While Din Djarin and Baby Yoda enjoy their time in the spotlight with the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu, it’s worth taking a moment to remember those who could not be in the film.

We were all pretty happy to see the back of the nefarious Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian – laying a finger on poor little Grogu is a crime worthy of death, let’s be honest. Still, he was a pretty epic Star Wars villain, with the potential to be one of the very best.

If we’ve learned anything from being fans of Star Wars over the years, though, it’s that somehow… anyone can return. And it sounds like Giancarlo Esposito, the man who played the character, firmly believes that his time in the franchise might not be over just yet.

What Happened to Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian?

Moff Gideon

It’s safe to say that Moff Gideon made life hell for the inhabitants of Mandalore. Having made his base on Mandalore in the wake of the Galactic Civil War, the warlord played a pivotal role in the Empire’s Mandalorian purge.

He killed millions of innocent people, tricked Bo-Katan Kryze into handing over the Darksaber, and set up a cloning project on Mandalore to strengthen his iron grip on the planet and give him a better chance of seizing power throughout the galaxy.

In The Mandalorian Season 3, however, it all unravelled for Gideon. See, when you oppress a people as much as he did, you’re bound to suffer some repercussions down the line. So, when the Mandalorian Resistance fighters rose to reclaim their colony, Gideon was seemingly killed after his cruiser blew up and he was incinerated along with it. Or was he…?

Giancarlo Esposito Teases His Return

Speaking to JustWatch about his time in a galaxy far, far away, Esposito was asked if Gideon is really dead or not.

He replied, “You’ve seen me go out in many different ways in my career. But you didn’t actually see Moff Gideon go. You see him go over a cliff, but you don’t see a definitive death. So, you know, it’s open.

“Dave Filoni is in his new position at Star Wars, and with his brilliant imagination, you just never know what [or who] will come back.”

Indeed, fans on Reddit simply aren’t buying the fact that the bad guy is truly gone. One thread outlined the fact that Gideon was wearing Beskar armour, the traditional metal worn by Mandalore soldiers.

Not only is this an incredibly strong material, but the main clue as to Gideon’s potential survival lies in the colour of the flames which burned him. When The Armourer melts and sculpts her Beskar creations, she uses blue flames, which are seemingly the only way the metal can become malleable. When Moff Gideon is burned, the flames are orange, which at the very least means his armour would have resisted the fire.

Let’s not forget that we’ve seen other Star Wars villains rise from the ashes. Anakin Skywalker is quite literally burnt to a crisp by the lava of Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith, only to be given a new lease of life thanks to the Empire’s technology.

If Gideon has been raising an army of clones and creating Dark Troopers, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that even the most heavily burned and scarred remains of the evil dictator could be revived and allowed to live on in some kind of mecha-human form.

How and Where Moff Gideon Could Come Back

It’s also worth noting that Emperor Palpatine himself returned in The Rise of Skywalker, albeit as a consciousness inhabiting the body of a clone. As exasperating as that plot twist was for some viewers, it does mean there’s precedent for Gideon to do the same.

So, if he were to return, where and when could we see him again? He’s not in The Mandalorian and Grogu, but as Esposito says, Filoni is in charge now, and that opens up a world of possibilities for him.

The logical throughline for Moff Gideon would be for him to cross paths with, and potentially even be brought down by Grand Admiral Thrawn. They’re both wildly ambitious, malevolent men who want the same thing: to rule the galaxy. That clash of interests would surely lead to one of them being killed.

With Ashoka Season 2 on the way and Filoni’s penchant for throwing in cameos and linking various characters and timelines, it would not be surprising at all to see Gideon appear again there.

If he does, that tantalising conflict between him and Thrawn might just make the whole contrivance of cloning and resurrection in Star Wars worth it after all.

After the fall of the Galactic Empire, lawlessness has spread throughout the galaxy. A lone gunfighter makes his way through the outer reaches, earning his keep as a bounty hunter.
