10 Reboots, Remakes & Revivals to Watch in the Next 2 Years

With Resident Evil lumbering back into cinemas this year like the best-looking reanimated corpse you’ve ever seen, a new age of quality remakes could very well (fingers crossed) be upon us. And, with the slate of beloved movies and TV shows that are set for the reboot treatment in the next two years, the timing could hardly be better.

It’s difficult to know when exactly this changed, but reboots have been on an upward trajectory in recent years, with writers and directors finding ways to tap into the things that made the originals so enjoyable in the first place; rather than burying themselves in too much backstory or lore. This approach has resulted in gangbusters box-office successes like The Super Mario Brothers Movie as well as modestly welcomed efforts like The Naked Gun, Masters of the Universe, and Mortal Kombat 2.

The next two years are typically stacked with reboots, remakes and revivals — some of which nobody asked for and some of which nobody saw coming, but if even half of them end up being even close to the level of Resident Evil, we'll be very pleased.

Kicking things off (ahem) next month is Street Fighter, the first live-action movie based on the legendary beat 'em up arcade game since 2009 and only the third overall. The Jean-Claude Van Damme original, released in 1994, has managed to stick around as a nostalgic gem, which is probably why this latest effort appears to be more influenced by it than by the weirdly slick Legend of Chun Li.

Directed by Kitao Sakurai (a frequent collaborator of the anarchic comedian Eric Andre), Street Fighter looks like it won’t be taking itself too seriously, at least outside of the fight scenes, which is good news for all involved. We are especially looking forward to seeing Jason Momoa as Blanka, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison and, best of all, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson as Balrog.

It says everything you need to know about the original Harry Potter movies that in the time it's taken them to work up the courage to reboot these books, we’ve had four Bruce Waynes (including the Lego version) and basically dozens of Peter Parkers.

Whether the controversy surrounding its author will prove too much for this show’s presumably cozy charms to work will be interesting to see, but the jury is very much still out on this enormous gamble from HBO. All will be revealed when John Lithgow’s Albus Dumbledore appears on our screens for the first time on Boxing Day.

What better way to beat the January blues than a trip to the golden sands of Malibu? That’s right, it’s time to dust off those red speedos once again because a new revival of Baywatch is coming to Amazon Prime in January.

The initial 12-episode run will be the first attempt to relaunch the iconic ‘90s show since the Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson movie from 2017, but unlike that slightly misjudged comedy, this one seems to be playing things relatively straight: beers, muscles, blondes, slow motion running etc. Arrow’s Stephen Amell and Yellowstone’s Hassie Harrison star.

Do you have information that will lead to the exoneration of Lincoln Burrows? Hold onto it, because it might actually still come in handy, as Hulu is about to return to the world of Prison Break for a new spin-off series called Black Creek.

How much this one will be tied to the hugely popular 2000s show is still unclear, but we do know that it takes place in the same universe, so appearances from Burrows (Dominic Purcell) and his brother Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) are not off the table. The reboot follows an ex-soldier (Emily Browning) as she takes on a job in one of America’s deadliest prisons, presumably to help someone she loves break free.

Lukas Gage is also in the cast. There will probably be lots of maps and twists. What’s not to like?

Does it count as a reboot if nobody's ever really done it before? Whatever the case, it would have just been weird to leave The Legend of Zelda out. A co-production from Columbia Pictures and Nintendo, this long-awaited big screen adaptation of the legendary video game is set to take audiences to Hyrule for the first time next summer and fans are tentatively salivating.

Newcomers Bo Bragason and Ben Ainsworth are set to star as Princess Zelda and Link respectively but the movie also boasts what will likely be Sam Neill’s last ever role — it’s yet to be announced, but King of Hyrule feels fitting and likely. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Web Ball is at the helm.

The Brendan Frenaissance that peaked with his Oscar win for The Whale in 2023 will see another full circle moment next year with his tentatively-anticipated return to the bandaged-wrapped franchise with which he made his name.

We are talking, of course, about The Mummy 4: another long dead piece of IP that’s well overdue for a resurrection — and no, we are not counting whatever that Tom Cruise thing was in 2021. Fraser will lead the cast alongside his old pals (played by Rachel Weisz and John Hannah) and his old foes (Oded Fehr and Kevin J. O’Connor). Ready or Not creators Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett direct.

This October, it will be 100 years since Angela Lansbury arrived on this planet — an iconic star of movies and television who continued to entertain us right up until her death in 2022, at 96 years of age. All of which makes the recent news that Jamie Lee Curtis is planning to step into Lansbury’s most iconic role, as Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote, quite a shock to the system.

Set for release at the beginning of 2028, this upcoming movie reboot is being written by the team behind Dumb Money and the director of the Pitch Perfect movies, which presumably means that we can expect a more irreverent and comedic tone — likely somewhere more in the region of Knives Out than Lansbury’s endlessly cozy, 1980s TV show.

Rapunzel

We’re getting to the point where there aren’t a whole lot of Disney classics that haven’t received the live-action treatment. The biggest one remaining in the Mouse House locker is easily Frozen, but one movie that might really benefit from the process is 2010’s Tangled — a revisionist princess musical (with plenty of great tunes) that laid the groundwork for Anna and Elsa, and one that’s still somehow underappreciated.

Lucky for us, this remake is very much on the way, with Teagan Croft from Titans leading the cast alongside Milo Manheim (Disney’s Zombies) as her love interest Flynn, and Katheryn Hahn (Agatha All Along) as the villainous Mother Gothel.

Release date: March 2028

It would be an understatement to say that Marvel has a lot riding on the success of the 2028 X-Men reboot, but we can at least say that the vibes so far — from the on-point casting choices to the introduction of mutations in Brand New Day — have been very good.

We have already met Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey. Don’t be surprised to see a few of the others line up in next year’s Secret Wars after we bid a fond farewell (presumably) to the Stewart and McKellen years this December in Avengers: Doomsday.

Release date: May 2028

A little over a year after heading to a galaxy far, far away in Starfighter, Ryan Gosling will complete his transformation from indie darling to triple-A franchise movie star when he hops on the flaming hellcycle for a new reboot of Ghost Rider — marking the character’s (who was once played by Nic Cage) first appearance in the MCU.

Naturally, there is very little info to go on here, but given the fact that Shawn Levy is directing both Star Wars: Starfighter and this one suggests that he and Gosling immediately found a natural working rhythm.

Release date: July 2028

Ghost Rider is not available for streaming.
