Everything We Know About The Pitt Season 3
Created by R. Scott Gemmill, The Pitt is essentially ER meets 24, with each episode playing out as an hour in a Pittsburgh hospital’s Emergency department.
The first season of The Pitt was a runaway success. It swept the Emmys and several other television awards, and although this year’s nominees are yet to be revealed, it looks set to do the same with its second season.
Fans of the show are desperate for their next fix and thankfully, as of 16th June 2026, the third season is in production. Still, this fact alone isn’t enough to satiate those that have found themselves obsessed with the show. But, fret not, JustWatch has you covered. We’ve scoured the internet for every tiny morsel of information about the forthcoming season. Here’s everything we know so far.
The Pitt Season 3 Cast: Who's Confirmed?
As production began on The Pitt Season 3, the social media team shared a video of a variety of staff IDs with the caption ‘badging in’. The roster included a lot of the team that has been present since the beginning, with Dr. Michael 'Robby' Robinavitch (Noah Wyle), Charge Nurse Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa), Dr. Cassie McKay (Fiona Dourif), Dr. Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball), Dr. Melissa King (Taylor Deardan), Dr. Trinity Santos (Isa Briones), and Dr. Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell) all confirmed to be back on shift.
Also revealed to be returning is Season 2 newcomer Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi), Dr. Parker Ellis (Ayesha Harris), Med Student Victoria Javadi (Shabana Azeez), and fan favourite, Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy).
Not everyone that is back will be in their usual place, though, with The Pitt creator R. Scott Gemmill sharing that Dr. Ellis is making the switch from night shift to day shift, which means a chance to get to know the character a little better.
Actress Shabana Azeez has also revealed that her character, med student Javadi, won’t actually be working in the ER this time around. Instead, having completed her rotation on the department, Javadi has moved onto the psych unit, so expect to see her appearing during psych consultations, of which there’s likely to be a few.
The One Character That Won’t Be Back
Keen eyed The Pitt fans will have realised that most of the nursing staff were absent from the announcement, but I think it’s safe to say that the majority of them will return. The only question mark with the nursing staff is that of Nurse Jesse Van Horn (Ned Brower), who was last seen being carted away by ICE agents midway through the second season. There also remains no word on night shift caffeine addict Dr. John Shen (Ken Kirby), but hopefully he’ll be back with his eccentric sense of humour.
One cast member that we know definitely won’t be back for Season 3 is Supriya Ganesh who has played Dr. Samira Mohan since the first episode. During the second season Dr. Mohan struggled with the fast pace of the ER, combined with personal stress about her mother, leading to a massive panic attack and a chewing out by Robby. Originally set to be moving away to be closer to her mum, Mohan began to have a change of heart and started looking into a variety of Fellowships. Both Robby and Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi recommended geriatrics, and with Dr. Mohan no longer working in the ER, maybe that’s where she has gone.
Fans have been sad to hear of Dr. Mohan’s departure, but it accurately reflects the ever changing nature of being a doctor. Many don’t stay in the same post for long, and with the hospital in The Pitt being a teaching one, the turnover is even greater. Dr. Mohan also isn’t the first medic on the show to move on, as demonstrated in the second season when Dr. Collins was revealed to have moved away.
When Will Season 3 Be Set?
There was a ten-month gap between the first two seasons of The Pitt, and so the obvious question for the third season is when will it be set? Speaking at Warner Bros. Upfronts, star and producer (as well as occasional writer and director) Noah Wyle revealed that it would take place in November. This would be a gap of only four months, which suggests that Robby does make it back from his sabbatical, with the new episodes potentially being set during his first shift back.
Considering the second season unfolds on the 4th of July holiday, one might expect a November date to tie into either Thanksgiving or the shopping carnage of Black Friday, but this is not the case. During the same presentation, Wyle confirmed, “It’s set in early November, just before the holidays, ushering in a whole new set of emergencies and confrontations and complications.”
What Could Happen in Season 3
Season 1 of The Pitt saw the department come under strain after they had to deal with the victims of a mass shooting at a music festival. It was a brutal glimpse into the horror that real-life medics have to endure. Season 2 didn’t have a major catastrophe on that scale, but did find the team under pressure after other hospitals in the area were hit by a cyber attack. So where could the show go next?
Details are extremely light at the moment, but the early November setting could point to something weather related. Pittsburgh temperatures begin to plummet in November and while snow typically appears towards the end of the month, a freak snowstorm would almost certainly push everyone to their limits.
The only cryptic detail that we do know is that there’s something different about the start of the season. Speaking on Jimmy Fallon, Dr. Abbott star Shawn Hatosy teased, “I can say that people will be surprised how we begin.” This could mean that The Pitt starts at Robby’s house rather than the hospital, or that it starts at a different time of day, possibly mid-shift rather than the start, or it could jump straight in with the day team arriving to a massive trauma.
When Will The Pitt Be Back?
An official release date for The Pitt Season 3 is yet to be confirmed, but creator R. Scott Gemmill has gone on record to say it will arrive in January 2027. This is in line with when the second season first aired, and with the show already in production, a mid-January release seems highly likely.
