Adam Scott starred in one of 2026’s most talked-about horror movies, Hokum, but he has a very different choice of underrated film.

Directed by Damian McCarthy, Hokum’s trailer alone was enough to give people sleepless nights thanks to the inclusion of a rather sinister-looking bunny rabbit. It is an image that has proven hard to shake, but Adam Scott might have just the tonic.

Speaking with JustWatch during one of Hokum’s many advance screenings, Adam Scott took the opportunity to valiantly defend an underseen Cameron Diaz movie, In Her Shoes. The film could not be further from Hokum’s suffocating sense of dread and should help shake loose any bunny-related trauma.

Why Adam Scott Loves In Her Shoes

When asked what film he is unashamed to be a cheerleader for, Adam Scott was quick to sing In Her Shoes’ praises.

“I don’t think people think it’s bad, but a lot of people don’t know it, called In Her Shoes. The Curtis Hanson movie from like 2005.”

He went on to explain his reasons for his eagerness to champion the film: “It’s Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette, and Mark Feuerstein; there’s a bunch of great people in it. It’s a terrific movie. Curtis Hanson was one of our great filmmakers, and it kind of slipped under the radar at the time. I remember thinking that it was the best movie of that year.”

What Is In Her Shoes About?

in her shoes

In Her Shoes is an adaptation of the book of the same name by author Jennifer Weiner. The plot follows two sisters, Rose and Maggie, who couldn’t be more different from one another. Rose (Toni Collette) is the elder, more serious sister. A lawyer by trade, she has always assumed responsibility for her more carefree younger sister, Maggie (Cameron Diaz). However, after Rose finds Maggie in bed with her boyfriend, the sisters separate from one another. While Rose throws herself into a new line of work, Maggie seeks out their estranged grandmother Ella (Shirley McLaine), which leads to some startling revelations about their deceased mother.

A romantic dramedy, In Her Shoes follows many of the expected story beats, but thanks to some stellar performances and astute directing, Adam Scott is right to recommend it. Far from overly saccharine, In Her Shoes has some bite to it, making it more palatable to those who find the traditional rom-com a tad too twee.

More Movies From Curtis Hanson

Sadly, In Her Shoes’ director, Curtis Hanson, died in 2016. He did, however, leave behind a vast legacy of movies, with a filmography that spans a range of genres and tones. In addition to In Her Shoes, Hanson directed the '90s thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Eminem vehicle 8 Mile, awards darling L.A. Confidential, and outdoors action drama The River Wild.

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle helped make Rebecca De Mornay a star and tells a wonderfully soapy and over-the-top story. After she is left penniless and childless by her husband, widow Mrs Mott goes to extreme lengths to get revenge on those she believes triggered her husband’s suicide. She targets a young family, inserting herself into their lives as a nanny for their newborn child, before systematically destroying everything they hold dear. The film recently got the remake treatment starring Maika Monroe, but sadly it can’t hold a candle to the original.

8 Mile is a semi-autobiographical account of Eminem’s early journey from trailer park joke to respected rapper. It’s a must-watch for anyone curious about Eminem’s origins, though it is the supporting performance from the late Brittany Murphy that steals the show.

Neo-noir thriller L.A. Confidential was nominated for nine Academy Awards; it won two of them - Kim Basinger for Supporting Actress alongside the award for Art Direction. It has since gone on to be viewed as a modern classic and is a regular feature on the ‘Top Films Ever Made’ lists.

Finally, if you want to get the fully rounded viewing experience of all the different stories that Curtis Hanson brought to the screen, The River Wild is another unapologetically ‘90s thriller. This time, the onus is on action as Meryl Streep’s family holiday is taken over by a pair of armed fugitives played by Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly.
