marissa Long
The first relative newcomer on the cast sheet is Marissa Long, a model and influencer whose screen career so far consists of only two credits, both of them shorts from unknown directors. If we know anything about White’s writing style, Long will likely slot into the Sydney Sweeney character mould for the upcoming series—i.e., leaving the show’s male characters in various stages of disrepair.
That said, with next to nothing to go on at this stage, all bets are off.
Caleb Jonte Edwards
Caleb Jonte Edwards is, without a doubt, the least known of The White Lotus cast so far. The impressively-jawed Australian has only two small credits to his name so far on IMDb, but as previous unknowns in this show have shown over the years, he will likely have plenty of opportunities to pick from by the time that Season 4 wraps.
Tobias Santelmann
Norwegian actor Tobias Santelmann might be coming into Season 4 of The White Lotus with one of the lowest profiles of any of the cast members, but he’s one of the only ones who can claim to have played the lead in an Oscar-nominated film.
That film was the 2013 Best Foreign Language feature Kon-Tiki, a dramatised version of Thor Heyerdahl’s 1947 attempt to sail the Pacific Ocean on a balsa wood raft. It’s too early to say about his role in Lotus, but something about him is giving villainous Rosie Perez.
Frida Gustavsson
Gustavsson is a Swedish model and actress best known for her role as Freydís Eiríksdóttir in the Netflix series Vikings: Valhalla. If I had to guess, I’d say she’ll be rocking up to the hotel with Santelmann, her fellow Scandinavian, on her arm.
Laura Smet
Lastly, at least for now, we have Laura Smet, a French actress who has had small roles in Mia Hansen Love’s wonderful film Eden as well as the 2014 fashion biopic Yves Saint Laurent — where she appeared alongside Season 3 alum Charlotte Le Bon.
