With a near-unrivalled ability to churn out quality shows and movies one after another, Mike Flanagan has become one of the most consistent creatives in the horror genre. It’s easy to see why he has won over a legion of fans.

Most notably, the director helped bump Netflix’s viewership numbers in 2018 with his fantastic The Haunting of Hill House. He also created The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Midnight Club, The Fall of the House of Usher, and Midnight Mass for the streamer. In 2022, Flanagan and Netflix parted ways, but the filmmaker is still exceptionally busy.

After 2025’s drama- and emotion-driven Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck, Flanagan’s next few projects are all firmly back in horror territory. Here’s what to expect from the creator in 2026 and beyond.

Carrie (7 October)

Now working with Prime Video, Mike Flanagan’s latest television show is a TV adaptation of Carrie. Based on Stephen King’s debut novel, Flanagan’s new series will offer audiences an in-depth look into the life of telekinetic teen Carrie White.

The troubled teen is no stranger to the adaptation process, with several other versions of her story in existence. In order to translate to the big screen, chunks of Carrie’s story had to be streamlined, but with eight episodes to work with, Flanagan has the opportunity to explore these areas at his leisure.

Of those already released, Brian De Palma’s Carrie is viewed as a horror classic, but Flanagan has made a career reworking Stephen King material, so we have every faith that his Carrie is going to be something special.

Clayface (23 October)

Because writing, directing, and producing his own projects isn’t keeping Flanagan busy enough, he also somehow found time to write Clayface. Drawn from Batman’s rogues’ gallery, the film looks set to move the DCU into very dark territory. Directed by James Watkins of Eden Lake and Speak No Evil fame, based on its trailers, Clayface is definitely a horror movie, just one set in the superhero universe.

The story involves rising Hollywood actor Matt Hagen embarking on a horrifying revenge mission after an accident causes his body to take on new clay-like properties. Body horror isn’t something we’ve seen much from Flanagan, but those who recall the aftermath of the rave in The Fall of the House of Usher know that the filmmaker has a jet-black streak of darkness inside of him. Leave that in the hands of Mr Eden Lake, and Clayface could be absolutely sickening.

The Exorcist: Martyrs (12 March, 2027)

Set for release under the newly confirmed title of The Exorcist: Martyrs, Flanagan is once again turning his attention to an iconic IP. Thankfully not a remake of the iconic horror property, Flanagan’s film will tell a new story.

For what will be the seventh film in the franchise, Flanagan has rallied his acting regulars for the cast, adding Scarlett Johansson in the lead role. Firm details about the direction of the new film have been kept under wraps, though early rumours suggest Johansson’s rookie detective will find herself entangled with an unholy demonic force.

The Mist (Release Date Unknown)

In February 2026, news broke that Mike Flanagan was setting his sights on yet another Stephen King work: The Mist.

The announcement divided fans, as although Flanagan is an exemplary filmmaker, Frank Darabont’s adaptation of The Mist is a stone-cold cult classic. Flanagan has been quick to say he would not remake Darabont’s work, but would rather use the source material to venture in a new direction. Hopefully it’ll go better than the ill-fated TV show, yet with so much to explore – particularly the whole Arrowhead Project – Flanagan could cook up a compelling companion piece to the pre-existing movie.

This project is still in very early developmental stages, so it may not come to pass, but if there is one person to trust with The Mist, it is Mike Flanagan.

The Dark Tower (Release Date Unknown)

One Stephen King adaptation that Mike Flanagan has been teasing for years is The Dark Tower.

The books are one of King’s longest-running series, totalling eight novels chronicling the Gunslinger’s epic quest to find a fabled nexus of all universes. Director Nikolaj Arcel already attempted to bring The Dark Tower to life, but the result was a somewhat mangled affair, with even Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey unable to save it. Where Arcel stumbled, we have no doubt that Flanagan can succeed. The only thing preventing him is his own inability to say ‘no’ to every other film and show that takes his fancy…

Hopefully it won’t be too long until Flanagan gets around to what could become his magnum opus.
