A trendsetting action franchise in 2000s and 2010s-era Bollywood, the Race trilogy has spawned a few blockbusters. The first installment was directed by the twin brother duo Abbas-Mustan, who had previously helmed many other action genre mass-entertainers. Venturing in a somewhat neo-noir territory, Race featured an all-star cast including the likes of Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna as a pair of businessmen brothers at odds with each other. As their personal conflict turns into a whirlwind of assassination plots and car chases, Anil Kapoor plays an unorthodox policeman on their trail.
Race 2 continued the story further with Khan and Kapoor’s characters crossing paths with the leader of the Indian mafia in Turkey. Saif Ali Khan was replaced by Salman Khan with Anil Kapoor playing a brand-new character. Despite the involvement of a Bollywood megastar like Salman Khan, the movie underperformed commercially leaving the fate of the Race franchise uncertain.
