The 5 Most Savage Horror Movie Scenes In The Past 5 Years That Nobody Saw Coming

Where films such as Saw and Hostel are built on being a rollercoaster of gore, horror movies tend to be more impactful when these elements arrive unexpectedly.

Horror history is full of some great examples of surprise savagery, the type of moments that seem to come out of nowhere and utterly traumatise the audience. Think the chestburster scene in Alien, Hereditary’s lamp post decapitation, the restaurant sequence in The Invisible Man, or Asami's wielding of piano wire in Audition. All of these moments are shocking and difficult to forget, which ensures that everyone is talking about these movies years later. 

With social media such a prevalent tool to market a film, the last five years have seen an upswing in movies featuring that savage moment just waiting to go viral. There is nothing more fun than that jolt of adrenaline that these scenes flood the viewer’s system with. With so many great examples, it was almost too hard to pin down the creme de la creme, but here’s a selection of the pinnacle of surprisingly savage horror scenes from the last five years. Expect spoilers and nightmare fuel throughout!  

1. Talk to Me - Riley’s Possession

The feature debut of brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, Talk to Me brought the teen horror subgenre back with a bang. Gone, though, were the fun self-referential elements of ‘90s movies like Scream, Urban Legend, and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Instead, Talk to Me is a suffocating marination on the grief of losing a parent. Since the death of her mother the year previous, Mia has withdrawn from everyone. Keen to still be perceived as part of the group, she finds herself going to great lengths to prove she is okay and becomes embroiled with an embalmed hand that allows conversations with the dead.

During one of the many parties involving the hand, Riley, the younger brother of Mia’s best friend Jade, takes a turn. The entity that takes over Riley claims to be Mia’s mother. So, Mia pushes Riley past the deemed safe time allocation. The result is horrific as the thing inside Riley begins devastating his body by repeatedly slamming his face into the table, before attempting to gouge its new host’s eyes out. Coming after so much revelry, the audience and the teens on screen instantly sober, and with this scene, Talk to Me announced the Philippou Brothers as new genre voices to pay attention to. 

2. Barbarian - Keith’s Demise

Directed by Weapons' Zach Cregger, Barbarian came out of nowhere and had audiences hooked. In a change to pretty much every other trailer on the market, the one for Barbarian kept the true nature of the movie completely under wraps. It was the correct decision as there is nothing more fun than strapping in for that first whirl with Barbarian. 

Pitched as a story about a woman called Tess who discovers her Airbnb is already occupied and bad things start to happen, Barbarian actually has several interweaving plot strands and lead characters. Straddling the line between nerve-shredding horror and side-splitting comedy, Barbarian is a hit on many levels. Although packed with WTF instances, the most impactful is the demise of poor Keith.

The first act of Barbarian is spent setting up Keith as a potential bad guy - his being played by Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgård only adds to these suspicions. Then, after Tess discovers a sub-basement in the property, Keith goes to explore. Tess follows later in an attempt to find him. The pair crash into each other and Keith begins shouting that they need to leave, right before a hand reaches out and smashes his head against the wall.

3. Obsession - The Car Sequence

The newest filmmaker to create a jaw-droppingly unexpected horror moment is Curry Barker. His movie, Obsession, has everyone literally obsessed, the independent production having taken over $370 million at the worldwide box office to date. One of the contributing factors to its success is its handling of one key savage scene.

After having used a One Wish Willow to make his crush Nikki love him more than anyone in the world, Bear finds the results a little too intense. As the film progresses, Nikki’s behaviour becomes more erratic, possessive, and jealous. This all comes to a head when Bear sneaks out in the middle of the night to meet up with his friend, Sarah. The pair are sharing a tender moment in Sarah’s car when all of a sudden the window next to Sarah bursts open, and Nikki places a brick on the steering wheel before repeatedly smashing Sarah’s face into it, eviscerating her beyond recognition.

Until this moment, Obsession had merely been creepy and uncomfortable; the pivot into more gnarly territory has created one of 2026’s greatest jump scare moments, with even the most hardened genre fan falling for Barker’s trick.  

4. Longlegs - Interrogation Scene

If there is a recurring theme across the last five years in horror cinema, it would be unexpected facial evisceration. Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs is another film to include one, it being the preferred choice of death for titular serial killer Longlegs.

The main story follows the decades-long killing spree of a cryptic serial killer and the team seeking to put an end to the murders once and for all. After being captured by FBI agent Lee Harker, Nicolas Cage’s character spews a monologue of confused consciousness at her until he begins bashing his face against the interrogation room desk. Not only did this moment contain a lot of gore, but it also took the viewer by surprise as Longlegs still had around 20 minutes of run time left.

Longlegs’ suicide might have been unanticipated, but it does marry with the unsettling atmosphere that is prevalent throughout this modern-day answer to The Silence of the Lambs. 

5. Bring Her Back - Oliver’s Eating Habits

Not content to create one viral moment with Talk to Me, the Philippou Brothers went even harder with their next movie, Bring Her Back. Stepping away from the teen movie format, Bring Her Back is a movie drowning in melancholy, dread, and depression. The story sees teenage siblings Andy and Piper taken into the foster care of the eccentric Laura. Andy is immediately at odds with Laura, but the woman is besotted with Piper. It turns out that there is a very nefarious reason for her fascination that involves a horrifying occult ritual, and yet this sequence pales in comparison to earlier events.

Another child living at Laura’s is a mute young boy called Oliver. Right from his introduction, it is clear that something isn’t right with the boy and at not one, but two moments, the Philippous demonstrate how unwell he really is. Even writing about the scene in which Oliver happily starts eating the blade of a knife conjures up the horror of the image. That it is followed shortly afterwards with a prolonged sequence in which Oliver munches on a wooden table becomes almost too much to bear.

And yet, despite these traumatising moments, Bring Her Back is not a torture porn movie, but rather a deeply disturbing psychological horror. With a third film from the brothers on the way, I can’t imagine what nightmares it will bring.
