With 21 published novels and a spattering of short stories to her name since the release of Slammed in 2012, Colleen Hoover is without question one of the most prolific and successful writers of her generation.

Working in the realms of hightened romantic dramas, suspense and YA fiction, the Texas native has reportedly sold somewhere in the region of 20 million books so far and was named one of Time magazine’s most influential people as recently as 2023. Naturally, all of this has innevitibly led to Hollywood, with a total of four adaptations so far since 2024’s It Ends With Us, the most recent being the 2026 Anne Hathaway movie Verity, a campy, old school thriller based on Hoover’s 2018 best seller of the same name.

So whether you’re Hoover-curious, a CoHo fanatic, or simply enjoy a good page-turning yarn, dive into the Colleen Hoover cinematic universe with the four screen adaptations listed below — which, to keep things simple, are arranged in chronological order.

It Ends with Us

2024

If Colleen Hoover arrived in Hollywood unconvinced that art imitated life, the swirl of allegations that surrounded her first ever movie adaptation, It Ends With Us, probably changed her mind. This is a production that became so embroiled in controversy (firstly with an ugly argument over the movie's authorship, then even more controversially following claims of sexual misconduct from star Blake Lively against the movie’s director and her co-star Justin Baldoni) that the story around the It Ends With Us production threatened to outshine the movie itself.

That the controversy in some ways mirrored the movie’s plot — a deeply personal story about a woman who opens a flower shop in Boston only to fall in love with an abusive man — probably gave the movie a sharp meta-textual edge for some viewers, but even with all that stuff left out, this is a romantic drama that fans of movies like Where the Crawdads Sing or Safe Haven will find instantly compelling.

Whether it would have still banked $350m at the box-office without all that background noise is hard to say, but there’s no doubt in my mind that the movie — which was based on Hoover’s most famous novel — would have been a hit regardless.

Regretting You

2025

For more better than worse, there’s a lot less to say about Hoover's second adaptation, Regretting You — another romantic movie (it's helmed by The Fault in Our Stars’ director, Josh Boone) with trauma at its core and no controversy surrounding it. If anything, the most alarming thing about this movie is seeing the forever baby-faced Dave Franco play a father figure — well, that and the tragic accident at the centre of Hoover's narrative.

Regretting You’s plot is pure, undiluted Hoover-core: a love quadrangle where two members are taken out of the equation following a tragedy, allowing a pair who probably should have been together all along the chance to give it a go. If only all that pesky guilt and soul searching would leave them to it.

Compared to It Ends With Us, the second movie in the CoHoCU (Colleen Hoover Cinematic Universe, obviously) was less of a success with audiences. Indeed, despite turning a healthy profit at the box-office, the movie's 29% Rotten Tomatoes score probably says all you need to know.

Reminders of Him is unique in the CoHo Cinematic Universe thus far, as it’s the first and so far only time that Hoover has been directly involved in the screenwriting/adaptation process. How much that contributed to this movie being the most well-contained Hoover adaptation we've seen yet is hard to say, but you have to think it played a significant role.

Reminders of Him, like both Hoover movies that came before it, is a story about romance and trauma. Maika Monroe (Longlegs) plays a young mother returning home after serving a five year sentence for vehicular manslaughter — the victim of which, as you may have guessed, was her husband and the father of her child. While trying to rebuild her life, she of course forms a bond with her late husband’s best friend.

Of the four books that have been adapted so far, Reminders of Him is the least sensational. As a movie, it's also the most satisfying watch.

Verity

Verity

2026

With Verity, we move from the most modest Hoover adaptation yet to the most outrageous.

This is a movie about an up-and-coming writer named Lowen Ashleigh (played by Dakota Johnson) who is hired to finish the final books in a best-selling romantasy series after their creator, Verity Crawford (a brilliant Anne Hathaway), is left comatose following a car crash. As part of the gig, Ashleigh moves into Crawford's secluded, modernist, rural home, where she discovers a revealing memoir and starts to fall for her brooding husband (Josh Hartnett), even though Crawford and her son still live there.

If that synopsis sounds roughly familiar to other Hoover stories (love, death, guilt etc.), trust us, it's anything but. This is a movie with more in common with thrillers like Gone Girl and The Housemaid than with any of the movies we’ve mentioned above, and while it might not be anywhere near the Fincher level in terms of filmmaking or suspense, the performance of Anne Hathaway (her fifth movie of 2026) is well worth the entry alone.
