Every Villain Revealed (Or Teased) in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer
The MCU’s Peter Parker is finally returning to the big screen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day — but he isn’t alone. While Peter looks set to be alone and friendless in this film, the trailer suggests that he will have to deal with his fair share of foes.
In just a two-minute teaser, Marvel managed to cram a frankly ridiculous amount of classic Spider-Man villains in, making it clear that this film definitely won’t be short on action.
From subtle hints to full-scale fight scenes, there’s plenty to unpack from this trailer, so if you want to learn more about Brand New Day’s villains, keep reading.
1. Scorpion
Technically, this is Scorpion’s second appearance in the MCU. He was initially introduced in Spider-Man: Homecoming, with Michael Mando playing the role. Given he’s all suited up in the trailer, we can expect a pretty epic bout between the pair.
While it’s unclear what he’s actually doing in this trailer, we can assume he’s up to no good, as he tells Peter to stay out of his way.
2. Tarantula
We know that Tarantula is one of the enemies Spider-Man is fighting in the trailer for two reasons. First of all, he can be seen with blades on the bottom of his shoes, which is one of Tarantula’s most iconic features.
And secondly, as pointed out by SlashFilm, the fight between Spider-Man and Tarantula is staged in a way that mirrors the comic book cover that features Tarantula for the first time. Coincidence? I think not. The specific cover is Amazing Spider-Man #134.
3. Boomerang
At one point in the trailer, a suited-up man can be seen chasing Peter and throwing silver boomerangs at him, which confirms that the villain Boomerang is coming to the MCU.
The scene with Spider-Man fighting Boomerang also pays homage to another comic book cover, specifically Amazing Spider-Man #345.
4. Jean Grey (?)
In the trailer, we see somebody taking over the bodies of the guards. We also see a hooded figure who appears to be up to no good and seems to be exhibiting some kind of power as they raise their arms. Could this be Sadie Sink’s character?
It’s heavily rumoured that, with the X-Men coming to the MCU, Sink might be playing Jean Grey. Given her telepathic/telekinetic powers, that lines up with the kind of abilities this character seems to be exhibiting in the trailer.
5. The Punisher
This is a divisive one. In the trailer, at least, Frank Castle/The Punisher seems to be working on the same side as Peter. However, it's clear that the pair don’t really get along, and Peter doesn’t seem to want Frank’s help.
The most likely scenario is that the two put their differences aside to fight a common enemy, and honestly, that’s probably for the best. If the trailer is an example of what they’re like on the same side, I dread to think how they’d fare as adversaries.
6. MJ’s New Boyfriend
The trailer also depicts MJ cosying up to a new man — but could this go deeper than just another love rival? Given Peter is now BFF-less, it is surely only a matter of time before we are introduced to Harry Osborn, who is initially a close friend of Peter’s in the comics and other, non-MCU movies before becoming his adversary.
It’s totally feasible that MCU Peter might try to strike up a friendship with him to get closer to MJ. Arguably, it is also technically possible that he might be another established villain like Eddie Brock. Either way, I don’t think things will end well for this guy.
7. Jackal
In a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, we see a beer keg labelled ‘Green Jackal.’ While the likelihood is that this is just an Easter egg, it can also act as a teaser for another Spider-Man villain: The Jackal.
The Jackal is infamous in the comics for cloning Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy (the latter of whom he had a romantic obsession with). His actions effectively kicked off the comics’ highly controversial Clone Saga. Based on how unpopular this storyline ended up being, it’s probably unlikely that cloning and, in turn, The Jackal, will play a part in this movie. Still, it’s a fun theory.
8. Venom
If you cast your mind back to Spider-Man: No Way Home’s post-credit scene, you’ll remember that Eddie Brock and Venom from the Sony Venom movies appear in Earth-616. While they end up back in their own universe, a blob of symbiote is left behind, meaning that Venom can easily cause havoc in the MCU now.
The trailer also has other subtle hints that Venom might be showing up, like Peter shooting organic webs and his new penchant for black outfits.
9. The Hand
At one point in the trailer, Peter can also be seen fighting a bunch of red ninjas. If you were a fan of the Netflix Daredevil TV show, you’ll know that this group is known as The Hand. In the TV show (and comics), they are a key adversary.
Given that Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is set to have links to this movie, The Hand’s appearance doesn’t come as a surprise. Hopefully, we will find out more as Born Again Season 2 progresses.
