Scary Movie 6’s Box Office May Confirm the Fate of White Chicks 2

Scary Movie 6 is proving that some things never change.

The spoof movie is currently doing what most in the franchise have done in the past by raking it in at the box office despite being what even the most generous among us would call a bit of a disappointment. 

Looking at it from a certain angle, the sixth instalment in the long-running series is actually outperforming its predecessors so far, and even if it fails to keep that pace, it’s certainly confirmed that the Wayans brothers (Marlon, Shawn and Keenen Ivory) are once again a force to be reckoned with. 

All of which is leading movie fans to wonder where the newly reunited siblings will go next. In the piece below, we’ll look into what that success means going forward, especially concerning White Chicks 2, the long-rumoured sequel to their still-provocative 2004 gem. 

Ghostface Can Still Make a Killing at the Box Office

When Scary Movie 6 was pencilled in for an early June release date, nestled between The Mandalorian and Grogu and Spielberg’s Disclosure Day (nobody even knew what Obsession and Backrooms were), even the most optimistic executives at Paramount probably didn’t expect it to do as well as it’s currently doing. Granted, the first week drop-off in earnings has been huge, but after two weeks in theatres, the movie has banked almost $200M globally. 

That downward trend means that it will likely fall short of the original’s overall take, but it could still pip Scary Movie 3 to become the second most successful movie in the series. Whatever the case, it’s an undeniably profitable release and a massive win for reunited Wayans.

What Scary Movie 6's Success Means For the Wayans

Shawn and Marlon Wayans were in their early 20s when they wrote Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood and were still under 30 when Scary Movie 2 was released. The Wayans brothers’ movies don’t get a look in when it comes to festivals and awards season, but from their early years in the industry, they’ve made a habit of turning proudly dumb entertainment into box office gold.

After their run of hits in the early ‘00s, however, and after Harvey Weinstein basically took the Scary Movie franchise from underneath them, the brothers decided to go their separate ways. Scary Movie 6 is the first time that they’ve collaborated since Dance Flick in 2009—a choice that Marlon recently (and quite movingly) admitted was a dying wish from their father. The movie’s success is now leading some fans to believe that more Wayans projects might be on the horizon, and not just another Scary Movie (if horror is thriving, why not?) but also the long-rumoured White Chicks sequel.

Are We Finally Getting White Chicks 2?

In one of the better bits in Scary Movie 6, Gale Hailstorm visits a Botox clinic and ends up in a parody of The Substance. Like Demi Moore in that film, after Ghostface injects her with a green goo called The Stuff, she passes out on the floor and a younger version of her emerges from a slit in her back—only this time it’s Marlon’s Tiffany Wilson, the vapid socialite his FBI agent cosplays as in White Chicks.

For fans of that crossdressing and racially-blurred movie, this seemed to be confirming that a project the Wayans have been trying to get off the ground since at least 2009 is finally going ahead. 

The first White Chicks was a decent hit in 2004 and has gone on to have an interesting life (not exactly a cult classic, but definitely a movie people like to talk about), but it was also criticized on release for what most middlebrow critics believed to be a reckless approach to delicate themes. This all proved too much for a sequel to get greenlit in the 2010s, but more recent audiences have been much kinder to it, with some cinephiles now reclaiming it as a sharp-edged if low-brow satire on racial stereotypes and double standards. 

With Scary Movie 6’s success and the growing sense that audiences are more open to the idea, the stage certainly feels set for a sequel. The question is, what will it look like?

What Can We Expect From a White Chicks 2?

If Benny Zielke’s character in Scary Movie 6 is anything to go by, it’s clear that the brothers have not lost their taste for pushing buttons and courting controversy. This could be a blessing or a curse when it comes to a potential White Chicks 2, not least given that Marlon has already suggested that the film could be set at Mar-a-Lago in Florida—in which case, batten down the hatches.

Even with scenes like the hilarious send-up of Bush’s second tower moment in Scary Movie 4, it would be a stretch to call the Wayans’ movies especially political. With that in mind, it’s probably best not to get our hopes up for a biting satire of the Trump era here. Still, in a time of total absurdity, might they be the best filmmakers for the job?

When White Chicks 2 Will Be Released

With the Wayans once again riding high above their critics and detractors, there’s every chance they’ll feel energised to get to work on this one quickly—and as that Backrooms promo for SM6 showed, they still know how to strike while the iron’s hot and get things done fast. 

Nothing has been confirmed just yet, so let’s say late 2027 as a possibility, with Spring 2028 the more likely bet.
