After the Season 2 finale of the medical drama The Pitt, it’s clear HBO hit another home run. Since its debut, the series has earned both critical and fan acclaim for its gripping, realistic portrayal of medical professionals working a gruelling 15-hour shift in an American A&E.

Season 2 doubled down on that realism and highlighted the mounting challenges facing the US healthcare system. Then, midway through, Variety reported the surprising news that Supriya Ganesh will not return as Dr Samira Mohan in Season 3. While it’s sad to say goodbye to such a compassionate character, showrunner R Scott Gemmill told TV Insider, “the reality of the hospital is that people come and go”.

With Season 2 now complete, Dr Mohan heading down a new path, and Dr Robby’s post-sabbatical fate up in the air, the big questions are: who else might be leaving, who is teetering on the edge, and who is staying on for another shift in The Pitt?

Characters Who Are Likely Returning for The Pitt Season 3

Dr Michael ‘Robby’ Rabinovich (Noah Wyle)

The biggest question mark heading into Season 3 is Robby. Throughout Season 2, it seemed increasingly clear that Robby was heading out on a reckless motorcycle “sabbatical” from which he intended not to return alive.

Up until his talk with Dr Jack Abbot, I had the distinct impression no one had yet succeeded in dissuading him. Still, Jack’s words of advice delivered such a powerful message that I think it actually broke through to Robby.

Whether that message sticks remains to be seen, but we can be pretty certain Robby will return. Speaking to TV Line, series creator R Scott Gemmill revealed that, "one of the things we play in Season 3 is that he comes back, but he doesn't come back to the hospital right away. He will show up [in Episode 1], but he's been away from work longer than three months".

Nurse Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa)

The backbone of the Pittsburgh Trauma Centre, Dana is all but certain to return for Season 3. After surprisingly returning to the station in Season 2, having appeared to quit at the end of Season 1, she seems to have recommitted to her role as the centre’s resident protector. Without Dana, someone else would have to rise to the occasion pretty darn quickly, or the A&E department would be in chaos faster than a firework explodes.

Alongside Dana, the core nursing staff—Princess Dela Cruz (Kristin Villanueva), Perlah Alawi (Kristin Villanueva), and Donnie Donahue (Brandon Mendez Homer)—all are likely to return next season.

Dr Parker Ellis (Ayesha Harris)

In the same Variety article announcing Supriya Ganesh’s exit, it was confirmed that Ayesha Harris’s Dr Parker Ellis will become a series regular in Season 3. In previous seasons, Ellis has worked the night shift, so we only see her briefly when the two teams overlap. Either Season 3 will completely flip the script and focus on the night shift, or we will see Dr Ellis switch over to the day team.

The Core Team

New minted doctors Trinity Santos (Isa Briones), Mel King (Taylor Dearden), and Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell) all seem more than likely to return for Season 3. None of them gave any indication they were thinking of a switch, so I think it’s safe to assume we’ll be treated to more of Santos’s one-sided banter, Mel and Whitaker’s wholesomeness—and, hopefully, more karaoke.

They’ll likely be joined again by resident Dr Cassie McKay (Fiona Dourif), trauma surgeon Dr Yolanda Garcia (Alexandra Metz), psychiatrist Dr Caleb Jefferson (Christopher Thornton), and night shift attendings Dr John Shen (Ken Kirby) and Dr Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy). Ward clerk Lupe Perez (Tracy Vilar) will likely still be manning the patient intake desk, and I would also guess that Joy Kwon (Irene Choi) will return as she completes her third year of med school.

Characters Whose Return is Uncertain in The Pitt Season 3

Dr Baran Al Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi)

One of Season 2’s most compelling additions, Dr Al Hashimi, also faces an uncertain future. After revealing to Robby that she was suffering from seizures due to a childhood illness, he gave her a harsh ultimatum: Inform the administration of her condition (which would likely render her unqualified to run the department), or he would.

We last see her breaking down in her car, caught between protecting the career she’d worked so hard for and upholding her oath to ensure patient safety above all else. The administration’s decision will determine her future—and she could very well remain Chief Attending Physician, perhaps alongside a second Attending, or be forced to step down.

Victoria Javadi (Shabana Azeez)

At the end of Season 2, Javadi begins considering a move to Emergency Psychiatry after Whitaker points out her interest and strength in mental health care. Since she did an extra A&E rotation in her fourth year of medical school, it’s unclear if she will switch departments before the next season, so I’d say there’s a 50-50 chance she will return in Season 3.

Nurse Jesse Van Horn (Ned Brower)

One of the big heroes of Season 2, Nurse Jesse, was detained after defending a patient from ICE agents. Although we didn’t see Jesse for the remainder of the season, the staff continued to track his movements and speculate about what might happen next. It seems likely that Jesse will be released, but might face ongoing legal battles continuing into next season.

James Ogilvie (Lucas Iverson)

Ogilvie started the day as an unlikeable, overconfident med student, but ended it on a very different note. After losing his first patient, Ogilvie breaks down outside the hospital and is left questioning whether emergency care is right for him. While he showed moments of growth during the season, he may ultimately decide he’s not cut out for the intensity of the A&E—or he’ll double down and become a major player.

Dr Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball)

While Dr Langdon had a rough first day back, I think it’s very likely he’ll be back for Season 3. Despite Robby and Santos’ attempts to ice him out, Langdon ultimately showed he had used his time off work for significant personal growth. While he had his moments of self-doubt and insecurity, he has clearly developed enough resilience to take on feedback (like when Whitaker called him out), and pat himself on the back for a job well done (that insane cervical dislocation reduction).

Nurse Emma Nolan (Laëtitia Hollard)

Emma’s first day on the job was also not easy, but I had the impression that she rose to the occasion and was—if anything—more motivated to take on the challenge of the job at the end of her shift. While getting assaulted by a patient on her first day might have its after effects when the adrenaline fades, I think it’s a safe bet that Emma will be back next season.

Characters Who Are Not Returning for The Pitt Season 3

Dr Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh)

A senior resident who appeared in every episode of Seasons 1 and 2, Mohan’s departure from The Pitt comes as a shock. Although the Season 2 finale doesn’t show her decision on screen, she spent much of the season grappling with what to do after her residency—and seemed to be leaning towards Geriatrics.

In an interview with TV Insider, The Pitt showrunner R Scott Gemmill said, “I think Mohan’s just not going to be working this shift”, leaving Mohan’s future pretty open-ended. Like Dr Collins in Season 1, Dr Mohan may return in another season—but for now, we know for sure that she will be absent from Season 3.
