Elle Fanning Loves a Divisive Pixar Movie - And She Refuses to Apologize | Sorry Not Sorry
After wowing audiences with her dual role in Predator: Badlands, and having an award nominated performance in Sentimental Value, Elle Fanning is on a roll.
Just like her sister, Dakota, Elle Fanning has been acting since she was very young, but seems to be going from strength to strength, and is clearly not afraid to mix things up.

She has just starred in hit TV show Margot’s Got Money Problems, and will next be seen in the highly-anticipated prequel movie, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. There, she will play the younger version of Effie Trinket, a role made famous by Elizabeth Banks.
Prequels can be tricky business, but Fanning has a soft spot for them as she revealed during a chat with JustWatch. Speaking with the team about her favourite re-watch guilty pleasure, Fanning shared that her absolute favourite is none other than Monsters University.
‘Monsters University’ Is One Of The Best Animated Movies According To Elle Fanning
A lot of times when faced with such a big decision, people take their time thinking of their answer, but this was no problem for Fanning. When posed the question, she immediately jumped in with “Monsters University” before going on to explain a little more about the film for those unaware of the Pixar movie.
“It was a sequel prequel, I guess because it came out after the fact, but it’s set as a prequel,” she said. The actress nails the explanation as Monsters University is indeed a prequel to the events of mega-hit Monsters, Inc. A lot of fans were hoping for a more traditional sequel, especially given Monsters, Inc’s somewhat cliffhanger ending.
Instead they got a trip back in time to see a young Mike Wazowski and Sully meeting for the first time at university. Initially at odds with one another, the two eventually learn to get along, with Monsters University explaining how they became a ‘scare pair’.
Speaking about Monsters University, Fanning affirmed, “I love it!” before proclaiming it “one of the best animated films”. Those are very strong words, especially given Pixar’s catalogue of films, but as prequel movies go, Monsters University is pretty strong.
It leans nicely into the Mike and Sully odd-couple dynamic seen in Monsters, Inc., and also presents fans of the original with a chance to find far more than just a younger version of Sully and Mike. Eagle-eyed viewers will be able to track down almost all of the Monsters Incorporated staff from the first film at some point or another. Monsters University also introduces a raft of new lovable characters to get attached to, such as the very purple and fluffy Art.
The Underseen TV Series To Watch After ‘Monsters University’
For Elle Fanning though, it is all one character in particular. “I love Mike Wazowski,” she admitted. And her love is far more than merely rewatching the character in Monsters University with her revealing, “I actually have a lot of little toys of Mike Wazowski around”.
For those like Fanning that share an affinity for Mike Wazowski, he can also be seen in Monsters, Inc. spin-off series Monsters at Work. Set after the events of the original film, Mike and Sully now run the company with Mike in charge of training a new generation of workers focused on becoming jokesters rather than scarers.
As with Monsters University, the Disney Plus series features a lot of characters from the original movie, all utilised in different capacities. Importantly, the series also introduces a new clan of characters, placing Mike Wazowski into more of a supporting mentor role.
The story instead follows scare graduate Tyler Tuskmon whose life is turned upside down by the revelation that scaring kids is being replaced by making them laugh. Not a natural comedian, Monsters at Work chronicles Tyler’s attempts to pivot from one discipline to the other. Along the way, he and his team are drawn into a series of shenanigans that present plenty of opportunities for the audience to have a laugh or two.
Monsters at Work is perfect viewing for fans of Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University, and is also a lifesaver for parents whose children are as besotted with Mike Wazowski as Elle Fanning. When children like movies, they will watch them over and over until their parents are even dreaming of the film at night. Having a TV show with 20 episodes available limits the amount of repetition, allowing mum and dad to cling onto their sanity for a little bit longer. Monsters at Work also acts as a fun placeholder until, fingers crossed, that sequel gets made.
